Subject: DETERMINATION OF % MOISTURE CONTENT IN GREEN SAND
DETERMUNATION OF % MOISTURE CONTENT IN GREEN SAND.

(Reference taken from manufacturer manual)

1.0 SCOPE :
1.1 This instruction covers the determination of Moisture content in Green sand.

2.0 SAMPLING METHOD :

2.1 Collect about 1 kg of prepared sand either from belt or from machine hopper
in a plastic container.

3.0 SPECIFICATION / FREQUENCY OF CHECKING : 4 times/ shift

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY : Lab Operator.

5.0 EQUIPMENT AND REAGENTS REQUIRED :

5.1 Weighing balance.
5.2 Rapid moisture tester
5.3 Calcium Carbide.

6.0 OUTLINE OF THE METHOD :

6.1 The instrument operates on the principle of gas generated between the moisture
in the sample and the absorbent compound.
6.2 The instrument is portable and needs no power supply. It is accommodated in a
handy wooden case calibrated balance ready to use. Absorbent compound is
provided with the instrument in a airtight bottle.

7.0 PRE-SETTING :
7.1 Keep the case on the platform. Open the case. Set the balance bracket to its seat
providing at left side. While tightening the wing nuts see the level. Place the
balance lever, pan seat and pan in their proper position.

8.0 PROCEDURE :
8.1 Weigh the sample accurately by matching the red lines marked on bracket and
lever. Transfer the sample in the cap. Take two spoonful of absorbent compound
and transfer into the body testier.
8.2 Hold the body horizontally and place the cap in position. Bring the clamp in
position and tighten the cap with screw. Shake the instrument vigorously. This
ensures immediate mixing of sand sample and the absorbent compound.
8.3 Immediately the pointer of the gauge moves. Keep the instrument in vertical
position.

8.4 Observe the reading when pointer stops further movements. This will give the %
of moisture in the sample directly. And the results are recorded in
L1.FM.LAB.05/L2.FM.LAB.05.
8.5 Unscrew the handle and take out the cap. Throw away the used material. Clean
the instrument for subsequent test.

9.0 PRECAUTION :
9.1 Clean the instrument after use.
9.2 Do not expose sand sample.
9.3 Do not keep the absorbent compound exposed to atmosphere.
9.4 Keep the entire instrument in the box and close the box after required tests.

10.0 REPRODUCABILITY : +/- 0.1 %

11.0 REACTION PLAN FOR LAB OPERATOR :

11.1 If not ok inform to Moulding Engg./ Process Engg.

12.0 REACTION PLAN FOR MOULDING/ PROCESS ENGG :

a)If the value is high then decrease the moisture, until the compactibility
is within the specification.
b)If the value is low, then increase the moisture, until the compactibility
is within the specification.
