‘The increasing number of refugees today tell us more than just the plight of
homeless people’. Elaborate
The refugee crisis is a human crisis. There are mothers longing to return home, fathers yearning to work
again and children searching for a childhood. We are witnessing a massive shift of people unlike
anything before. More than 65 millions of people around the world (Equivalent to the entire population
of UK), are displaced from their home. It has been noted that 23 million are from five places; Syria,
Afghanistan, South Suede, The late Chad, Somalia.

A refugee is a person who flees his home because a well-founded fear of being persecuted for various
reasons like race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or politician opinions.
Tackling this issue has become a worldwide issue. There are various causes for such crisis; Poverty is the
first one. The phenomenon is most serious in African continent. Somalia for example is facing one of the
world’s most emergencies and is at risk of slipping into famine. Almost half of the country is in need of
assistance and 3.1 million of people cannot meet their daily food need. Drought and the ongoing conflict
have force the people to flee their villages. Natural calamities force people to leave in large numbers.
Drought, deforestation, tsunamis, earthquakes etc… Climate change makes many places no longer
suitable for human survival (usually agriculture does not thrives because a lack of water, farming isn’t
possible). These people have no alternative than to see refuge elsewhere. However dangerous the
attempt might be.

The deterioration of economic situation, years of unemployment, insecurity, and political instability
have caused many people to leave country like Afghanistan, South Africa and many alike countries.
Another factor is war, religious conflicts, ethnics clinging, territorial disputes, and civil war, all these
contribute to exacerbate this problem. An example is that the Syrian crisis has accelerated the refugee
crisis dramatically. After the war in 2011 it took 2 years for 1 million people to be displaced internally or
forced to leave the country. We have to highlight at these points that people need food, blankets or
other essential supplies for their daily living. There is the threat of increased racism and xenophobia
(fear of strangers) against uprooted people because of their religion, ethnicity, national origin and
political views.

The world community will have to address this issue now. The United Nations should ensure that the
right of the uprooted people are respected. As far as host countries are concerned they should provider
at least a minimum of shelter, food, water and medical care; while taking into account the specific needs
of woman, children, the elderly and the disable

A number of charities and non-governmental organization have opened appeals aiming at helping the
plight if the refugees, it is very important for us to contribute generously to these organization that
engaged in that laudable task of those innocent people. These people or refugees (irrespective of who
they are) need to have access to education, justice, employment and other fundamental rights and
privileges

The asylum seekers form North America, Afghanistan and other countries are rising rapidly as a result
the European Union has to do more than what has been done to save those displaced and distress
people.
