TEST RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS

, — and  represent positive, negative and neutral attributes, respectively.

 RELIABILITY EXCELLENT

 The MultiXpress X4300LX did not require any service over the course of its 120,000-impres-
sion durability test and it experienced only five misfeeds, for a misfeed rate of 24,000
impressions.

 Because the drums are designed so that they can be replaced by users, technicians
don’t have to be called to service the unit, decreasing downtime.

— While the drums are user-replaceable items, there is no guidance or instructions pro-
vided on how to replace them.

The fuser and feed rollers are service-replaceable items.

 MULTITASKING VERY GOOD

 The Samsung MultiXpress X4300 enables users to program an unlimited number of

copy jobs while another copy job or a print job is in progress.

 BLI technicians observed no slowdowns between copy jobs and print jobs or during
concurrent operations such as printing while scanning.

 Unlike with most other devices, users can program an additional copy or scan job even
while pages of the current job are still being scanned, enhancing productivity. In addi-
tion, users can scan even when a misfeed has occurred.

— While settings from the previous copy job can be retained or cleared, the process for
doing either or is unclear. After a copy job is completed, a Home button tap will retain
the settings of the previous copy job, while a Back button tap will remove the settings of
the previous copy job.

By default, jobs are processed on a first-in, first-out basis. Administrators can change

the priority level of different device functions over a 16-level range. BLI recommends
simplifying the process by offering a narrower range of selections—set print as priority,
set copy as priority, or first in, first out, for example.

The Interrupt hard key can be used to interrupt either copy or print jobs to perform an

immediate copy job. During testing, the unit stopped the current job in the middle of
a set. It would be preferable to enable the current job to continue running while the
user programs the interrupt job. All of the features required for a typical copy job are
accessible (such as document feeder, duplex and staple). The device returned to non-
interrupted mode immediately.

 ADMINISTRATIVE UTILITIES EXCELLENT

 Administrative utilities for the device include its embedded Web utility and Sync-Thru
Admin 5 for management of all output devices—Samsung, as well as non-Samsung
models—on the network.

 Available as a free download, Samsung SyncThru Admin 5 is on par with the best net-
work device management utilities. In addition to offering a more user-friendly interface
than most competitors, it delivers more complete functionality, including built-in graphi-
cal reports and the ability to discover and monitor not just network-connected output
devices but local devices connected to network PCs.

 Free plug-ins for SyncThru Admin enable administrators to control access to device
features (such as color printing), track usage by user or group and provide a map view
of devices, capabilities not provided by some other competing utilities.

The web utility offers a wealth of information on supplies and paper status, as well as usage counters and current machine
settings.

BUYERS LAB
Samsung MultiXpress X4300LX Lab Test Report

 The unit’s Web utility offers a very straightforward, graphical design that’s easy to navi-
gate. It offers a wealth of information that’s more precise and robust than that offered
by other devices, including detailed information on supplies and paper status from
the main screen, and even more detailed information on the Information tab, including
usage counters and current machine settings. Administrators can also quickly and easily
update machine and network settings via the Settings menu.

 Only administrators can program destinations via the address book. Favorites can be
stored and are clearly indicated in the address book. In addition, users can send to mul-
tiple destination types in a single scan session including email, fax, SMB and FTP.

 LDAP search is supported from the web utility, so administrators can remotely add and
edit destinations from the LDAP servers.

— All of the functions utilized for scanning setup, including LDAP, SMTP, FTP and SMB,
are in multiple separate locations, whereas they should all be accessible from the same
location.

The web utility’s job queue offers status information on currently running and pending

print, scan and copy jobs. A job history is available, but it cannot be exported. Jobs
cannot be moved via the web utility, but can be moved at the device’s control panel.
Details provided on jobs include file name, user name, and date and time submitted and
completed.

The Web utility enables direct printing of a single PDF, PRN or XPS files at a time; it

does not support printing of other file types, including JPEG or TIFF. Unlike with some
competing machines, Samsung’s web utility does not allow for selecting multiple jobs
to print at once, nor does it allow for the selection of color or black mode, paper size or
source. Moreover, blank page removal is not supported, and corner stapling cannot be
applied. Quantity can be changed, as can simplex/duplex.

Although the web utility does not have a cloning capability to copy the settings or

address book from one unit to many others all at once, this capability is available with
SyncThru Admin. Administrators can back up machine, network and security settings,
as well as user access control, via the web utility.

 FEEDBACK TO WORKSTATIONS VERY GOOD

 The Easy Printer Manager utility bundled with the unit provides pop-up messages noti-
fying users of errors or warning conditions such as toner low and paper jam. This util-
ity is also accessible via the drivers when the Printer Status button is selected. When
selected in the driver, the utility provides details on the amount of toner remaining, with
the option to order more supplies, as well as real-time device status on the amount of
paper remaining in each drawer. The utility also provides a troubleshooting guide which
includes instructions and animations on how to replace toner, for example.

The Easy Printer Manager provides highly detailed status on supplies, and several alerts can be turned on and off.

— The utility’s icon on the taskbar, which is also displayed at the control panel, changes
to an orange X to indicate error conditions regarding device status, such as if there is a
paper jam or the unit is out of paper or out of toner; a yellow x indicates warning condi-
tions. However, the small icon can be easily overlooked and indicates only that there is
a problem, not precise details.

When selected in the driver, the feedback utility

provides details on the amount of toner remaining,
with the option to order more supplies, as well as
real-time device status on the amount of paper
remaining in each drawer.

 Email alerts to an unlimited number of email addresses can be set up via the web utility.
Alerts available include consumables shortage warnings, as well as system errors such
as paper low, paper empty, paper jam and cover open. Email alerts can also be sched-
uled for every day, every week or every month, or for every certain amount of pages.
Reports on meter counts, device configuration, and emails and faxes sent can also be
scheduled for emails.

The web utility does not appear to support the selection of email alerts for when print

jobs are completed.

 Information on supplies at the web utility is highly detailed, and includes the amount of
toner and drum remaining in 1-percent increments, as well as the approximate number
of impressions left until replacement for the transfer belt, ITB cleaner, fuser and rollers.
Active alerts are also provided at the web utility, for when trays are empty and need to
be refilled, for example.

 The feedback utility provides a link to the Web utility (eliminating the need for users to
enter an IP address to access the utility

 EASE OF NETWORK SETUP VERY GOOD

 The PCL driver, Users Guide and feedback utility are all contained on one CD, which
auto-runs upon insertion in the drive. The drivers and feedback utility can be installed in
the same session in 10 clicks. The procedure is simple, and the port is automatically cre-
ated following the installation of the driver. The drivers automatically detect configured
accessories without requiring additional clicks.

— A PostScript driver is not included on the CD for installation. Rather a universal Post-
Script driver is available from Samsung’s web site, and must be installed separately.

 A function enabling an administrator to confirm that LDAP, SMTP and SMB settings have
been configured correctly is available via the web utility, saving users from having to go
to the device and physically send a scan to make sure the communication between the
device and the servers are OK.

 Enhancing ease of setup is that print driver distribution to end users can be automated
via SyncThru Admin, eliminating the need for an administrator to manually install drivers
on each workstation.

 PRINT DRIVERS VERY GOOD

 The easy to use driver features a graphical interface, and allows for point-and-click
selection of both the paper source and output tray. A job review window to the right of
every tab provides a detailed list of all currently selected functions.

The driver includes 8 tabs—Favorites; Basic; Paper; Graphics; Finishing; Advanced;

Eco; and Samsung. Some of the most commonly used print job features are selectable
from the Basic tab, including orientation, duplex and finishing options such as staple
and hole punch. But users must navigate to the Paper tab to change quantity and select
collate, and must go the Graphics tab in order to switch between black and color mode.

Some of the most commonly used print job features are

selectable from the Basic tab, including orientation, duplex and
finishing options such as staple and hole punch.

Color modes offered include full color and grayscale; although there is no selection for

auto-color, the system automatically detects which pages are black only and which
contain color and prints them accordingly.

 The print drivers offer a good feature set overall, including the abilities to print from up to
five paper sources for a single job, and specify different features (simplex, duplex, paper
sources, but not for image quality settings or subset finishing) for different page ranges
in a document. Users can also add front covers, back covers or both front and back
covers, which can be blank or pre-printed, and single- or double-sided. Additional fea-
tures include proof print, store, store and print, and secure print. The driver also includes
a button to open the feedback utility, which when selected, displays toner status, with

the option to order more supplies, as well as status on the amount of paper remaining in
each drawer.

— Scheduled print is not supported.

 Other useful features include the Eco tab; when users prepare to print a job, this tab
allows users to see the paper and energy savings they can achieve by selecting more
environmentally responsible settings for their jobs. The driver depicts the percentage
of savings in energy consumption, CO2 and paper. To enforce/encourage more envi-
ronmentally responsible printing thoughout the organization, duplex printing, skip blank
pages and toner-save mode can be set as default settings in the driver. Selections for
envelope printing and poster mode are also available.

The Eco tab allows users to see the paper and energy savings
they can achieve by selecting more environmentally responsible
settings for their jobs.

 While the driver is not customizable, the Favorites tab includes seven preprogrammed
one-touch selections for commonly used combinations of features. They include last
used setting, to allow for the setting of the last job programmed to run again; normal;
eco preview; double sided; 2-1 printing; booklet; and secure print. At any time, from any
of the tabs in the driver, users can add a favorite based on currently selected functions.
Each favorite added can be named, a description can be added, and an icon can be
created to represent it. Each user can have his or her own favorites.

 Enhancing ease of use is that features not available for selection based on currently
programmed settings are ghosted out and cannot be selected. In addition, when users

hover the mouse over each of these ghosted out selections, a message details what
exactly needs to be done in order to allow these functions to be selectable.

It takes seven clicks to program a typical print job.

Network printing is standard. The Samsung MultiXpress K4350LX comes bundled with

a PCL 6 driver. A universal PostScript driver is downloadable from Samsung’s web site,
as is an XPS driver. The drivers support Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems.

— Banner pages and carbon copy mode are not supported. In addition, users cannot print
onto tabs or tab extensions. According to Samsung, banner pages will be available for
the device by March 2015.

 Secure print jobs can be accessed at the device via the Job Status key. Multiple secure
print jobs with the same PIN can be released simultaneously, and even after releasing a
secure print job, a walk-up user cannot delete jobs without entering a PIN.

— The user name and file name of secure print jobs briefly appear in the public queue
before disappearing to the secure queue, whereas file names should never be visible,
and user names should only be visible once a PIN is entered. In addition, file names of
secure print jobs are visible in the queue once they are released, whereas file names
should be protected from view at all times.

 Seven clicks are required to release a secure print job.

— Settings of secure print jobs are programmable only via the driver and cannot be changed
at the device. In addition, file names of secure print jobs are visible in the queue once
they are released, whereas file names should be protected from view at all times. More-
over, if a secure print job is sent to the device while another job is running, the secure
job won’t fully download to the device until the current job is complete.

 SCAN FUNCTIONS GOOD

 The device offers rated scan speeds of up to 80 ipm in both color and black, and its
tested scan speeds were among the fastest tested to date in duplex mode. In fact, its
tested scan speeds in duplex modes are more than three times the average. Color and
black scan speeds in simplex mode were also above average.

 Overall, the Scan and Send interface was found to be easy to use. Most of the func-
tions for a typical scan job are accessible from the main screen, including color modes,
duplex, file format, PDF options, resolution and quality. A pull-down menu clearly identi-
fies each function, and users simply tap on each choice to pull up the options for each
one. “Virtual” hard keys supported from the Scan and Send interface include reset, stop
current operation and start job.

Most of the functions for a typical scan job are accessible from the main screen, including
color modes, duplex, file format, PDF options, resolution and quality.

— The scan menu does not clearly indicate that additional scan function choices are avail-
able when users scroll down, so they could be missed by the user initially.

 The device supports a very good range of file formats that in addition to the expected
JPEG, PDF, TIFF and XPS also include Encrypted PDF, PDF/A, searchable PDF and
compact PDF. Scan resolutions are available from 100 to 600 dpi.

 The scan menu supports numeric and QWERTY keyboards, and the keys are large and
comfortably spaced, so entering data is easy. There are also dedicated “@,” “.” and
“.com” keys for use in email addresses.

 Carbon copy and blind carbon copy fields are supported.

 The device’s address book allows users to send to multiple destination types in one ses-
sion, including email, Fax, SMB, FTP, Box and PC.

While a scan preview is available, it is oddly named “Play” and can be easily overlooked.

Users can pinch and zoom to enlarge the view, and can navigate through pages and
delete pages, but onscreen editing is not supported. Blank pages can be added. Allow-
ing notes and annotations to be added to blank pages would make the feature more
useful. But notes and annotations cannot be added to any blank pages that are added.

The device supports up to five LDAP servers.

— BLI technicians observed that selecting destinations via LDAP at the control panel is
not intuitive. The contacts icon to begin the selection of LDAP addresses is small and
not easily identifiable, and several unnecessary steps and clicks are required. To search
LDAP addresses at the control panel, users must tap the contacts icon next to the

address box, select the address book, select Server, and then select the text box before
typing in the name to be searched. This multistep process is confusing to users.

— Unlike with most other systems, users cannot select more than one LDAP destination
at a time on the fly; this results in a more than average number of keystrokes required
to scan to multiple destinations (20 to two destinations), whereas most other systems
require only one additional button press for each additional destination.

— The job build function is difficult to find, and only the ability to add pages beyond the
capacity of the document feeder is supported. Users cannot select different features for
different page ranges of a document.

 Initiating scanning from the desktop is simple thanks to Easy Document Creator, which
lets users view scanned images before sending them, convert files to e-Book format and
send faxes.

 The menu is automatically populated when a USB is inserted into the unit.

Users can print from USB in PDF, JPEG, TIFF and XPS file formats, but unlike with a few

competitors, additional file types, including DOC, XLS and PPT formats are not sup-
ported. The USB port is located at the side of the device, whereas preferred would be to
have the USB port at the front of the device.

Print from USB allows users to browse into subfolders, and allows users to update

quantity, paper source and auto-fit prior to releasing a job. Users cannot apply duplex
settings or finishing capabilities. A preview is available, but only for JPEG files.

 The units supports a wide range of file types for scanning to USB—PDF, PDF/A, JPEG,
TIFF, XPS, Compact PDF, searchable PDF and encrypted PDF. When scanning to USB
memory, users can store into subfolders, create new folders from the MFP prior to scan-
ning and name files. In addition, the scan to USB function is maintained in the same
menu as Scan and Send, unlike with some competitors who have separate interfaces
for scan and scan to USB functions.

While background suppression mode is supported for scan to USB files, color-dropout

mode and blank page removal are not.

While compression is not available in black mode, scan file size in default settings is

smaller than average versus the uncompressed file sizes of competing devices, but
slightly higher than average when compared with compressed file sizes.

 Compact PDF in color mode worked well, reducing file size to 125 KB, which is well
below average and also among the smallest of devices tested to date.

 COLOR PRINT/COPY QUALITY EXCELLENT/GOOD

 In print mode, the device produced color output that was superior to that of many com-
petitors for business graphics and for photographic image output. Color was bright and
saturated, and sharpness of fine details, production of pastel shades and reproduction
of light backgrounds were all above average. In photo image output, flesh tones were
natural, and smoothness of images and color halftone range were above average.

In copy mode, the device produced color output that was rated good for both business

graphics and photographic images. Output exhibited bright, saturated color, and back-
ground reproduction was above average, while sharpness of fine details, production of
pastel shades, smoothness and color halftone range were average. Flesh tones were
found to be slightly reddish in copy mode.

BLACK PRINT/COPY QUALITY VERY GOOD

 Text was rated very good in both print and copy modes. It was above average for dark-
ness and for full character formation, and showed no evidence of toner overspray.
Sharpness of characters, and smoothness of curves and serifs, were competitive.

 Line art was also very good in both modes. Production of closely fine lines and consis-
tency of line thickness were above average, and as with printed and copied text, there
was no evidence of toner overspray. Line art did exhibit an average amount of stair-
stepping of diagonal lines.

 Halftone range was excellent in both print and copy modes, with distinct separation
between all levels, smooth fill and minimal to no banding evident.

 Solids were rated very good, exhibiting above average darkness and competitive con-
sistency of coverage in both print and copy modes.

 COLOR PRINT/COPY PRODUCTIVITY GOOD

When printing BLI’s job stream using the PCL driver, the device offers competitive tested

speed and efficiency compared to its peers. The job stream consists of nine documents
of various file types released all at once to the printer to simulate real-world office use of
a shared device during busy times of the day,

The device also offers competitive speeds when printing sets. In addition, the unit’s effi-

ciency, while competitive in simplex mode, is the highest for the group in duplex mode.

When copying sets, the device’s tested speed and efficiency are competitive with the

group.

The device’s first-copy times are competitive from both the document feeder and the

platen.

BLACK PRINT/COPY PRODUCTIVITY GOOD

The device demonstrated competitive overall speed from the PCL driver when printing

BLI’s job stream, but below average efficiency.

The model’s tested speed and efficiency when printing sets are competitive with the

group.

When copying sets, both the model’s tested speed and efficiency are competitive with

the group in 1:2 and 2:2 modes. In 1:1 mode, while the model’s tested speed is competi-
tive with the group, its efficiency is below average compared to its peers.

The device’s first-copy times are competitive with the group from the platen, but below

average from the document feeder.

 EASE OF USE* VERY GOOD

The device’s 10.1" control panel is entirely touch-key based, with no hard keys. Users

interact with the device, which is Android-based, in much the same way they would
when using a smartphone or tablet; tap to select menus, tap and hold apps and widgets
at the control panel to move them or delete them, and swipe to scroll through menus
and screens.

— Users unfamiliar with an Android-based system might find the control panel confusing
to work with initially.

Although not the default setting, customization of the control panel can be locked down

by the administrator, preventing device functions from being moved to anywhere on the
touch-screen display, including to remove media, with a simple touch-and-drag. When
selected, a keypad icon pops open the numeric keypad. The + and – buttons can also
be used to increase or decrease quantity.

The control panel can be tilted up and down freely. “Virtual” hard keys are available

for Reset, Interrupt, Start and Stop. Icons allow users to go to the Home screen, or go
back to the last page they were working in. The display also features an icon that takes

users to a history page in which recently visited pages and functions can be scrolled
through and selected. A Help touch key is available, and although the help provided is
not dynamic in that it doesn’t relate to the currently selected feature; it does provide a
very detailed guideline to all of the device’s functions and capabilities.

 Three different copy interfaces are available; a one-touch copy button, Quick Copy
menu and Copy menu, and users can switch between any of the three with ease. The
one-touch copy button allows users to change only quantity before the job is output.
This is ideal for environments in which most copy jobs do not require any additional set-
tings, allowing users to copy their jobs quickly.

 The Quick Copy interface was found to be highly intuitive, as it offers one-touch buttons
for the most commonly used features used for copy jobs, including simplex/duplex,
paper source and output tray selection, reduction/enlargement, orientation, booklet
layout, N-up, darkness setting, quantity, collate and stapling. The Copy interface offers
the same basic capabilities of the Quick Copy interface, along with more advanced
capabilities, including poster mode, image repeat, watermark, stamp, overlay, erase
edge, image shift, image adjustment, background adjustment, mirror image and covers.

The Quick Copy Interface offers one-touch buttons for the most commonly used
features used for copy jobs, including simplex/duplex, paper source and output
tray selection, reduction/enlargement, orientation, booklet layout, N-up, darkness
setting, quantity, collate and stapling.

— In part because of the many features included on it, the Copy interface was found to be
too busy, and because of the use of non-standard terminology, it could be confusing to
office users familiar with other brands of copier MFPs, most of which use more industry-
standard terminology. For example, for duplex copying, users have to select whether
the original is one- or two-sided and then select whether output should be one-sided
or two-sided, which differs from the more straightforward and commonly seen selec-
tions on the , on which buttons are clearly labeled 1:1, 1:2 and 2:2. Another example is

the terminology used for the selection of portrait and landscape—Upright Images and
Sideways Images—which while not unintuitive, is inconsistent with how these functions
are identified on competing devices.

Copy Interface

 Both the Quick Copy and Copy interfaces provide a graphical review of current job set-
tings, as well as a history of most recently selected job settings.

— While a proof copy touch key is available, the process for selecting it is rather unintui-
tive. When a quantity greater than one is selected, a proof copy selection appears in the
upper left corner of the display. But users must tap on the proof copy selection, then
press start, whereas many competing models will run off a proof copy immediately fol-
lowing the selection of a proof copy key.

 The Apps menu accessible from the Home screen is where users would access software
solutions compatible with Samsung’s eXtensible Open Architecture (XOA) platform, as
well as widgets that allow users to add pre-programmed icons to quickly adjust settings
and initiate jobs, and check on the status of the toner and drums in 1-percent incre-
ments.

 At any point, from any of the tabs of the Copy interface, and from the Quick Copy inter-
face, users can store Programs (settings for frequently jobs) to allow for one-button
selection for certain jobs that would otherwise take several steps each time a user ran
them. These Programs are accessible from the Programs tab under the Apps menu and
can be stored on the Home screen for easy selection.

 Personalized customization of the panel is available via the My Page app. Here, users
can store personal profile information, and well as customized device settings that are
available once a user is logged into the device. In addition, a usage menu details how
many copy, print fax and send jobs a logged-in user has performed, as well as how
close the user is to his or her usage quotas.

Widgets from the Apps menu allow users to add pre-programmed icons to
quickly adjust settings and initiate jobs.

 When a misfeed or other error occurs at the device, an error message detailing the con-
dition is prominently displayed on the screen.

While text and animated graphics provide instructions for misfeed removal, the guid-

ance is not dynamic (i.e., it doesn’t change in response to actions the user takes) and it
doesn’t adequately indicate where the misfeeds are or provide step-by-step instructions
on how to remove them. The misfeed paths inside the machine are not lighted, and the
drawers do not extend far enough to allow for easy user access behind the drawers.

— While the length and width guides slide when adjusting paper size, the paper sizes are
etched in each drawer and not as clearly marked with labels, which is more common
with competing devices.

 The system does automatically detect a new paper size without the user having to make
any adjustments either in the drawer or at the control panel. When paper is loaded in the
bypass tray, the tray is automatically selected as the paper source and the paper size is
automatically detected. The paper limits for each drawer are also clearly indicated.

 BLI test technicians observed that paper drawers, which have a quick release button on
the handles, slide very smoothly in and out.

While users can easily wake the device by touching the interface or placing a document

in the document feeder, if a document is inadvertently left in the document feeder from
a previous user and a second user wakes up the machine, it will automatically make a
copy if users press in the area of the start key or quick copy key.

— While admirable in its intention, the talkback functionality of the device was found to be
difficult to use. As a user slides his or her hands across the interface, a speaker reads
off each feature as it’s scrolled over. The screen also vibrates as a user’s hand comes
into contact with each selection. However, the sound is somewhat muffled and difficult
to make out. Once a function is located, a user must double-tap on the display to select

it, but BLI technicians found that locating the precise spot to tap was difficult, requiring
a fair amount of trial and error.

 Replacing toner cartridges is simple; they simply slide in and out of place. Replacing the
waste toner container is also simple. The drums are also user-replaceable.

Toner cartridges slide easily in and out of place when due

for replacement.

All other components, including the fuser and feed roller, are service-replaceable items.

 The job list that is accessible from the control panel includes print, copy and scan jobs.
Details provided include username/ID, number of originals, number of output pages and
number of sets. Sets are counted up as they are completed, and complete and incom-
plete jobs are also provided, as is date, the time jobs are submitted and completed, and
file name. Multiple jobs can be deleted at once, and users are warned prior to jobs being
deleted.

— While jobs can be deleted, they cannot be modified in any way, not even for quantity.
There are keys for “Promote” and “Hold,” but neither function worked during testing.

*Ease of use rating is based on firmware update V5.B6.12.9999007.00 and later, which makes several important improvements to the early
production model BLI tested. The firmware upgrade is slated to be available in production units and for products in the field in March 2015.
Updates include the ability to lock down the control panel to prevent walk-up users from moving or accidentally deleting functions; more
prominent display of error conditions; and a more clearly labeled icon indicating the availability of a numeric keypad.

 FEATURE SET GOOD

The MultiXpress X4300LX offers standard copy and network print and scan functions,

and optional fax capability.

The device’s 3 GB of memory, and 320-GB hard drive, are competitive with its peers.

The unit has a competitive standard paper capacity of 1,140 sheets.

— Paper weights accommodated through the drawers and bypass are slightly below aver-
age, at 80-lb. cover and 65-lb. cover, respectively. Likewise, the device’s maximum
output paper size of 11.7” x 17” is slightly smaller than average.

— The device’s maximum paper capacity of 2,180 sheets is below average.

 The device supports a standard duplex single-pass feeder (DSPF), which is rare for
competitive devices in this speed range and reduces wear and tear on the document
feeder and on originals by scanning both sides of originals in one pass. The DSPF’s 100-
sheet capacity is competitive among its peers.

 The model offers ID card copy, which makes it easy to copy both sides of a card onto
single page. Additional settings include N-up printing, overlay, envelope mode, cover
mode, poster mode, toner-save mode and watermarking.

Tab printing and banner pages are not supported. According to Samsung, support for

banner pages will be available in March 2015.

 The device supports NFC (Near Field Communication) capability for tap to print, scan
and fax from mobile devices.

 The control panel has an embedded web server, which allows for access to the internet
from the device’s control panel.

 The model incorporates Samsung’s eXtensible Open Architecture (XOA) platform, which
enables customization of the control panel and extends the functionality of the device
by enabling direct communication between the device and back-end applications such
as for document management and accounting.

 IEEE 802.11 b/g/n interfaces are available as options

 Searchable PDF is standard.

 Users can select multi-copy runs of up to 9,999; most competitive models support
multi-copy runs of only up to 999 copies.

In addition to a dual-cassette feeder that adds two 520-sheet paper drawers, an internal

finisher and hole punch unit are also available. In addition, a booklet finisher can fold and
center staple up to 15 sheets to make 60-page booklets.

 The fax option offers support for dual lines.

SUPPORTING TEST DATA

Test Environment: This product was tested in BLI’s 10,000-square-foot U.S. test lab, in an environment monitored by
an Extech RH S20 Digital RH/Temperature Recorder and Honeywell Model 61 Seven-Day Temperature/Relative Humidity
Chart Recorder. All products lab tested by BLI are powered by dedicated circuits that are protected by ESP (Electronic
Systems Protection, Inc.) surge protectors to prevent transient power and communication disturbances from affecting
equipment under test.

Test Equipment: BLI’s dedicated test network, consisting of Windows 2003 and Microsoft Exchange servers, Windows 7
workstations, 10BaseT/100BaseTX network switches and CAT5 cabling.

Test Duration: Products are tested for two months, five weeks of which consists of a durability test during which the
product is run at its manufacturer-rated maximum monthly duty cycle, with 25 percent of the test volume comprised
of copy jobs and 75 percent comprised of print jobs. BLI’s daily test usage is designed to replicate real-world use
over an eight-hour workday, and as such includes a mix of various-size documents, simplex and duplex modes, and
a mix of short, moderate and long run lengths, and on/off cycles, throughout the day. The durability evaluation also
includes testing of the document feeder/scanner in simplex and duplex modes for an additional 10 percent of the monthly
maximum volume, evenly divided over the course of the test. Imaging media includes 20-lb. virgin letter, legal and ledger
multi-use paper, with 80 percent of the volume generated on letter, 10 percent on legal and 10 percent on ledger. While
70% of the output is produced on virgin paper, Brand type Recycled multi-use paper is used for the remainder of the
volume—10% each of paper consisting of 30, 50 and 100 percent post-consumer.

Tested Configuration: Base model with optional dual cassette feeder.

Test Procedures: The test methods and procedures employed by BLI in its lab testing include BLI’s proprietary procedures
and industry-standard test procedures, including a BLI-developed variation of ASTM’s 1318-90 Test Method for
Determination of Productivity using Electrostatic Copy Machines. In addition to a number of proprietary test documents,
BLI uses an industry-standard KATUN test original for evaluating black image quality and test suites from Quality Logic to
evaluate applications compatibility. Besides a visual observation, color print quality is tested using the ANSI standard IT8
Color Test Target, which is read using the Minolta CM503i Spectrophotometer, and samples are analyzed using the CIE
XY Chromaticity Diagram. Furthermore, density of black and color output is measured using an X-Rite 428 Densitometer.
Georgia-Pacific Spectrum Multi-Use 20-lb. bond is used in the tests, 30 percent of which is recycled paper containing 30,
50 and 100 percent post-consumer content. Image quality is tested using Georgia-Pacific Printing Paper (95 brightness,
22-lb. bond).

Efficiency is tested using a 10-page full-color document and a 10-page black document. BLI obtains the overall efficiency for each mode
by averaging the efficiency ratings (derived by dividing the tested speed of the device by the rated speed and then multiplying by 100) for
each run length (1, 5 and 10 sets). The unit’s efficiency was tested using the PCL driver at 600 dpi.

*A universal PostScript driver is downloadable from Samsung’s web site, but was not tested on the device.
BLI’s job stream includes Word documents, Outlook e-mail messages, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, HTML and Acrobat PDF files, totaling
19 pages. This test simulates the type of traffic a typical device might experience in a real-world, multi-user environment. All of the files
are sent to the device as a group, at which time the stopwatch begins; timing ends when the last page of the last file exits the device. Job
stream efficiency is determined by the percentage of the rated speed at which the device operates when producing real-world jobs. The
closer the rate is to 100%, or if it exceeds 100%, the more efficient the device.
