Learning Activity – Filipino Values

The strengths and weaknesses of the Filipino character have their roots in many factors such
as:
1. the home environment,
2. the social environment,
3. culture and language,
4. history,
5. the educational system,
6. religion,
7. economic environment,
8. political environment,
9. mass media, and
10. Leadership and role models
Choose 2 factors and discuss briefly. You may give examples to substantiate your discussion.

 The Home Environment

The Filipino is brought up in an environment where one's survival is dependent on

one's ability to form relationships with others. It is natural for the Filipino to develop a
reliance on familial and interpersonal ties in a poor nation where resources are few and
where the mechanisms designed to meet people's needs might be insensitive, ineffective, or
non-existent.
Example: Having a close family ties is positive if its all about love and unity for the family,
but it becomes a weakness for a Filipino if one of them will become dependent always.

 Religion

Filipino optimism and the ability to accept life's difficulties are rooted in their
religious beliefs. Although religion instills attitudes of resignation and a preoccupation
with the hereafter in the Filipino, it also instills attitudes of hope and optimism in the
Filipino. We become more prone to being victimized by opportunism, injustice,
exploitation, and superstition as a result of our circumstances.
Example: Pakikisama as a Filipino values is good when doing it with all your heart and
doing right, like when you and your friend have different religion. But it will be a negative
impact if your questioning their beliefs and judging what they need they do as part of their
religion
