Discourse
Directions: Read the instructions and all the items in each test type carefully. Use black or blue pen
ink only. Avoid any form of erasure, alteration, and superimposition on the final answer.

I. Identification: Identify whether each paragraph is a description, narration, exposition, or

argumentation. Write your answer on the space provided. (5 items x 2 points)

Description 1. The setting sun sank lower, gilding the distant blue mountains with awesome
majesty and arousing cool breezes that began to stir with the coming of the
evening. The western sky was in brilliant copper color, the peaks below it harsh
and forbidding in spite of their reflected gold. For a hundred miles around the
oasis there were only dry and dusty sand in which nothing could live to save a
few patches of shrubs.

Description 2. Raising goats was always disastrous for the land. The goats bit off not the edible
shoots, but instead, they tore the whole bush out of the ground, roots and all;
they even broke up the thin crust of soil with their sharp hooves, reducing it all
to dust wherever they want.

Exposition 3. Do you think that because of their destructive habits, the goats were the enemy of
the people? Oh no, because the goats provided them with milk and meat.
Without which, they would have died. They provided them with leather for the
clothing and sandals, and skins to make into water bags.

Argumentation 4. There were milling crowds everywhere! The men, for the most part, wore short
kilts of embroidered cloth with heavy thronged-sandals of goat leather. The
women, as slaves, were dressed in long gowns called abba. The slave women,
well-muscled and sturdy, wore only loin-skirts and went bare-breasted and
barefoot, too, as they worked.

Narration 5. The old woman came in with a pitcher of wine and set it on the table, and took
three pottery mugs from the cupboard and set them down, too, then hobbled out
again in silence. Rahab filled the mugs and said slowly, “I was on the rooftop
and I saw you hiding. I saw the soldiers searching for you. Will you tell me
why?”
