Seminar

1. 4G TECHNOLOGY summarizes the rapid development of 4G mobile technology standards including WiMAX and LTE to provide faster wireless access and replace 2G and 3G networks by 2010. 2. Mobile Cloud Computing discusses how cloud computing will transform mobile applications by allowing access from any web-enabled device, not just smartphones, and will disrupt the current model where apps are tied to carriers. 3. ANDROID provides an overview of the Android operating system, including its application framework, Dalvik virtual machine, integrated browser, media support, and development tools. It is an open platform designed for developers, users, and industry.

SEMINAR TOPICS

1. 4G TECHNOLOGY
Even though the fourth-genera tion (4G) wireless story has not yet been written in stone 4G is still being defined the industry is clearly moving aggressively to a 4G world. In order to satisfy the expectation of the users to have more advanced wireless access even in the mobile environments, research and development efforts for realizing the Fourth-Generation (4G) mobile communication system has been discussed. Both the pace of 4G adoption and the rate of standards development are by far faster than all previous generations of wireless. Whereas it took nearly 10 years for 3G to roll out and become standard ized, 4G activities are proceeding on an accelerated three-year cycle. For instance, the fi rst instantiation of 4G the rollout of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) systems is already well under way in the networks of many wireless operators, and several new entrants are planning nationwide and even continentwide WiMAX networks. At the same time, standardization and technology initiatives for other 4G tech nologies are proceeding rapidly. Th e 4G evolution of the UMTS standard, called the Long Term Evolution (LTE) project, is now being standardized within the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). And the 3GPP2 has standardized Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB) to improve CDMA for 4G applications and requirements. As this pace continues, many in the industry consider the year 2010 to be the infl ection point for 4G mobile broadband the point at which 4G will replace 2G and 3G infrastructures.

2. Mobile Cloud Computing

The term "cloud computing" is being bandied about a lot these days, mainly in the context of the "future of the web." But cloud computing's potential doesn't begin and end with the personal computer's transformation into a thin client - the mobile platform is going to be heavily impacted by this technology as well. Their recent report, Mobile Cloud Computing, theorizes that the cloud will soon become a disruptive force in the mobile world, eventually becoming the dominant way in which mobile applications operate. The mobile application market is about to change radically, from suppliers' standpoint and from the consumer access standpoint due to the emergence of widgets, the most compelling of mobile cloud applications.. With a Western-centric view of the world, it can sometimes be hard to remember that not everyone owns a smartphone. There are still a large number of markets worldwide where the dominant phone is a feature phone. While it's true that smartphones will grow in percentage and feature phones will become more sophisticated in time, these lower-end phones are not going away anytime soon. And it's their very existence which will help drive the mobile cloud computing trend. There are two primary reasons why cloud computing will become a disruptive force in the mobile world. The first is simply the number of users the technology has the power to reach: far more than the number of smartphone users alone. The second reason has to do with how applications are distributed today. Currently, mobile applications are tied to a carrier. If you want an iPhone app, for example, you have to first have a relationship with the mobile operator who

carries the iPhone. If you want a Blackberry app, the same rule applies. But with mobile clouding computing applications, as long as you have access to the web, you have access to the mobile application.

3. ANDROID
Android is a complete and modern embedded operating system. It has a cutting edge mobile user experiance and a world class software stack for building applications. It is an open platform for devolopers, users and industry. The Android SDK provides the tools and APIs necessary to begin developing applications on the Android platform using the Java programming language. Features of android include.. Application framework enabling reuse and replacement of components Dalvik virtual machine optimized for mobile devices Integrated browser based on the open source WebKit engine Optimized graphics powered by a custom 2D graphics library; 3D graphics based on the OpenGL ES 1.0 specification (hardware acceleration optional) SQLite for structured data storage Media support for common audio, video, and still image formats (MPEG4, H.264, MP3, AAC, AMR, JPG, PNG, GIF) GSM Telephony (hardware dependent) Bluetooth, EDGE, 3G, and WiFi (hardware dependent) Camera, GPS, compass, and accelerometer (hardware dependent) Rich development environment including a device emulator, tools for debugging, memory and performance profiling, and a plugin for the Eclipse IDE
