MID SEMESTER EXAM. (Autumn semester 2020-21) Date: 25.01.2021

Sub: Engineering Physics (PH 1101) CS and EE [B.Tech (Hons) 1st sem] Max. Marks: 30
Time: 9am – 11am (Including uploading of answer sheet)

Attempt any THREE questions

1.(a) Obtain Gauss law in electricity in differential form from integral form using appropriate theorem.
Find the directional derivative of ϕ = x2 y + xz at ( 1,2,-1 ) in the direction of 2i - 2j + k (4)

(b) Show that the law of conservation of charge (equation of continuity) follows from Maxwell’s
equations. (3)

(c) The magnetic intensity in a region of free space is given by H = j H0 cos ω( t – z/c ) , where c is the
speed of light. What is the displacement current density if there is no free charge?. (3)

2.(a) Write the integral expression of Poynting theorem . Give physical meaning of the term involving
Poynting vector in the expression. (3)

(b) Calculate the amplitudes of the electric (E) and the magnetic (B) fields in a microwave beam of
intensity 100 Watts / m2 travelling in free space. (3)

(c) Derive wave equations involving electric and magnetic field vectors using differential form of
Maxwell’s equations in region of space where there is no charge or current and hence find the speed of
the electromagnetic wave . (4)

3.(a) Two polaroids are crossed to each other. Now, let one of them be rotated through 60o. Calculate
the percentage of intensity of the incident unpolarized light that will pass through the system. (4)

(b) Discuss analytically how a calcite quarter wave plate could be used to produce circularly polarized
light when a linearly polarized light is incident normally on it. (6)

4.(a) An electromagnetic wave is incident normally from vacuum on a substance of refractive index 1.5 .
Find the ratio of the electric field amplitude of the reflected wave to that of the incident wave. What
percentage of the total intensity of the incident wave is transmitted into the substance . (4)

(b) The electric field vectors of two electromagnetic waves propagating in the z - direction in free
space are E1 = i E0 cos ( kz – ωt ) + j E0 sin ( kz – ωt ) and E2 = i E0 sin ( kz – ωt ) + j E0 cos ( kz – ωt )

(i) Find the state of polarization of each wave. (ii) Also , determine the state of polarization of the
wave resulting from the superposition of these two waves. (6)
