Condensed Matter Physics I Tutorial Sheet 5 1.

In a free electron model, the probability that an electron travels for a time t before scattering is proportional to exp(-t/). (a) Calculate the mean time between collisions, (b) Calculate the rms deviation of scattering times. 2. Consider a 1 mm3 crystal of gold with a residual resistance ratio of 2000 in a magnetic field of 5T. For gold, n = 5.9x1022 cm-3 and (300K) = 2.2 -cm. (a) Find the Hall coefficient in the free electron model, (b) Find the cyclotron frequency c. (c) Find c at T = 0 K and at T = 300 K. 3. Determine and plot the free electron empty lattice energy bands along [111] direction for an FCC crystal in the reduced zone picture. Draw at least the first six bands. 4. The relationship between the energy and momentum of electrons for a particular 1D band is E(k) = -8 2 cos kxa. (a) Sketch E(k) with labeled axis, (b) Obtain the bandwidth of the band, (c) Obtain the effective mass of the electrons for small k. 5. Consider electrons on a 2D square lattice in tight-binding approximation, E = E0 (2 cos kxa cos kya). (a) Plot a few constant energy lines on the kx, ky plane. (b) Show that most of the constant energy lines cross the Brillouin zone boundary at a right angle. (c) Sketch E(k) along the W X line. 6. Find the dispersion relation for tightly bound electrons in a linear lattice with atomic separation a, and derive the density of states and the effective mass.
