EE-311 Final Examination

(1a) In spherical coordinates, E = 2r/(r2 + a2)2ar V/m. Find the potential at any point,
using the reference V = 100 V at r = a.

(1b) Given the electric field E = (y + 1)ax + (x − 1)ay + 2az find the potential difference
between the points (3, 2,−1) and (−2,−3, 4).

(2). A point charge for which Q = 4 × 10−16 C and m = 5 × 10−26 kg is moving in the
combined fields E = 100ax + 200ay - 300az V/m and B = 3ax - 2ay + az mT. The charge
velocity at t = 0 is v(0) = (4ax − 3ay + 2az)105 m/s.

(a) Find the magnitude of the velocity and the kinetic energy of the charge at t = 0;
(b) Find the electric, magnetic and combined forces on the charge and acceleration at
t = 0.

(3). A toroidal core has a rectangular cross section defined by the surfaces ρ = 2 cm, ρ = 3
cm, z = 4 cm, and z = 5 cm. The core material has a relative permeability μr = 10. An emf
of 150 A· t establishes a flux in the a direction.

(a) Find H (ρ) and B (ρ).


(b) Find Φtotal and its inductance L.

(4). A solid conductor of circular cross section with a radius of 5 mm has a conductivity
that varies with radius. The conductor is 50 m long, and there is a potential difference of
0.1 V dc between its two ends. Within the conductor, H = 105ρ4a A/m.

(a) Find current density J and the current I in the wire.


(b) Calculate the conductivity σ and the resistance between the two ends.

(5a). Let A = (2y − z)ax + 3x2zay Wb/m in a certain region of free space.

(5b). The magnetic field intensity is given in a certain region of space as

6. Two coaxial conducting cylinders of radius 2 cm and 4 cm have a length of 2 m. The
region between the cylinders contains a layer of dielectric from ρ = c to ρ = d with εr = 8.

(a) Find the capacitance if c = 2 cm, d = 4 cm (hint: this is two capacitors in series).
(b) Find the capacitance for d = 5 cm, and the volume of the dielectric is the same as
in part (a).

Note: The capacitance for the coaxial capacitor as shown in figure 1 is given by

7(a) Find an expression for the magnetic energy stored per unit length in a coaxial
transmission line consisting of conducting sleeves of negligible thickness, having radii a
and b. A medium of relative permeability μr fills the region between conductors. Assume
when the current I flows in both conductors, the magnetic field within the coax is found
to be H = I /(2 ) a .
