Q1. (a) Discuss the principle of superposition of waves.

(b) Derive Energy in SHM. Also give graphical representation of it.

(c) A particle is vibrating in simple harmonic motion with an amplitude of 4cm. At what
displacement from the equilibrium position is its energy half potential and half kinetic?

(d) A condenser of 2000 pF is charged to a potential difference of 20 V, and then discharged


through a coil of inductance 0.05 H, calculate the frequency of oscillations.

(b) What must be the value of b so that the vector field p represented by p = i(3x + by - 2z) +

Q3. (a) Show that Ampere’s law is inconsistent in time varying fields. How did Maxwell
modify Ampere’s law to make it consistent under all conditions? Find the expression for
displacement current and discuss its physical significance. In what sense displacement current is
a current?

(b) Derive Poynting theorem. Give physical significance of each term involved.

Q4. (a) Derive the wave equation for an isotropic dielectric medium. Prove the orthogonality
of electric field, magnetic field and propagation vectors. Also, find the impedance of the medium
for the electromagneticwaves.

(b) Show that electromagnetic waves get damped inside a conducting medium. Find the phase
between electric and magnetic fields and obtain an expression for penetration depth from the
surface of themedium.
