ONE ACT PLAY

DREADFUL

Samantha is an aloof ever since a child. She is now in college. Waking up, Eating, Going to school then

come home, that’s been her life’s routine ever since. She belongs in a wealthy family, growing up she

gets every material thing that everyone wanted. But just like a lost child who yearns for love and

affection, she also wanted her parents to see her. She did everything back when she was a kid just to have

her parent’s spare time, but her parents are too focused on their business that they forgot to take care of

her. She was raised by her nanny.

A lot of painful memories, a lot of missed opportunities to be happy, indeed she is broken but something

adds up that will crumble her world and whole being.

Samantha comes home after a tiring day at school, upon opening the door she was surprised upon seeing

her parents, sitting on the couch and laughing their hearts out. Her parents stood up upon seeing her enters

the house.

ELLISE WILLIAM (Samantha’s mom): Finally you are here already Samantha. You’re dad and I have

been waiting for you.

SAMANTHA: What makes you two come home? Thought you have a business trip? (Samantha asked

with a creased forehead).

TIMOTHY WILLIAM (Samantha’s dad): We were in Europe for business, but then we were invited in

charity events. The beneficiaries of the events are the kids in the orphanage, we got to meet a lot of kids

there all of them are unfortunate to grow up without a parent by their side.

ELLISE: Upon seeing them we remember you; we have a lot of shortcomings as your parents and never

got a chance to show you how much we love you. Your birthday is in two days right? why don’t we

throw a party!? (Ellise excitedly exclaim and cling onto her daughter’s arms.)

TIMOTHY: We wanted to make up with you, we’ve been focused on our business to the point that we

forgot to be a parents to you. (her dad talks while smiling to her).

SAMANTHA: I am sorry to burst your bubbles, but you guys are already late about mending the

relationship we have. I am too old for some childish parties and bonding that you guys have in mind. I am

a graduating student so I prefer to study in my room the whole day than to go places with you two. I’m

used to celebrating my birthdays in my room reading books and stuffs, and by the way I also got used

living without you so you can go back to minding your business and other matters. I’m cool with it. (She

took off her mom’s arms in her and walks out).

Ellise and Timothy was dumbfounded about their daughter’s cold behavior towards them. They thought

that she’d be happy about everything they said but opposite happened. Ellise sat on the couch with a sad

smile, while Timothy is shocked and guilty at the same time.

ELLISE: What have we done? We are too focused in giving her the best life but ended up being

responsible for her pain. (Ellise cried. Timothy held her wife with a sad eyes.)

TIMOTHY: hush now wife, we’ll do everything for her to open up again to us.

Meanwhile at Samantha’s room……

Samantha enters her room with a heavy feelings building up inside her.

SAMANTHA: Why? I missed them, I wanted to hug them but I just can’t. I love them but I also hated

them.

Samantha began to cry in silent while hugging their family picture when she was still a kid. She’s broken

once again. Painful memories began to flash trough her mind. Her graduation which none of them

attended, her birthday parties that they missed because of the emergency in the company, her being sick

and confined in a hospital but none of them were there to take care of her.

SAMANTHA: Even if I wanted to give them a chance, I can’t. I no longer know how to open my heart

for them.

Samantha stopped from crying when she felt something flowing in her nose. She touched her nose and

saw blood. (Her nose is bleeding).

SAMANTHA: For these past months I’ve been experiencing nosebleed, headaches and dizziness. I

consulted a doctor last week, he ran a test to me and the result will be emailed today, just like what he

said.

Samantha checked her email and saw an email from the doctor asking her to meet in person tomorrow in

his office.

SAMANTHA: Why would he want to see me personally? Thought he’ll be sending me the result now.
Samantha is too busy thinking about the doctor’s email that it leads her to sleep.

In the morning……..

Samantha woke up and get dressed for her meeting with the doctor. After getting ready she go to the

dining to eat breakfast and to her surprise her parents are also present.

ELLISE: Good morning Sam, I made you breakfast come join us. (Ellise gave her a smile which sent

warm to her heart but ignored it and sit on the left side of her father who also greeted her a good morning

which she replies a nod).

TIMOTHY: Going somewhere? Today is Saturday you don’t have a class.

SAMANTHA: I have an appointment with a friend (she lied, she doesn’t want them to know about her

condition).

Timothy just nod and continued eating. Ellise on the other hand keep glancing at Samantha which makes

her feel awkward.

She finished eating, then told them she’s leaving. She drive to the hospital and at some point she couldn’t

help but to feel uneasy. “What if I am sick?” What if I am dying?” she has a lot of what if’s that it made

her laugh. “oh come on.. I am being paranoid again”.

Upon arriving to the hospital she went to her doctor’s office, she knocked three times and opened the door

when the doctor said comes in.

DOCTOR: Ms. William you’re here already. Take a sit (instructing her to sit on the chair in front of his

desk).

SAMANTHA: I expected you to send me my result but instead you asked to see me in person, Am I

sick?

DOCTOR: Well I wanted to present the result to you in person since it is kind a shocking and so I could

give you a proper explanation.

Samantha began to feel nervous upon hearing the doctor. Her mind went blank upon hearing that she have

a GLIOBLASTOMA a stage 4 tumor and is considered as one of the worst types of brain cancer.

As soon as the doctor stopped talking she stands up and walks away. She is walking in the hallway of the

hospital without minding the people looking at her whose face is full of tears.

She drove away, her mind was blanked she couldn’t think of anything but she remembers her parents
smiling faces.

SAMANTHA: Guess it is really too late, Just when I am about to forget everything and give my parent’s

a second chance. Why?! Why is life so cruel to me?!!!! Am I not allowed to be happy?!

It’s already afternoon but Samantha couldn’t care. she is in the middle of a highway with only few cars

passing by. She looked at the outside and saw the sea. She goes out from the car and went to the sea. She

sat on the sand and looked at the sea and began to cry again. She’s crying while calling her mom.

After the draining moment at the sea she decided to go home. It was past 7 in the evening when she come

home, her parents are not in the house. She entered the mini bar in their house and took bottles of

alcohols.

She sat on the couch and began to drink. She finished two bottle of alcohol and her sight are beginning to

be clouded due to her tears.

She is too broken and asking for help inside, but she has no one. She throw the bottle on the floor and it

scattered. She’s crying, shouting and breaking things when her parents arrive running towards her with a

worried look.

Ellise was shocked when she saw her daughter sitting on the floor with a bleeding hands.

ELLISE: Samantha what happened to you?

TIMOTHY: Hey look at us, what happened? Why are you crying? (Her dad asked while hugging her)

Samantha began to cry so loud upon feeling the warmth of her parent’s embrace.

SAMANTHA: I have no one growing up, other kids have their parents every school fair and graduation

but I have my nanny. I have always wished that maybe on my birthday, graduation and school gatherings

you’d surprise me and show up but all my hopes was vanish as times pass by. I began to think that you

never want me, that you never love me. (Samantha talks in between her sobs. Timothy and Ellise is

hurting watching their daughter breakdown) I never imagined that you two would be here wanting to

make things up with me. I hate you mom and dad but I still love you.

TIMOTHY: We are sorry for making you feel that way; we are too focused on making our business

grow for your future but ended up like this. Give us second chance Princess and we’ll promise to shower

you with all our love.(Timothy said with a teary eyes while Ellise couldn’t talk because of crying in pain

for her daughter).

SAMANTHA: I wanted to give it a try but I don’t know where and how to start and just at the time that I

am ready to open up, I don’t think I still have time.

ELLISE: What do you mean?

SAMANTHA: I don’t have an appointment with a friend since I don’t have one; I went to the hospital to

meet with the doctor who ran a test in me last week. I have been experiencing headaches, nosebleeds and

dizziness and I do collapse at school sometimes for the past months, I always get tired and sleepy so I

went to the hospital for checkup and I received the result today. I have a Glioblastoma a stage four brain

tumor.

Silence filled the room. Timothy began to feel weak and sat on the floor with his hand covering her face

while crying. Ellise who hugged her daughter tight and keep on crying and Samantha who’s crying but

happy because at last she has her parents to lean on and tell problems with.

Months passed and Samantha is having her regular checkups and chemo therapy. Every session her

parents were there to take care of her and so for her? That is more than enough.
