JAPAN Rizal's visit to the Land of the Cherry Blossoms was one of the happiest times of
his life. From February 28 to April 13, 1888, he was in Japan for a month and a half. He was
enchanted by Japan's natural beauty, the Japanese people's demeanor, and the magnificent
shrines. He also fell in love with a Japanese girl, whose beauty filled his sorrowing heart with joy
and romance. Rizal landed in Yokohama on Tuesday, February 28, 1888, and stayed at the Grand
Hotel. He arrived in Tokyo the next day and booked a room at the Tokyo Hotel, where he remained
from March 2 to March 7. The city of Tokyo left an impression on him. Juan Perez caballero,
secretary of the Spanish Legation, paid Rizal a call after his arrival in Tokyo. He was invited to
dwell at the Spanish Legation by the latter. Rizal was aware that this was a tactic used by the
Spanish government to keep tabs on him, but he agreed regardless. He moved out of the Tokyo
Hotel on March 7 and into the Spanish Legation. He became good friends with Perez Caballero,
describing him as a youthful, fine, and brilliant writer. Rizal was able to communicate in Japanese
on his first day in Tokyo.

He struggled to shop since he couldn't communicate and was mocked by children. Rizal
opted to learn Japanese as a result of his circumstances. Within a few days, he was able to
communicate. He studied Japanese drama, arts, music, and judo in Japan. Museums, libraries,
art galleries, and temples were among the places he visited. He visited Meguro, Nikko, Hakone,
Miyanoshita, and the charming villages of Japan. During one time, Rizal went to the park and
heard the Tokyo band playing a classical work of Strauss. He was blown away by the outstanding
performances of Western music. He reflected on how excellent their performances are and
wondered how they have assimilated modern European music to the point where they can play
the beautiful classics of European composers so beautifully. The band came to a halt, and to his
amazement, they were conversing.
