Tandem - Check
SMCS - 4064-535

Introduction
The following procedure is used to check the wear of the final drive thrust washer.

Check Preparation

Personal injury or death can result from improper lifting or blocking.

When a hoist or jack is used to lift any part or component, stand clear of
the area. Be sure the hoist or jack has the correct capacity to lift a
component. Install blocks or stands before performance of any work
under a heavy component.

Approximate weights of the components are shown. Clean all surfaces

where parts are to be installed.

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or

near the machine.

Prevent possible injury by performing the procedure that follows before

working on the machine.

1. Park the machine on a level surface.

2. Apply the service brake to stop the machine. Move the transmission control lever to the NEUTRAL
position.

3. Move the speed control lever to the LOW IDLE position.

4. Engage the parking brake.

5. Stop the engine.

6. Turn the engine start switch to OFF position and remove the key.

7. Turn battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.

Check Procedure

View of the space between the cat walk and the enclosure

1. With the machine on level ground, record the distance from the enclosure to the edge of the walkway (A).

Note: Make sure that the implements are raised so that the machine weight is fully on the tires.

2. Raise the back of the machine into the air. Using the same reference points on the enclosure and the
walkway, record dimension (B).

3. Subtract the value found in Step 1 from the value found in Step 2, and record the difference. The
difference is the tandem sag measurement.

4. If the tandem sag measurement reaches 7 mm (0.28 inch) or more on the 14M and 10 mm (0.39 inch) or
more on the 16M, then schedule an immediate rebuild to prevent square or top hat housing damage.

5. Repeat this process on the other side of the machine.
