Possible Questions:

Why did you choose Contemporary Literature?

The very reason why we choose contemporary, because we wanted to study

those new literary pieces especially in poetry. Observing those literature teachers, mostly

the materials they used are old literary pieces or those published in classical or

renaissance period. In our study, we want to know if contemporary Literature especially

Philippine literature, can be a tool in the teaching process. In the Contemporary period,

we have chosen the most recent literary pieces we've found from 2010-2017.

Why did you not include the phonological deviation?

Out of the nine different kinds of deviations, we excluded the phonological deviation

because analyzing this requires a long period. Since we only have limited time for us to

finish our study, it won't be easy on our part to still include this kind of deviation given the

fact that the phonological deviation in poetry will not be easy to identify.

Why did you change your study?

Originally, our study was quantitative. Due to some difficulties, especially on how

we will be conducting our study, it was not easy then to give and gather the questionnaires

given to the respondents since there were no face-to-face classes.

Why Philippine Literature?

We chose Philippine Literature because we believe that it is worth studying for. We

also wanted to prove that Philippine Literature is rich and that it can be a reliable tool in

teaching English Subject specifically in literature.

What is the hardest to identify?

From all the deviations we included in our study, the Semantic deviation for us is the

hardest to identify. Identifying semantic deviation can be challenging, because a single

word or phrase can have multiple meanings depending on its context. Thus, it requires a

thorough understanding of the topic in order to come up with the message or the meaning.

Why poetry?

Of all genre, why did we chose poetry? Our answer is that poetry is difficult to understand.

It consists of the serious compression of information in very few words. One must know

the structure, form and literary devices to fully appreciate the work.

(We know how difficult poetry is, especially when you will try to get the meaning. As

students, we know the feeling every time a teacher discusses literature, especially poems.

There were times wherein the student would be assigned to read a poem and this would

be purely reading without understanding and deepening the meaning. (Of course, I

experienced that) I don’t care about the elements of the poem, such as the structure,

themes, figurative language, and other aspects of it. Now that we conducted this study,

we realize the impact or effect of these elements when getting the meaning and message
of the poem. In the same way, we will do our best to apply what we have learned to our

future students. We will allow them to understand deviations and give the opportunity for

them to analyze a poem to get a deeper understanding.)

Pedagogical implications

Studying literature, especially poetry, allows English students to develop the ability to

think critically about the content of the literary pieces. This study can awaken the learners'

interest and look profoundly and analyze every detail of what they are reading to

understand the meaning behind each line fully. Also, studying deviations and making a

space for understanding each deviation could open the door to an appreciation of the

authors' writing style. Moreover, this study is beneficial also to language teachers,

especially Filipino language teachers, to use the Philippine literature in teaching. It will

not just limit the teaching materials to that old literature. Modern literature will be allowed

to be utilized in language teaching and learning. In this way, we can appreciate the beauty

of our literary pieces.
