salubong
Salubong is an Easter Sunday tradition
commemorating the reunion of the
Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ following
His resurrection. The rite is often
initiated by two distinct processions
from opposite ends of a town, with Jesus
at one end and Mary at the other. The
two processions will then meet in the
middle.
salubong
The ritual procession usually starts at 4AM.
Mother Mary covered in her lambong or
black veil (represents mourning).
Men dressed in white carries the image of
the Risen Christ. Women accompanies the
image of Mary covered with her lambong.
An angel (played by a little girl) will lift the
black veil off Mary’s face.
The removal of the mourning veil reveals
the white-clad Mother who rejoices in
seeing her Risen Son.
insights and how this
relates to filipino
psychology
One of the basic tenets of Filipino Psychology that we can
relate to in practicing this reenactment is the pivotal
interpersonal value. Under this is the value of
"pakikiramdam". Compassion, empathy, and sympathy are
all examples of pakikiramdam. It is the most important
aspect of common inner vision. It refers to heightened
sensitivity and alertness. Pakikiramdam is a hidden
individual process in which a person seeks to understand
and experience the feelings and intentions of another.
insights and how this

psychology
Pakikiramdam value can be related to Salubong because
through this reenactment, we can be compassionate and
we can empathized on how our Blessed Virgin Mary
rejoiced when Jesus has risen. This value may not also be
applied only on this event but also to all other practices.
Through pakikiramdam, we learn what Jesus went through
throughout this Holy Week. We did not only learn about
his passion, death, and resurrection but we relived and
felt or naramdaman every event that happened.
