We can use should, had better, why don’t you,etc
Ex : You should study hard from now. You will have an exam next month
 Giving suggestion not to do something
We can use shouldn’t and had better not
Ex : You shouldn’t go home late. Your parents will be angry

1. Social function of Giving Suggestion


 To ask and give suggestion to someone and give responses to the suggestion whether
accepting or refusing it.
 To help someone who needs any suggestion or advice by giving our personal idea and
opinion in our daily life.

Such as should, ought to and could

2. You + ought to + (base form of verb) => You ought to study harder

Such as : Why don’t you…. ? How about…. ?. What about….?
1. Why don’t you (infinitive)? => Why don’t you study harder?
2. How about + (N/V-ing)? => How about going to the beach?
3. What about + (N/V-ing)? => What about visiting the library?

e. Advising with a stronger way


Using had better to suggest someone is stronger than using should
1. You + had better + (infinitive) => You had better study harder before the
exam starts
2. You + had better + not + + (infinitive) => You had better not eat sweets or
you will get toothache

f. Other ways
 I suggest + that clause => I suggest (that ) you should meet your teacher
 I recommended + that clause => I recommended (that) you come a bit
earlier next time
 I think + (that clause) => I think you should help your mother
