BACKGROUND/CONTEXT

Sexual Wellness Workshop: Case Study Cycle & Secondary 4

Title of unit
Grade level

English Language Arts

Subject area

- Inform students on signs of an abusive relationship and how to safely respond.

- Inform students on the importance of sexual awareness.

Goal for Activity
- The topic will engage high school students as they read, highlight, and work in groups
on the subject of abusive relationships, which is a relevant topic for their age group.

- The activity is part of a workshop that was selected and suggested by our CT. We
decided to go with this sexual wellness activity as it was recommended by our CT, and
we thought it still resonated with the understanding of relationships in the 21 st century.

Rationale for Activity

- The case study activity, which presents a demonstration of an abusive relationship that
is followed by 6 questions, will reinforce the students’ understanding of what an abusive
relationship looks like. This activity will allow them to properly respond if they ever
came across such situations both inside and outside of school.

QEP Subject Area - Competency 1: Uses language/ talk to communicate and learn.
Competencies
Students will develop a more complex/professional style of speech via class

participation and discussions (QEP). Students will be able to work in

small groups and participate in class discussions. An established ground rule

before the Workshop was appropriate language and having students learn how to speak
within the parameters of a sensitive subject, such as relationship abuse,

gave students an opportunity to understand the tone and depth of the conversation.

- Competency 2: Reads and listens to written, spoken, and media text.

Students will talk about their stances on the text

and what it means to them. They will also interpret the relationship between

the reader and the author (QEP). Students will read parts of the Case Study and will
answer the sheets upon self-reflecting on their stance towards the situation presented in
the case study.

Differentiation: All the text on the worksheet was read out loud, so that auditory learners
can benefit. Students were also placed in groups, so that they can cooperate with their
peers and complement each others’ learning styles. Students were also able to contribute
to discussions both orally and in written form.

Differentiation /
Attention to EDI
EDI: Before the activity begins, ground rules will be established with the students, one of
them being that they should be sensitive to their peers, because some of them might be
affected by the topic at hand.

ACTIVITY PLAN

Know: Students will understand the signs of an abusive relationship, and the different
forms of abuse. They will also be informed as to how they should handle cycles of abuse,
whether for themselves or a friend. Students will acquire factual information,
terminology, and vocabulary that will inform their decisions on how to identify and create
an action to avoid abusive circumstances for them or for their friends.

Understand: Students will be able to identify these signs of abuse in their personal lives
and will be able to react appropriately. In class, they will model appropriate language and
terminology for different types of abuse, such as sexual, emotional, psychological, and
Student will physical. They should be able to explain what behaviours are abusive and be able to
know/understand/do as a appropriately apply a standard safety plan for the abusive relationship. Students will
result of this activity demonstrate their perspectives on the case study through class discussion and group work
as they all share their perspective or opinions on the subject.

Do: During the case study reading, students will highlight the different passages that
illustrate an abusive relationship and will answer the 6 questions as to how they should
respond. Students should be able to respond appropriately and effectively in identifying
and responding to individuals in abusive circumstances. In modeling the appropriate
behaviour in class they should learn how to speak up during situations involving an
abusive or abused individual. Students will have the basic understanding for abusive
relationships to think and communicate clearly on the subject.

Material: Paper worksheet, highlighter, and pencil.

Procedures

2
FE2 ACTIVITY PLAN:
ELEMENTARY & SECONDARY

Step 1: Prior to the case study, ground rules concerning respect are established. Materials
for defining different types of abuse will also be instructed to students before the case
study. (10 minutes)

Step 2: The case study will be read together as a class with volunteer readers. Students
are instructed to highlight each illustration or example of abuse in the case study. (5
minutes)

Step 3: Students will be asked to share what signs of abuse they highlighted on their copy
of the case study. (5 minutes)

Step 4: The class will be broken up into groups of about 4-6 and will answer 6 questions
that concern the case study. Students will be expected to hand in a paper with all of their
names and answers to the questions by the end of the class. (10 minutes)

Step 5: After the 10 minutes of group work, the student teachers will randomly draw a
group number and the corresponding group must share their answer to one of their
questions in the case study with the class. Other groups will have a chance to share if they
would like to add or counter the first group who were drawn randomly. (10 minutes)

Formative assessments:

- Class discussion will assess student comprehension of the material, as well as their
previous knowledge about it (Assessment for learning).

Assessment - Written discussion sheet will assess student reflection on the questions for the case
study (Assessment for learning).

Other assessment types are not applicable.

Health & Well-being

This activity deals with the topic of relationship abuse, which is relevant to the students’ health and well being because it is a
situation that they might find themselves in some time in the future. The simulation will allow them to think about the steps
that they could take in order to get themselves out of such situations for their well being. Furthermore, it also allows them to
be sensitive to their peers’ situations, because the activity places them as friends to the couple. This will give them the
opportunity to help their peers conserve their health and well being should they need to do so.

Citizenship & Community life:

The activity is done in groups, meaning that the students have to manage many different opinions and points of view due to
the diverse nature of the student body in the school. Not only that, the fact that the activity is a simulation on how to handle
situations of relationship abuse as friends of the couple, it allows the students to think about the effects of being a bystander,
and will maybe encourage them not to let this kind of relationship dynamic slide if they were ever to encounter one.

Cross Curricular Competencies

☐ Uses Information ☐ Solves Problems ☐ Exercises critical ☐ Uses Creativity ☐ Adopts effective work
judgement methods

☐ Uses information & ☐ Achieves their potential ☐ Cooperates with others ☐ Communicates
communications technologies appropriately

Explanation:

Uses information:

Students need to use information that they have gained throughout the workshop and in their workshop packet in order to
answer the questions on the worksheet. Using the information that they have collected throughout the workshop in the
worksheet will allow students to develop their literacy skills, which then will prepare them for similar situations beyond the
classroom context.

Solves problems:

The activity is a situational simulation of a real-life problem that they have to solve. In finding a safe solution towards the
case study, students will be developing their skills in problem solving.

Exercises critical judgment:

The activity requires the students to think critically about the couple’s relationship so that they can give advice. This will
allow them to develop their critical thinking and communication skills, so that they can more productively contribute to their
community and environment.

Cooperates with others:

4
FE2 ACTIVITY PLAN:
ELEMENTARY & SECONDARY

The activity is done in a group, which will allow students to help and support each other during their learning. This promotes
the development of personal and social communication skills.

Communicates appropriately:

Students need to be able to use appropriate and sensitive language in order to communicate with their peers, and then again
during the class discussion. It is particularly important that students be considerate of the language they are using due to the
seriousness of the topic that they are dealing with. This will allow them to develop their social communication skills.
