Computer network

• A network is a set of nodes connected by communication links.


A node can be a computer, printer, or any other device capable
of sending or receiving data from or to the other node in the
network
• A computer network is a group of two or more computers
that are linked together.

What Do Networks Do?

• Computer networks are used to carry out a large number of


tasks through the sharing of information.
• Communicating using email, video, instant messaging and other
methods
• Sharing devices such as printers, scanners and photocopiers
• Sharing files
• Sharing software and operating programs on remote systems
• Allowing network users to easily access and maintain information

Types of Network

• There are many different types of network, which can be used


for different purposes and by different types of people and
organization.
• Local Area Networks (LAN): a network that connects computers within a
limited area. This might be in a school, an office or even a home.
• Wide Area Networks (WAN): a network that covers a larger geographical
area, usually with a radius of more than a kilometer.
• Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN): networks that stretch across a region
the size of a metropolitan area. A MAN is a series of connected LANs in a city,
which might also connect to a WAN.
• Enterprise Private Networks: is used by a company to connect its various
sites so that the different locations can share resources.

Internet

• The Internet (or internet) is the global system of interconnected


computer networks that uses the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to
communicate between networks and devices.
• It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic,
business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by
a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking
technologies
• The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and
services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and
applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail,
telephony, and file sharing.

Internet Terms
• Packet – data sent over the internet
• Protocol – Set of rules that allow devices to exchange information.
• Internet Protocol (IP) Address – Unique number that identifies a
device.
• IPv4: ###.##.###.###
• Limit 4,294,967,296 addresses
• IPv6: ####.####.####.####.####.####.####.####
• Hexadecimals are base 16 (0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 a b c d e f)
• Limit 3.4 x 1038 addresses
• Domain Name (Google - 74.125.200.139) – common name for a
Website so you don’t have to remember the IP address.
• Domain Name System (DNS) – throughout the internet. Translates
domain names to IP addresses.

• Intranet – within the


organization.
• Extranet – allowing
partners into your network
for specific things (eg.
Supply Chain Management)
• Internet

• Internet-based applications, services,


and data storage
• Services from the Cloud
• Platform as a Service (PaaS)
• Software as a Service (SaaS)
• Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

Cloud computing (cont.)

• Advantages:
• No software to install or upgrade
• If you have Internet access, you can always use it
• No restrictions on how much you store and don’t have to worry about
losing it
• Disadvantages:
• Your information is stored on someone else’s computer – how safe is
it?
• Internet access is required
• Relying on someone else to provide these services

Business Cloud Usage
• Cloud storage: These services store and back up your files for regular access. Files can
also be shared and synced across devices.
• Cloud backup: While cloud storage and cloud backup may seem synonymous, cloud
backup is designed to serve as a failsafe solution if your company experiences a server
crash, cyberattack or other data loss. [If you are looking for a cloud storage or backup

• Software as a service (SaaS): SaaS solutions use the web to provide a service. Examples
of SaaS application include Office 365, Google Apps, QuickBooks Online and Salesforce.
SaaS solutions may also be called platform as a service.
• Cloud hosting: These solutions facilitate multiple types of information sharing, such as
email services, application hosting, web-based phone systems and data storage.
