EFFICIENCY LAB: BOUNCING BALLS

PROBLEM: How efficient are different types of balls at converting energy when they are bounced?

HYPOTHESIS:

If the material balls are made determines efficiency, then the ________________ ball will be the most efficient at converting energy, because

___________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________________

MATERIALS:
● metre stick
● a selection of balls (record below)

PROCEDURE:

1. Select the first ball to be tested and record observations about size, texture, hardness etc.

2. Hold a metre stick perpendicular to the floor. (0 cm on the floor, 100 cm at the top).

3. Position yourselves so one group member is watching the metre stick, and one is holding a ball

level with the top of the metre stick.

4. Drop the ball while the group member observes the bounce back height.

5. Record your observations in the results table.

6. Repeat this step 2 more times in order to complete 3 trials.

7. Repeat steps 2-5 for the remaining balls.

RESULTS:

Type of Ball Observations of ball Starting Height (cm) Rebound Height 1 Rebound Rebound Average

(cm) Height 2 (cm) Height 3 (cm) Rebound

Height

100

100

100

100

ANALYSIS:

1. Calculate the average rebound height for each ball.

(Sum of the rebound heights Divided by the total number of trials).

Show your calculations in the analysis table below.

Average rebound height = rebound height 1 + rebound height 2 + rebound height 3

3 trials

2. Calculate the efficiency of each ball.

Divide the average rebound height (output energy) by the starting height (input energy), multiply
by 100 (to get a %).

Show your calculations in the analysis table below.

Ex: Efficiency = output energy X 100% = average rebound height X 100%

input energy starting height

Ball Average rebound height (cm) Efficiency (%)

CONCLUSION:

Different types of balls were _________________ from a height of ____________. The __________________ height was measured in order to calculate the ball’s ____________________ at

energy __________________. The ________________ ball had the greatest efficiency, and the ______________ ball had the least efficiency.

My hypothesis was _________________, because _________________________________________________
