Exploring Feminism (Part 2)

As a class we will be creating a working understanding and definition of what feminism is. It is extremely
important you trust the process and follow the steps provided. There are 5 different steps today, so make sure
you read through everything carefully before beginning.

Do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions or need clarification.

Within your group you will need someone who is (Every group member needs a job)
● The Scribe(s)
○ The person who will record all the information shared out by group members and decisions
created by the group
● The Creator(s)
○ The person or persons who will then take all the information from the discussion and create the
slide deck for the final presentation
● The Speaker(s)
○ This person or persons will be the ones responsible for presenting their final findings to the
class for their group.

STEP 1: Present Your Individual Findings

Use the following table to not only write down who is in your group, but also what they had to share about the
woman they researched and their impact within their time. Each member takes a turn in sharing out who they
researched and the details they found concerning what was happening historically at the time, and their impact
within feminism.
**Please note that if you have a group member who did not have information to share, in the
notes section simply write “no information to contribute”**

Group Member Name Researched Woman’s Name Main points/Notes

Vanessa Betty Friedan Wrote book, fought for women labor rights

Juliana Martha Griffoths First women to serve on the powerful house of

committee
Stephanie Kimberle Cernshaw Introduction and development of intersectionality

STEP 2: Compare & Contrast

Once everyone has shared their information, discuss the similarities seen within the actions and impact of each
woman. What was unique about each one? What did they all have in common? Make note of these findings in
the box alone.

● Kimberle and Betty both worked as professors

● Martha and Betty both fought for women's rights
● Kimberle and Martha both were
● All were civil rights advocates

STEP 3: Define & Support

After completing the first two steps, look at all the information gathered and shared. Consider the feminist
timeline, historcial actions and impact of the women you researched, and ask yourselves how woud you define
feminism?

As a group, write your definition for feminism based on all the information your group has gathered and
discussed. Once this is created, write a CER paragraph together supporting your choices.

Feminism Definition: Feminism is women coming together to fight for equality and justice.

CER Support: Feminism is women coming together to fight against inequality and oppression
towards women that has been occurring for centuries. For example in the 1930s
women rebelled against social structures ,claiming that women should be dressed
appropriately. They showed their feminim by exposing themselves a little more than
what was considered appropriate.

STEP 4: Present
Create a slide deck that includes the following. Your speaker(s) will present all the final information to the class
as a whole.
1. Title slide which includes the name of all members within the group
2. One slide per person researched within the group. Include an image and summary of the individual and
their impacts
3. A brief description as to what your group discussed and how you came to decide on a single definition
4. Provide the written out definition your group created for this
STEP 5: Submission
Select one group member who will submit this finished document AND the slide deck for the entire group on
Google Classroom.

This will be a group effort and a group grade. However, I will not only look at the overall submission of your
group, but also your individual contributions to the group as a whole. It is possible for each group member to
earn a different grade, but the base of the grade will be reliant on the final product created and presented by
the group.
