1. Introduction

This is a test description which will help the technician to sort out
components with high current consumption
locks with battery cassettes where the connection between battery
and battery cassette is poor
Information to site security personnel: In order to perform this test,
the technician needs access to the rooms, which includes
opening of the concerned doors (a valid staff card is required for the technician)
access to the concerned locks both from inside and outside

2. Test equipment

2.1 Parts
Equipment for readout of battery voltage and for lock configuration:
Service PC with Lock Service 3G, including correct system ID from the
installation site
Service cable 1)

Equipment for current consumption test:

black test cable modified RJ12 test cable where µA (microampere) range
green test cable the lock connector only has
modified RJ12 test cable eight contacts instead of ten.
(see marking of the cable The cable is not applicable
in Figure 2) for regular Lock Service 3G
test box with 3 x AA batteries usage and is marked 'Not for
lock service'.

1) Complete name of the cable is service cable RJ12 for 3G RFID LCU & E-cylinder

2.2 Setup
Before the current consumption test, make the below preparations:

1. Connect the modified RJ12 test cable to the socket in the test box.
2. Connect the black and green test cables to the test box.
3. Insert 3 AA batteries into the battery cassette on the test box.
4. Connect the other end of the black test cable and green test cable
respectively to the multimeter.
Note: Use the port marked µA/mA for the green cable, and the port
marked COM for the black cable.

5. Set the instrument selector on the multimeter to the mA (milliampere) position.

3. Procedure

If voltage is OK (IDLE voltage between

4.4 and 4.8V; LOAD voltage +/- 0.4V
Voltage readout: lower than IDLE voltage): perform
current consumption test
Use Lock Service 3G to make
a readout of battery voltage
(idle and load). See section If voltage is too low: exchange batteries
3.1 for details. and then perform current consumtion test

If difference between idle voltage and

load voltage is >0.5V: follow the steps
in section 3.2, then perform current
consumtion test

If current consumtion is
OK (i.e. less than 0.05 mA /
50 µA): replace the removed
Test OK
battery and disconnect the
Current consumption test: test equipment

See section 3.4 for details.

If current consumtion is not OK (i.e.
higher than 0.05 mA / 50 µA): troubleshoot
the high current consumption by performing
the steps in section 3.5

ASSA ABLOY Hospitality 6 66 1100 042-0

3.1 Readout of battery voltage
1. Connect the service cable from the service PC with Lock Service 3G to
the LCU (lock controller unit).
2. Choose Parameters in the left pane of the Lock Service 3G window and
click Readout.

Figure 6

3. Go to the Lock page of the parameter readout; note the values for IDLE and
LOAD voltage respectively.
4. Remove the service cable from the LCU.

3.2 To troubleshoot voltage deviation

If the readout from Lock Service 3G shows that the difference between IDLE
voltage and LOAD voltage is >0.5V, there is most likely a poor connection
between the batteries and the battery cassette. To verify if the battery
cassette is the problem, perform the below steps:
1. Roll/turn the batteries inside the battery cassette in the lock, without
removing them.
2. Present the staff card; the lock will open. Wait for the lock to close again.
3. Repeat step 2.
4. Connect the service cable from the service PC with Lock Service 3G to the LCU.
5. Perform a new parameter readout with Lock Service 3G; see details in section 3.1.
6. Check if the difference between the IDLE and LOAD voltage values has changed
to normal deviation (i.e. maximum 0.5V between the values). If the difference
between IDLE and LOAD voltage is now back to normal, there is most likely poor
connection between the batteries and the battery cassette.

3.3 To reset a battery low warning
If the battery LOAD voltage goes below 3.5V, the Lock Service 3G readout
of parameters will say 'Battery LOW' at the bottom of the Lock readout page
(instead of 'Battery is OK' as is shown in Figure 6).

For certain battery cassettes, the connection between batteries and battery cassette
is poor. This can cause a large difference between IDLE voltage and LOAD voltage
(see section 3.2 for details). The poor connection will also cause that the Lock
Service 3G readout of parameters still says 'Battery LOW' at the bottom of the
Lock readout page, even if the batteries have been exchanged and the LOAD
voltage is above 3.5V. The below is a work-around to reset this warning:

1. Connect Lock Service 3G to the lock.

2. Choose Configure lock in the left pane of the Lock Service 3G window.
3. In the drop-down-menu, choose '9V battery, 9V lock case'.
4. Click the Set button to the right of the drop-down-menu.
5. Remove the service cable from the lock.
6. Re-insert the service cable in the lock.
7. In the drop-down-menu, choose '4.5V battery, 4.5V lock case'.
8. Click the Set button to the right of the drop-down-menu.
9. Remove the service cable from the lock.
10. Present the staff card at the lock.
11. Make a parameter read-out according to section 3.1; the 'Battery LOW' warning is
now removed from the Lock readout page.

Figure 7

3.4 Current consumption test
1. Insert the connector from the current consumption tester in
the service connector of the LCU.
Note: A modified RJ12 test cable is used; see Figure 2.
2. Remove one battery cell from the battery cassette in the lock.
3. The actual current consumption is shown in the multimeter display.

Figure 8

Note: If the lock is a ZigBee online lock, the current consumption will not be stable
at all times. The ZigBee radio is communicating every 20 seconds, which results in
a peak in the measured current consumption.

ASSA ABLOY Hospitality 9 66 1100 042-0

3.5 To troubleshoot high current consumption
If the current consumption which was measured in section 3.4 is higher than 0.05 mA
(50 µA), perform the steps below:

Disconnect component Current consumption decreases less than 0,02mA (20µA):

by component and disconnect the next component according to the list;
check if the current when all are done, go to the step disconnect all components
consumption decreases.

1. Battery cassette Current consumption decreases more than 0,02mA (20µA):

2. Lock case try to reconnect the component and see if the current consumption
3. Zigbee radio (if installed) increases again
4. LCA (lock case adapter)
5. BLE module (if installed)

Increase smaller than Increase larger than 0,02mA

0,02mA (20µA) after (20µA) after reconnecting
reconnecting the the component: replace the
component: let the concerned component
component be

Current consumption lower than 0.05 mA (50 µA): LCU is OK

Disconnect all components,

but leave the current test
equipment connected.
Current consumption still higher than 0.05 mA (50 µA):
disconnect the test equipment from the LCU and wait for
the LCU to drain the power (takes 1 minute)

Current consumption still Current consumption lower

higher than 0.05 mA than 0.05 mA (50 µA) after
(50 µA) after reconnecting the LCU to the
reconnecting test equipment: connect the lock
the LCU to the test together again, and measure the
equipment: replace current consumption once more
the LCU

Lock is OK after re-assembling:

note the room number, follow up this
lock and report to local Tech Service.
