WORKING WITH MONEY

A . THE FINANCIAL ADVISOR

In my job people either come to me or I go to them. This is because most of my
clients are working full time and only have the evenings or weekends free. We
usually spend a few hours going through money matters and then I work out with
the client how best their money can be invested and how to plan for their
retirements. I give advice on anything from pension funds to taking equity out of
property. In short what I’m doing is advising people how to make their money
work for them and provide them with a secure future.

B . THE DEBT COUNSELLOR

The people who usually consult me are often desperate to find a way out of a very
difficult and traumatic situation. These days I’m seeing more and more people who
have overreached themselves and been tempted by easy credit. They can’t see a
way forward and that’s where I come in. My job often involves reassuring people
that there are ways out of their problems. However, in the course of my work I also
encounter people whose lives revolve around spending money that they haven’t got
and who are neither willing nor able to change their ways.

C . THE ACCOUNTANT
I work in partnership with two other people and we are always extremely busy! We
mainly deal with small businesses or individuals who need help with their taxes.
We calculate their profits (or losses) and advise on what expenses they can claim
for. Some forms they have to complete look quite complex but for people with our
experience they’re really quite straightforward. Some of our clients think we
should be able to save them enormous amounts of money but we’re certainly not
miracle workers!

D . THE ECONOMIST
In my opinion the economy is a fascinating subject and I try to pass this on to my
students. It’s such a wide subject. There are so many influences you have to
consider and a successful economist must be familiar with all the markets and
current trends. As we’ve seen recently with unstable stock markets world wide,
predicting how an economy is going to do is almost impossible because of all the
contributory factors. Friends often ask for advice on what shares to buy or sell but
unfortunately there are no guarantees in my business and it’s always a big risk!

Complete the sentences with the correct person A–D.

1. _______ is a teacher.

2. _______ thinks his subject is not straightforward.

3. _______ doesn’t work office hours.

4. _______ has some clients that do not take his advice.

5. _______ doesn’t always do what his clients expect.

PART 2: READING (3P)

Read the text. Too young to drive?

The recent government proposals to raise the age at which people can legally drive
in the UK have been met with a variety of reactions. Here is a selection from our
website.

A . Katy (15) from Barnet

In my opinion, it’s a disgraceful idea. It’s just another example of how young
people get the blame for everything these days. Raising the age won’t mean a
reduction in accidents. What needs to be done is to introduce more tests for older
drivers. In this country you take a test to start driving and then you’re free to carry
on driving until you die! It’s often elderly people who cause accidents because they
drive so slowly and get other drivers frustrated. Also, their reactions aren’t so
quick so they can’t cope with dangerous situations on the roads very well. At least
younger drivers are alert and react quickly.

B . Brad (22) from Essex

All things considered I think it may well be a very good idea to raise the driving
age. As far as I’m concerned, younger drivers are no worse than older drivers but
an extra year before they can drive will mean an extra year’s maturity, which can
only be a good thing. And of course, another year will mean not so many cars on
the roads which will surely benefit everyone.

C . Shirley (45) from London

My feeling is that it’s not necessarily a good idea to keep young people off the
roads for an extra year. I think it will only encourage more young people to drive
illegally. As we all know children are maturing earlier and earlier these days so
really, if anything the age for driving should come down not go up.

D . Matt (57) from Dorchester

This move is long overdue. Had it come into force earlier a significant number of
road accidents could have been avoided. Young people enjoy speed. It’s only
natural. But many accidents are caused by young people actually ‘racing’ each
other, not on a race track but on the roads! And it’s usually the youngsters who use
their mobiles while they’re driving and get easily distracted. I don’t want to imply
that young people today are irresponsible but in my opinion the age for driving
should be as high as possible until they learn to take driving seriously and consider
the consequences of what they do in a car. It can, after all, be a lethal weapon in
the wrong hands.

If you would like to add your comments, go on to our website. We’d love to know
how you feel!

Complete the sentences with the correct person A–D.

1._______ thinks that driving is often considered a sport.

2._______ thinks driving below the normal speed is a problem.

3._______ thinks a change may create another problem.

4._______ says that traffic congestion might be improved.

PART 3: WRITING (4p)
Write an opinion essay with the title: It is never possible for an individual to
influence change in society. Do you agree? Why / Why not? Use the writing guide
to help you.

Paragraph 1: Introduce the topic.

Paragraph 2: Outline your first argument.

Paragraph 3: Outline another argument.

Paragraph 4: Give some of the arguments against your point of view.

Paragraph 5: Summarise your opinions.

There is a title discussed recently that It is never possible for an individual to
influence change in society.
First, Society does not exist independently without individual. The individual lives
and acts within society but society is nothing, in spite of the combination of
individuals for cooperative effort. On the other hand, society exists to serve
individuals―not the other way around.
On the other hand, man is biologically and psychologically equipped to live in
groups, in society. Society has become an essential condition for human life to
arise and to continue. The relationship between individual and society is ultimately
one of the profound of all the problems of social philosophy. It is more
philosophical rather than sociological because it involves the question of values.
Man depends on society.
In conclusion, I do not think that individuals are incapable of bringing influences
and create changes among society. I personally believe that individuals, like
governments and organizations, are also part of society. Therefore, both
individuals and governments or organizations can do something to change society
in their own role.

BÀI KT1 TIẾNG ANH NÂNG CAO
You should write an essay about 200-250 words about the topic below .
Nowadays young people spend too much of their free time in shopping malls.
Some people fear that this may have negative effects on young people and the
society they live in.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Trả lời:
The young today spend a large amount of leisure time in shopping centers. It is
fear that this trend can bring about negative influences on the youths and the
society. Personally, I strongly disagree with this view.
On the one hand, for the young generation spending too much time at the shopping
malls can make them waste a great deal of money. As there are dozens of brands
with various prices and design for them to choose from, they are easily tempted to
buy things impulsively and misspend money on unnecessary stuff. For example,
when some big brand names slash the prices, a shopaholic may purchase 10 shirts
and jeans in a row and this cost her somewhere $100; however, such items often
end up being left in the wardrobe. For the society, because youngsters are unlikely
to participate in other activities such as their work or studying, economy may
suffer due to less work being done and the youths could slack off their knowledge
acquisition, making the national education standard drop significantly.
On the other hand, there are also some advantages of this trend. First, in terms of
the young, spending time at the malls is considered a method of relaxation. In
modern life these days, young people have to deal with lots of pressure from
school or workplace, so this trend helps them enjoy their life and effectively
release their stress. Second, the society also benefits from this phenomenon. The
increase in the amount of consumption will promote manufacture and commerce in
the fashion industry, which afterward will create more jobs and boost the economic
growth.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that devoting a huge amount of time in shopping
malls could lead to both negative and positive consequences to the young as well
as the society.

How do YOU use the net?
We asked members of one family to tell us what they use the Internet for and why.
Here is what they told us.

A. Grandad Peter
I might be over 80 but the Internet is invaluable to me. At my age it’s not always
so easy to get about and my friends and family are scattered all over the globe. It’s
difficult to visit and have face-to-face conversations that often. It’s a bit pricy too!
Phoning isn’t that convenient because of the different time zones. I don’t think my
brother in Australia would appreciate being woken up at three in the morning just
for me to say hello! So I keep in touch by e-mail and it’s very important to me. It
took me a while to get the hang of it but now it’s no problem at all.

B. Daughter Lynne
I must admit that I’m a spendaholic and I’m on auction sites all the time. I can’t
resist a bargain and I love the excitement of bidding against other people and never
being sure whether you’re going to win or not. It’s quite addictive so I have to be
careful or else I would be completely broke! I think it’s incredible that whatever
you’re looking to buy, someone out there has got it to sell.

C. Mum Karen
I find the net useful for downloading information for my students. You can also
access sites that give you free lesson plans and good, imaginative ideas for making
lessons interesting. There’s such a lot of knowledge out there too. To get the
answers to the kind of questions I have, it would take hours with piles of books and
I simply don’t have the time. For me the net is a lifeline!

D. Dad Oliver
My big thing is news and sports and I’m always online checking the latest scores. I
work shifts too, so I often miss the regular news slots and with the net I can always
watch news clips of programmes that were on earlier. It also brings you breaking
news and with the more controversial issues if you want to, you can read people’s
comments and of course, make your own. I do that quite often. And there are also
online newspapers. If I don’t get a paper, I can always go online and click on to the
newspapers website. It’s easier to choose what you want to read rather than leafing
through the papers which can be so big these days.

Which person (A–D) says …

1. I see the net as time saving? ___

2. I sometimes share my opinions with others? ___

3. I use it to get help with my work? ___

4. I don’t always get what I want? ___

5. it took time to work out how to use the net? ___

PART 3: WRITING (4P)
Write a for and against essay with the title: The growth of the air industry must be
restricted to control global warming. Use the writing guide to help you.
Paragraph 1: Describe the current situation.

Paragraph 2: Give points in favour of the statement.

Paragraph 3: Give points against.

Paragraph 4: Summarise and give your opinion.

The growth of the air industry must be restricted to control global warming.
Personally, I strongly agree with this view.
Flying is indeed bad for the planet because it contributes to global warming,
pollution, and leaves a huge carbon footprint. Airplanes run on kerosene fuel,
which when combusted, releases a large amount of carbon dioxide and other gases
into the atmosphere. Even though aviation is not a large industry, it has a large
impact on the climate system.
Climate aviation facts
- One return flight from Montreal to London emits as much carbon emissions as
heating a European home for an entire year.
- If the aviation sector were a nation, it would be among the top 10 global emitters.
It is responsible for 12 per cent of transportation emissions.
- The global tourism industry is responsible for eight per cent of global emissions
— more than the construction industry!
- Airline flying is going up five per cent a year but efficiency improvements have
only increased by one to two per cent.
- Airline emissions make up a little more than three per cent of total emissions in
Canada.
- The total carbon impact of a single flight is so high that avoiding just one trip can
be equivalent to going (gasoline) car-free for a year.
As it is currently difficult to reduce emissions from this sector, it is right to ask
whether we should all fly less as a means of reducing the sector’s soaring
emissions. Flying less could mean taking a more sustainable mode of transport,
such as train, or changing your destination to one which can be reached by less
climate-intensive means.

Whatever the means of achieving it, demand reduction should not be a taboo
subject. The sector’s emissions are soaring at a rate too high to ignore and policy-
makers should at the very least not recklessly champion endless aviation growth
while at the same time knowing how difficult it is to decarbonise the sector.

How far would you go?

Several science-fiction films and series have become so popular that they have
achieved cult status. Their influence continues to grow and followers and fans
remain steadfastly loyal to their imagined heroes. There are conventions, books,
magazines and websites all dedicated to these stars, their exploits and their lives.

One of the most influential TV sci-fi series of all time was Star Trek, an American
series which followed the adventures of the Starship Enterprise across galaxies for
many, many years. The characters of Captain Kirk, Doctor Spock and Engineer
Scottie, to name just a few members of the valiant crew, captured our
imaginations. Feature films brought the adventures to the big screen but even when
the series and films had finished and the ageing crew long retired loyal fans keep
the memories alive. There are regular Star Trek conventions all over the world
where fans meet to buy memorabilia, listen to talks and of course dress up as their
favourite aliens. And as with other cult shows, Star Trek also has its fair share of
eccentrics who take interest that one step further – into obsession.

One such person, Tony Adams, lives in Leicestershire, England and is so fond of
the series that he spent several years and many thousands of pounds decorating and
changing his flat into the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. It contains replicas of
all the machines and screens and even has a transporter room fitted with special
beams of light. The flat is perfect but it still functions as a living area. The owner
has ingeniously disguised essential appliances such as microwaves and sinks, and
normal entertainment equipment like TV, radio and DVD systems are carefully
hidden behind wall panels. The whole flat is bathed in an eerie blue light and you
can really imagine looking out of one of the porthole windows and seeing stars and
planets speeding past.

Perhaps the owner’s next step will be to learn Klingon, the language spoken by one
of the alien species that Kirk and friends encounter on their travels. In a quite
remarkable feat, a whole new language has been created and it is possible to attend
the Klingon Language Institute in Pennsylvania, founded by Lawrence M Schoen.
You can actually gain a qualification in Klingon. And when you have learned the
language you will be able to read Shakespeare’s Hamlet which has already been
translated!

For more interesting Star Trek obsessives, look on their website or even better, go
to one of their conventions. It will be quite an experience!

Choose the correct answers.

ART 3: WRITING (4P)
Write a short story. Imagine you were working on a space station on another
planet. You suddenly heard a terrible noise outside. What happened? Use the
writing guide to help you.

Paragraph 1: Set the scene and give background information.

Paragraphs 2 and 3: Describe the events.

Paragraph 4: Bring the story to an end.

It was about, 7 : 30 PM on the Earth and also the time when we got displaced from
Moon. I suddenly heard a terrible noise outside. Our spaceship has been hit by an
meteors.
Our path was directed in a wrong way. We landed on an other meteor, with our
space ship destroyed.
I had went into the space ship and searched for the communicator. So lucky for me,
I were able to find it.
We contacted with NASA and they would send an other rocket which will reach us
in 3 days. We thought of exploring this meteor. It was very small compared to the
moon. The gravitational pull on this meteor was very low, which meant, we were
able to jump very high. We jumped from one crater to other. We enjoyed a lot. We
found many fossils. It was actually weird, because according to study, there is no
living surroundings for any organism on meteors. In the mean time, our rocket
arrived and we went back on Earth and gave the fossil records to some of the
archaeologists and would be a mile stone in the field of science.

A new study says the speed and severity of climate change could cause major
damage to small African farms. These farmers are already struggling to deal with
the effects of climate change. The study was released at the African Green
Revolution Forum in Addis Ababa last month. It is called the 2014 African
Agriculture Status Report.

David Sarfo Ameyaw was a lead producer of the report. He is a director at AGRA,
the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa.

"Small-scale farmers are the backbone of African agriculture. About 70-percent of

the rural population in sub-Saharan Africa are small-scale farmers. They produce
about 80-percent of the food need in Africa," said Ameyaw.
