UNIT 1
MODULE: 1
Lesson 1-3
OVERVIEW: Have you been to the market today? What are the things they
sell? Yes, there are fishes, meat, vegetables, fruits, spices, and many
more. These things are made up of MATTER.
In this lesson, you will learn about the classifications of matter. You can
classify things around us that can absorb water, how useful things are that
can absorb water in our real-life situation, identify objects around us that
will float and sink, describe the kind of materials that float and sink,
describe materials around us that will undergo decay and classify them
based on the ability to decay.
Lesson 1
OBJECTIVES:
What’s In
PICTURES KO: I-DESCRIBE MO
Present the different pictures and tell if it is solid, liquid or gas
7. Towel 8. sponge
What’s New
Unlocking of difficult words:
Absorb – to take in, in a natural way
Porous – having small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through
Non-Porous – does not allow water to pass through
3
What is It
Aside from grouping the materials into solid, liquid, or gas, they can also
be grouped based on their ability to absorb water. Most of you have seen
someone washing dishes using a sponge. Why they use sponge instead of
other material? We will learn about it as we go along in this module.
In our surroundings, there are different classifications of materials and one
of which is according to its ability to absorb water or not, which is our first
topic.Absorbs means to take something in, such as water in a
natural way or gradual way. Repel means to move away. Water soaks
into many materials. These materials absorb water. They are called
porous. Porous materials are materials having small holes that allow
air or water to pass through. (as shown below)
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sponge
There are lots of materials that water will not soak in to. These materials
will repel water. These are non- porous materials like plastic and rubber
that do not allow water to pass through.

prevents you and other material in getting wet. Like for example, you use
plastic cover in your notebooks and books to protect from getting wet.
What’s More
If you spilt your drink, what sort of material you use to mop it up? A mop or
a broom?
Look at the pictures below, which of the two materials can absorb water?
Why?
What I Can Do
What can you say about the materials? How can you compare these
materials before and after adding water?________________________
1. You had a visitor in your house, you offered a sit. It happens that the
plastic chair is wet. You need to wipe it up before giving it to the visitor.
What would you use for wiping since there is no rag?________________
3. Rainy season is here. What should you wear in going outside so that you
will not get wet?_____________(any non-porous material is accepted)

Lesson 2
OBJECTIVES:
What’s In
Unlocking of difficulties:
Have you thrown a stick into a pond, or into a canal or into the sea or
bunch of toys into a basin with water? What happened to the stick or bunch
of toys tossed into the pond, canal, sea, or into the basin with water? Some
things float on top others sink into the bottom why does that happen?
What is It
Let us learn about things that float or sink and why they float or sink.
https://www.shutterstock.com/image-vector/opposite-words-float-sink-illustration-665039170
Everything is made up of tiny particles that we cannot see and how dense
the object is depends on the space between these particles.

The objects sinking or floating in water depends on the density of the object.
If the object has more density than water then it will sink in water. Density
is the state or quality of being dense; compactness; closely set or
crowded condition.
Water has also its own density. If something is denser than water it will
sink. Examples of such objects are - rock, marble, steel, iron, copper,
nickel, gallium, sand, beryllium, and mercury. On the other hand, objects
that have a lesser density than water then the object will float in water.
Examples of such objects are : ice, plastic, wood, oil, sponge, petrol,
kerosene, acetone, gases, polystyrene, and wax.
What’s More
Now, let us perform an activity. Prepare the following materials:
1. First, throw the stick slowly into the basin with water. Observe what
happens to the stick. Record your observation on the observation notes
below.
2. Next, toss the coin into the basin. Observe what happens to the coin.
3. Then, put the plastic spoon into the basin. Observe what happens to the
plastic spoon.
4. Lastly, place the metal spoon into the basin. Observe what happens to
the metal spoon. Just as shown in the illustration below.

What’s New
Unlocking of difficult words:
1. Decay- process of rotting or decomposition; rot or decompose
through the action of bacteria and fungi
2. Undergo- go through
3. Consumed- use up or eaten
4. Left-overs-remaining after the rest has been used
5. Non-biodegradable substances -are those that do not degrade easily
6. Biodegradable- materials that decay
16
7. Microorganisms-microscopic organisms especially bacteria, fungus, or
virus.
What is It
Look at the pictures. What happen to these fruits and vegetables? loaf of
bread?
https://romanodisposal.com/how-long-does-it-take-for-biodegradable-waste-to-disappear/ https://www.wellandgood.com/ate-moldy-bread-by-accident/
Yes, they were rotten. Some fruits and vegetables will decay if not
consumed. Decay means rot or decompose through the action of
bacteria and fungi. Not only fruits and vegetables will decay but also food
left-overs, banana peels, human waste, animal waste, leaves, grass,
remains of a dead animal, remains of a dead person, wood, etc. Materials
that decay are called biodegradable.
What’s More
Not all plants and animals decay at the same time. Some were compressed
underwater and thick layers of soil over millions of years. They were
converted into fossil fuels such as coal, oil or natural gas. These fuels are
used by power stations, factories, motor vehicles and others.
There are also some materials that will not decay. It is called non
biodegradable. Non-biodegradable substances are those that do not
degrade easily. Examples are: rubber, plastic, chemicals, paint.
17
biodegradable. It is usually seen that non-biodegradable substances are
synthesized and do not occur naturally, hence their degradation is also not
possible, but the biodegradable substances get easily decompose in nature
through agents like water, soil, sunlight, microorganisms, etc. and directly
or indirectly are profitable to the environment.
