4.5 LAST GASP

The modem has an option** to include the last gasp requirement stated as below:

a. The modem does not depend on its connected smart meter to provide additional power (for
a certain period) to send out the last message after power outage. Hence, the modem has its
own energy storage to allow the module to register to the network and to send out the
message using SMS.
• 4G : Max TX Power -> Up to 3 SMS
• 3G : Max TX Power -> Up to 3 SMS
b. The last gasp message is transmitted as a result of an unexpected power outage, not when
the smart meter performs a scheduled modem power cycle reset.
c. When a power outage occurs, an UDP encapsulated event packet is sent to the head end for
a persistent connection, or an SMS message if it is non-persistent.
d. To facilitate correct last gasp processing, the meter may manage the setup and control of
the modem’s controller and provide the required event identification details.
e. Last Gasp is implementable along with other SNMP parameters when more details are
available.

f. SMS Feature
• Supports for packet terminated SMS data connection wake-up (used for non-
persistent mode of operation). This applicable for operation in 2G mode only.

** Note:
• ECM400, by default, will not support Last Gasp (supercap)
• Last Gasp will be an option and supported upon request. (A new part number will be
assigned for Last Gasp option.)

4.6 INCOMING CALL SCREENING

Incoming Call Screening allows the modem to answer legitimate calls from “legitimate” phone
numbers maintained in the “white list” database. The SIM card must support Caller-ID. The
features include:

a. A “white list” can be configured to contain the phone numbers which are allowed to gain
access to the modem, for data (operative use) and for configuration/maintenance.
b. No reply to incoming calls without visible ID. (configurable)
c. Remote modem management by using AT commands

(This feature will not be supported in current release, but will be in the next release)

4.7 REBOOT
Modem is able to perform auto reboot with the following options configurable from the Modem
Programming Software and SNMP:

a. Auto Reboot is disabled

7.4 Resetting the ECM400

Resetting the ECM400 could be triggered by the AT command AT+CFUN=1,1, or it could be done
by simply unplugging and then re-plugging the power supply (DCIN) in the RJ45 connector.

8 TRANSPARENT MODE

The ECM400 could be configured as “transparent mode” wireless modem that easily allows users to
connect to a wireless network by plugging an RJ45 cable and an RF antenna (for external antenna
hardware configuration) which provides wireless network connectivity to EDMI’s series of meters.

In general, smart modems are factory configured with appropriate network-required settings. When
switched on, the modem automatically connects and transmits/receives data between meter and
head-end system transparently.

Following figure shows the typical deployment diagram for ECM400.

10 POWER CONSUMPTION

10.1 General
These consumption values were obtained by performing measurements on samples at a
temperature of 25°C with the assumption of a 50Ω RF output. Three DC inputs (DCIN) were used to
measure the consumption: DCIN_min(7V), DCIB_typ(12V) and DCIN_max(32V). Both the average
current and maximum current peaks were also measured. Note that power consumption
performance is also software related. The results listed below were based on firmware NEOWAY
N720-EA.
