Unit 1: Description of a person

Hi Nam,

Today is such a wonderful and lovely Sunday, isn’t it? I hope you’re doing well because I’m living my best
life here, in Ho Chi Minh City.

Turns out, moving away is not as bad as I thought. At first, I believed that life won’t be easy here, people
are not as friendly, kind as you. Ho Chi Minh City is a busy city, honestly. Things happens always too fast
and I was struggle to follow. It felt so weird, unfamiliar and I was afraid that I won’t fit. But that is when
Hoa showed up.

Hoa is my classmate in my Law class. She is an Asian girl with blonde dyed hair, warm chocolate brown
eyes, tan skin and she’s really tall, I don’t know her height but maybe like… 180cm? I’m not sure, I guess
I will ask her later when we meet at the cafeteria this afternoon for lunch. Oh, I forgot to mention but
you may become her bestie if you have a chance to meet her, she’s in love with spicy food just like you.

In out first coversation, I thought that she was a cold-hearted and prideful, bossy person because
something in her look made me have goosebump. But turned out, after thirty minutes of chatting, we
got along quite well, seriously, better than my expectation. Hoa is the funniest person I have ever met,
she tells many jokes about cat and they always get me. She is also really smart, don’t judge by her weird
fashion style, she is one of the most brilliant students in our university. She usually pratices boxing. But
we also have things in common: We all love cats and we really enjoy eating chicken nuggets. Although
she can be mean, forgetful sometimes, but she is a good person who is always cares about her friends
and family.

I’ll introduce you to Hoa next summer when we go on a vacation in Vung Tau, back to my hometown.

Cheers,

Ngoc

Unit 2: An Informal email

Hey there, Hoa.

How is your vacation in Japan? Let me guess, too fantastic? I hope you’re having a great time in Tokyo.
And don’t forget to visit Osaka, they have great castles there.

I’m writing this letter to inform you that I have received your gift. Well, I was really surprised, you got
me, mate. A small carton box from Japan was sent straight to my house. You know what? I was actually
having dinner with my parents, then I went back home and saw the delivery guy was leaving. I was glad
that I made it on time, the box had been sent right on my birthday! Did you do that intentionally? I hope
so, you always know how to surprise me when we were still studying at the same high school. Do you
still remember that day when you wearing a dinosaur just to surprise Ly but then you freaked Mrs. Thu
out? It was hilarious, even The Principal had a good laugh before Mrs.Thu got angry and started scolding
you for the inappropriate clothes. Who knows that dinosaur costumes are inappropriate?

Back to the gift. I was pretty curious about what would you buy for me in Japan. I was looking for a
sakura candy box or anything that related to the sakura flower, it’s just like a symbol of Japan and easy
to find in gift shops, isn’t it? But after unboxing it, I was too shocked to speak: It was a Nintendo Switch
with an Animal Crossing game in it. It was way too expensive for a birthday present, but that’s the best
gift I’ve ever received. Thank you so much, Nam! I appreciate it. You know me too well.

And I really like the sakura sticker collections that you also bought for me. It’s cute. I’ll stick them on my
laptop, pink really goes well with black.

But seriously, thank you. Not just for this gift but also for being my friend.

I’ll see you back in September when you return to Vietnam.

Love ya!

Your lovely adorable bestie Hoa

P/s: Go buy something from the vending machine, I heard that you can actually buy a hamburger from
it!
