Describing people
Describe a person from your past and why you would like to see again, and explain why.

Anna is a 25-years-old young lady with whom I met a few years ago when I got my first job. The first
few weeks after I got hired we wouldn’t talk too much, but later on I got to actually know her.

Anna was dark-haired and she was not very tall. She would always wear modest clothing and little to
no makeup. She was a natural beauty, I can say. She was also very friendly and hardworking. She was so
kind with me and patiently helped me whenever I needed. We became closer when, one day after
finishing work we went home together. I had a rough day at work as one of the customers made a scene
and screamed at me so I was not in the mood to socialize, but I didn’t want to seem rude so I accepted
to go home with Anna. As we were walking she reached for something in her backpack. She offered me
a chocolate cupcake telling me that she knew it was a rough day and that cupcakes make everything
better. My heart melted at this small gesture. Now I knew that this girl is special and that I am lucky to
have a friend like her at work.

After that day we started hanging out together more often and we realized we had so many hobbies
in common. We were now regularly riding our bikes together or meeting at one’s house to cook
delicious treats. Her biggest passion was drawing. She was very talented and whenever she would have
free time she would draw different characters and portraits. She even applied to a competition for a job
as an animator and she won. We were getting along so well, but now that she had to move out from the
city to pursue her dream, we had to say goodbye. Since then we didn’t keep in touch anymore, but I
would love to meet her again someday.
2. Describing places/buildings
Describe a well-known landmark in your country and explain why it is famous.

The Transfăgărășan highway is one of the most famous attractions in my country. The highway is
situated in the mountainous region located in Romania and is famous for the breathtaking landscape
you can enjoy from the comfort of your car.

The first thing you will notice is that the road is mostly composed of curves. It is as spectacular as it
looks in the pictures and is perfect for people with an adventurous side. If you are an eager to do this
trip at sunrise you might experience difficulty driving, due to the fog, but if you get past this
inconvenience I can promise you will not regret taking the risk as you will feel like driving through the
clouds.

If you are visiting this place in the summer you will most definitely see some locals on the road selling
delicious berries collected right from the heart of the mountain forests. You will also be delighted with
the stalls selling traditional wooden objects and souvenirs.

On top of the mountain you will be able to enjoy the view of Bâlea Lake and can also try the
traditional Romanian dishes at the majestic cottage situated right beside the lake. If you are passionate
about hiking you should know that from the Bâlea Lake starts the rail to the top of the highest peak in
Romania, The Moldoveanu Peak. It is a long trip to the top, but if you dare to go you will get to enjoy
one of the most memorable trips. The rail is not very dangerous so it is suitable for beginners and you
will get to see the wild natural beauty of the country. We recommend you to do this trip in two days.
You can spend the night at the quaint cottage located close to the top of the mountain or if you prefer
to have an authentic experience you can bring your own tent with you.

If you are passionate about adventure and love spending vacation in the mountains, try The
Transfăgărășan highway – you will not regret it.
3. Describing objects
Describe your favourite childhood toy and explain why you liked it so much.

My favourite childhood toy was a doll which I have received from my childhood best friend. The
doll itself is not very special or unique but it has emotional value.

When I was little I did not have many dolls with which I loved to play with, but my best friend back
then had a lot of them and we would always meet after school to play together. There was one
particular doll I really liked. It had the size of a book and it had long blonde hair. It was wearing a nice
floral skirt and pink shoes. The blouse was also a bright pink and the bag she was having was a nice
shadow of blue. It was a pretty doll and I would always borrow it from my friend to play with.

One day, when we were playing, my friend told me that she wants me to have that doll. I could not
believe my ears. My friend cared so much about me that she gifted me the most beautiful doll I had ever
seen. She also gave me another dress for the doll which had the color of sun decorated with white lace.
It was one of the happiest days of my life. I named the doll after her and I played with it every day ever
since trying to sew new clothes for it or making her hair. That doll meant so much to me that I could not
give it away when I grew up and I still keep it in a box at my home. I am not playing with it anymore, but
when I want to go back in time I take out the doll and remember all the good days of my childhood.

That doll played an important role in my life as it thought me that true friends will always look out for
your happiness and that the most precious memories can come in the most unexpected shapes and
sizes.
4. Describing festivals/events/ceremonies
Describe a festival you have attended and explain its popularity.

The Heartbeat festival is one of the best festivals I have ever been to. It took place last summer in
England and it became so popular among the youth that the organizers are planning to hold the event
every year.

I went to the festival with my sister and when the day finally came up, we woke up excited and ready
to take on the event. When we arrived at the place where the event took place we saw a lot of people
waiting in line. We waited for about two hours before our turn came but they felt like ten minutes as the
stuff put some music for the participants waiting in line to feel better.

The opening singer was a debutant. It was his first appearance at a concert and I must say I was
impressed by his confidence and good vocals. After him. The organizers took us by surprise with a
special guest they did not promote. It was a well-known youtube creator with millions of fans who held
a motivational speech about believing in your vision. The rest of the first day the program followed the
schedule.

What I was impressed about was the options of food given. The organizers had the brilliant idea of
surprising us with street food courts from each country the participants were coming from. This is
actually the reason it got popular. The heartbeat festival wanted to concentrate on embracing the
differences between us and bringing us together through little things, like food, for example.

At the end of the day it felt like walking out of a dream. I got to listen to a few of my favourite
singers, I got to eat foods I have never eaten before and I even made a few foreign friends with whom I
still keep in touch. I did not expect to like it so much, but I will surely return next year.
5. Narratives
Write a story entitled “The Locked Door”

“The Locked Door”

When Jane was little she would always wonder what was hiding behind the locked door in her
grandparents’ house. She would weekly visit them and every time she tried to open the mysterious
door, but she never found the key to unlock it. One day, when her curiosity was on peak she got the
courage to ask her grandfather if he could show her the secret hiding behind the door, but her
grandfather refused to show her the room. He promised that when she is old enough he will give her the
key, but now the time wasn’t right.

A few years passed and Jane eventually forgot about the locked door. She was now 18 years-old and
excited move to the big city for her new student life. The night before leaving, Jane’s grandmother called
her. The conversation went as usual, but Jane still felt like the voice tone of her grandmother sounded
excited.

The next morning Jane made a quick stop to her grandparents’ house before leaving. They hugged
her and invited her in. Meanwhile her grandmother was preparing some tea, her grandfather told Jane
that there is something she needs to see. He led her to the second floor and stopped in front of a closed
door. In that moment it hit her. That was the locked door she tried so hard to open. Her grandfather
smiled, “I told you that when the time is right I will show you what hides in this room”. Excited, Jane
took the key which her grandfather gave her and unlocked the door. The room was small and it looked
more like a storage room than a mystery. Her grandfather gave her a wooden box “Do you remember
the key-shaped necklace we gifted you for your 16th birthday? That is the key which opens this box. This
is a gift from me”. Jane was wearing the necklace that day, so she took out the key and opened the box
“What is this, grandfather?” “That journal which belonged to me in my college days. I want you to take it
with you and turn to it for advice when I am not around. You are moving very far from home, but it
doesn’t mean I can’t be with you.” Jane hugged her grandfather crying.

It was a hard goodbye, but it was not really a goodbye as long as she had her grandfather’ advice with
her.
