    In the late 18th century, India's cotton textile industry grew significantly as colonial ports became important trading hubs. However, the industry was disrupted when the US cut off India's cotton supplies and began exporting finished cotton goods to India instead of raw cotton. This forced Indian weavers to buy more expensive raw cotton and unable to pay, their livelihoods were threatened. In the 19th century, factories in India began producing machine-made textiles, providing another solution to the problem faced by weavers.
