need money to be one. I got
hired at Jimmy John’s as a de-

made some decent money there.
I got an hourly wage, hella
tips and mileage reimburse-

driving around Midvale, lis-
tening to music, books, pod-
casts and npr radio. As much
as this was a decent time in
my life, I gained the habit of
vaping/ smoking. I was in my

HORROR & THRILLERS
I had bought the movie, The Thing, for a friend but he already owned it. I had held on to it but
hadn’t watched it yet. I’ve never loved horror movies, but decided to give it a try. I thought the
movie was great. I loved the alien design, Kurt Russell’s one liners and the suspense the John
Carpenter builds in the movie.

This made me more interested in horror movies. I began watching some of the classics; Hal-
loween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Exorcist. I also rewatched The
Shining, which had been the only horror film I would watch ever since I was in high school,
which is also one of my favorites.

JAPANESE 日本映画
C
I
It’s now winter of 2020, I’ve been doing my
weekly applications for my unemployment and
watching movies. I’ve hit almost 1,000 for
N
E
the year. I’ve purchased several criterions
and blu rays. I’ve become infatuated with
Akira Kurosawa. Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Throne
of Blood, Ran, Kagemusha and so on. I’ve
become obsessed with samurais. I also get
into the works of other Japanese directors.
Kobayashi (Harakiri, Kwaidan), Ozu (Tokyo
Story, Good Morning), Gosha (Three Outlaw
Samurai, Goyokin), Mizoguchi (Life of Oharu,
M
Ugetsu), Okamoto (Sword of Doom, Kill!) and
Inagaki (Samurai Trilogy, Samurai Banners).

I watch movies for several reasons. 1. Entertainment 2. The tech-
nical aspects and 3. Color. Kurosawa is a master. He is an in-
novative storyteller, master of character development and cine-
matography and a master painter with all colors. I enjoy Ozu’s
filmography due to their humanistic and relatable themes, unique
cinematic techniques, his mastery of a distinctive style, their
timeless quality, social commentary and ensemble casts. Kurosawa
and Ozu are two of my favorite directors of all time. Kobayashi,
Gosha, Mizoguchi, Okamoto and Inagaki are all fantastic as well,
and I still have to deep dive into all of their films.

At this point I had filled up
what space I had left in a

STU D IO GHIBLI
I had seen Ponyo as a kid, but hadn’t seen any of Ghibli’s
other movies. Seeing Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Prin-
cess Mononoke and Ponyo (again) made me realize how much
I missed drawing and painting. I ordered a new sketchbook,
pencils and pens and started drawing again. The only thing
I wish I had that Hayao Miyazaki had was his imagination. I
eventually filled 4 sketchbooks. It’s fun to go back and look
through, seeing what movie I had watched or what band I was
listening to (usually Metallica or Blood Incantation).

My favorite from Studio Ghibli is usually between My Neigh-

bor Totoro or Princess Mononoke. But I also love Spirited
Away, Ponyo, Porco Rosso, Grave of Fireflies, Nausucaӓ: Valley

ABOUT THE
BACK TO CLASS
Now I go to school full time and will AUTHOR
graduate from SLCC in May 2024 after
eight years of being a student at Salt
Lake Community College, all thanks to
movies and television.

A big reason I’ve stuck with the pro-

gram is due to David Lynch. He’s so
creative and unexplainable. I wanted to
make art like David Lynch and not give
a fuck what anyone thinks of it.

Brandon Margetts was raised in

has been an on and off again

with an AAS Visual Arts: Multi-

Brandon is an avid film buff,

enjoys reading, collecting vi-

video games and going camping/
traveling. Also enjoys spending
