value, rms value, form and peak factors. Voltage and current relationship, with phasor diagram, in R,
L and C circuits.
Module - 2
Single phase circuits (continued): Analysis of R-L, R-C, R-L-C Series and Parallel circuits, Real
power, reactive power, apparent power and Power factor. Measurement of power.
Three-phase circuits: Generation of three phase power, representation of balanced star (3 wire and
4 wire system) and delta connected loads, phase and line relations of voltages and currents from
phasor diagrams, advantages of three-phase systems. Measurement of three phase power by two
wattmeter method, simple problems.
Module - 3
Transformers: Necessity of transformer, principle of operation, construction of single phase core
and shell type, emf equation, losses and efficiency.
Three phase induction Motors: Concept of rotating magnetic field, Principle of operation,
constructional features of motor, types – squirrel cage and wound rotor, slip and problems on slip,
torque-slip characteristic, significance of slip.
Three phase synchronous generators: Principle of operation, constructional details of salient and
non-salient pole generators, frequency of operation, emf equation of concentrated winding (i.e.,
without considering the distribution and pitch factors), simple problems.
Module - 4
Electrical Power Generation: Sources of energy – renewable and non-renewable, working principle
of hydel, thermal, nuclear, wind and solar power plants through block diagrams, environmental
effects, and advantages and disadvantages.
Power transmission and distribution: Concept of HVAC transmission and HVDC transmission.
Low voltage distribution system (400 V and 230 V) for domestic, commercial and small scale industry
through block diagrams only.
Electric Wiring Schemes: Casing and cap wiring, Open conduit and closed conduit systems.
Advantages and disadvantages. Types of wires used for lighting and heating (power) circuits.
Electricity bill: Power rating of household appliances including air conditioners, PCs, laptop, printer
etc. Definition of “unit” used for consumption of electrical energy, two - part electricity tariff,
calculation of electricity bill.
Module - 5
Equipment Safety measures: Working principle of Fuse and Miniature circuit breaker (MCB,)
merits and demerits.
Personal safety measures: Electric Shock, Safety Precautions, Earthing and its types and Earth
leakage circuit breaker (ELCB).
Batteries used in electric and hybrid cars: Basics of lead acid batteries, nickel - iron batteries,
lithium – ion batteries, advantages and disadvantages of batteries, rating of batteries in ampere - hour.
Standby power supplies: DG set, uninterrupted power supplies (explanation only with block
diagrams).
Course outcomes:
At the end of the course the student will be able to
CO1: Analyse basic dc and ac electric circuits.
CO2: Explain the working principles of transformers and electrical machines.
CO3: Understand the concepts of electric power generation, transmission, and distribution of power.
CO4: Understand the wiring methods, electricity billing, and working principles of circuit protective devices
and personal safety measures.
CO5: Understand how the vehicle batteries work and the recent trends.
Pedagogy and Continuous Internal Evaluation (CIE)
Teachers shall adopt suitable pedagogy for effective Teaching – Learning process. The pedagogy shall involve
the combination of (i) Direct Instruction (Low Tech), (ii) Flipped Classrooms (High Tech), (iii) Blended
learning (high Tech) (iv) Kinesthetic Learning (Low Tech), (v) Differentiated Instruction (Low Tech), (vi)
Inquiry-based Learning (High Tech), (vii) Expeditionary Learning (High Tech),(viii) Personalized Learning
(High Tech), (ix) problem - based Learning (High Tech).
(a) The CIE marks for theory part of I year courses shall be 50. Thirty (30) marks shall be considered to evaluate
students in tests. There shall be three tests generally conducted at the end of fifth, tenth and fifteenth week of
each semester. Each test shall be conducted for a maximum of 50 marks and the final test marks shall be the
average of three tests, proportionately reduced to a maximum of 30 marks.
(b) Ten (10) marks shall be prescribed for assignments /written quizzes (one scheduled quiz and one surprize
quiz). There shall be at least two assignments and two quizzes. The marks earned in these events shall be
averaged to reduce to 10 marks.
(c) Ten (10) marks shall be prescribed for open book tests, for self-study or to test problem solving skills. There
shall be at least two events. The marks earned in these events shall be averaged to reduce to 10 marks.
(d) The total CIE marks shall be the sum of marks secured by students under (a), (b) and (c).
For the conduct of events under (b) and (c) [except surprize quiz], the concerned Teacher shall schedule the
events in consultation with the students and utilise the periods prescribed under Tutorial.
Question paper pattern:
(i) The question paper will have ten full questions carrying equal marks.
(ii) Each full question will be for 20 marks.
(iii)There will be two full questions from each module.
(iv) Each full question will have sub- questions (subject to a maximum of four sub- questions) covering both
the modules.
(v) The students have to answer five full questions, selecting one full question from each module.
