The Institute of Medicine, a medical school staffed by some of the most notable names in Philippine
medicine, was established in 1952. The lofty expectations that were created at the time have been
spectacularly met by the top-rated graduates since then.

In reality, the Institute of Medicine was planned as early as FEU’s establishment in 1934. Dr. Nicanor
Reyes, Sr., FEU’s founder and first president, envisioned an Institute of Medicine to complement his
vision of transforming FEU, already a leader in progressive non-sectarian education, into a school
dedicated to assisting in nation-building in as many ways as possible.

Established in 1960, the School of Medical Technology was the first of its kind in the country. It has
molded medical technologists with intensive and updated training provided by the most seasoned
practitioners, and enhanced with the most modern laboratory equipment and resources. The CEU
School of Medical Technology trains students in the performance of laboratory test procedures and
analyses used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of disease and the maintenance of health. The
program focuses on the use of modern equipment and the performance of scientific techniques in the
administration of the full spectrum of Medical Technology services required in modern health care. At
the end of a four year course, students demonstrate competencies in scientific research, methods and
processes, having acquired skills in instrumentation, laboratory diagnosis, methodology and life saving
procedures. They manifest as well wholesome values and attitudes which enable them to be able to
contribute to the overall social, mental, physical, health, and environmental concerns of the community,

Carlo Gualberto Espina is a RMT, MBA, MPA. He is the founding president, pioneer clinical laboratory &
medical clinic, Inc.

According to him “he always wanted to be a doctor but his father wanted him to be an engineer. After
he passed the PEPT from 1st year High School-1st year college, it helped him pursue the path.” Bs Medical
Technology is the best preparatory course for medicine. It’s quite a fact that from an engineering
university where he spent a year to honor his father’s wish, he decided to transfer to LPU and he chose
to be a game changer. He was able to explore and test the flexibility of his boundaries. If he didn’t
become a Lycean and a RMT he would’ve missed the golden opportunity of connecting the dots of his
passion, from expectations to reality.
