This was a fun and challenging model to design, particularly since my approach focused on simplicity, on the animal’s posture, attitude, and essential character rather than technical complexity. The design came together quickly as my initial idea turned out to be a good one. The model also has the virtue of standing well on four legs without wanting to tip forward or buckle, since the legs are developed from points in the middle of the paper. @ Recommended paper: 1572” square or larger. © Begin with a square, white side up. 40 Origami Animal Sculpture / TO™ / Xe Valley fold and unfold on the 2. Lizard There are thousands of varieties of lizard all over the world. Most share a fascinating quality of cold, patient reptilian stillness combined with moments of incredible quickness. I’ve sought to capture this attitude in my Lizard. The model features a detailed head and claws, and a posable body stance with a bendable neck and tail. This model was the origin of my Hex Base, which inscribes a regular hexagon into a square. The hexagon forms the body, with the six points making the head, tail, and legs. The remaining wedges of paper between the hexagon and the corners of the square sheet are used to form the claws. This has proved a very versatile base for any animal with four clawed legs. I have adapted it to a number of subjects of remarkably different forms. Recommended paper: 10” square or larger. This model works well from a variety of paper, including regular origami paper. | tend to favor larger, slightly thicker papers.
