Home-Start in Slough is an empowering, visionary family support service built on trusted relationships and
rooted in the community. We exist to improve outcomes for families inSlough. Over the past 20 years we
have supported over 3500 disadvantaged and deprived children in their homes on a weekly 1:1 basis or at
our group utilising our trained and supervised volunteer workforce. Through early intervention and
preventative measures we have improved the life chances of the families, prevented family breakdown and
reduced impact on social care.

· How will you spend this grant to address the need arising from the impact of the Coronavirus
pandemic?

We operate three pillars of support: home visiting, groups and courses with a focus around early
intervention and preventative work. Based on the present Coronavirus crisis, we have adapted our
service to a remote service model, and we have a critical need to expand our service and our
interventions as rapidly as possible to deal with the immediate and long-term increased need.
We have a particular concern regarding families and individuals who feel isolated due to the constantly
changing restrictions issued at a local and national level. The pandemic has confined families and
parents to support bubbles and there is a lack of certainty as to what the rules may be in the near
future, preventing social plans from being made. We are concerned that this has impacted the mental
health of families and parents. Mental health services have seen higher levels of referrals compared to
2019 and have responded to anticipated surges in demand for services by opening enhanced duty
services in some NHS trusts.

In addition, we need to convert our courses and group materials to enable us to deliver them remotely as
well as invest in technology and training for our staff and volunteers to enable this to happen.

A grant would enable us to engage a Family Support Co-ordinator to perform this work, and convert and
deliver our materials remotely. The increased capacity would also enable us to continue our expanded
service post lockdown based on anticipated increased need.

· What positive changes would this grant make to the lives of people who use your project/service?

We will utilise MESH (Monitoring and Evaluation System in Home-Start) to collect and analyse information
to monitor and evaluate our service and outcomes. MESH is a user and family friendly bespoke system
developed in partnership with the Charities Evaluation Services. It enables monitoring, evaluation and
ability to measure the journey of change against 14 criteria around parenting skills, parental wellbeing,
child well-being and household management. Throughout the support we will re-score the beneficiaries
scoping score and chart the journey of change providing a focus for the volunteer and family to ensure
needs are being met. This also enables us to assess when we need help from a partner organisation.
Typically over 90% of the families report a reduction in feeling isolated, an improvement in managing
child's behaviour, improvement in mental wellbeing and better able to cope with household
management
