(25) Explain the phenomenon of reflection of waves by considering a wave pulse travelling along a
string, whose one end is (i) fixed to a rigid support and (ii) tied to a ring which can freely slide up
and down a vertical rod. What are the phase changes in each case?
(26) A steel wire 0.72 m long has a mass of 5.0  10–3 kg. If the wire is under a tension of 60 N, what is
the speed of transverse waves on the wire?
(27) Derive expressions for the kinetic and potential energies of a simple harmonic oscillator. Hence
show that the total energy is conserved in S.H.M. In which positions of the oscillator, is the energy
wholly kinetic or wholly potential?
(28) What is meant by the mean free path of a gas molecules? Derive an expression for it. On which

(36) The moon is observed from two diametrically opposite points A and B on Earth. The angle 

 Answer the following questions. (3 marks)[Any 6] [18]
(37) A wave travelling along a string is described by,
y(x, t) = 0.005 sin (80.0 x – 3.0 t), in which the numerical constants are in SI units (0.005 m, 80.0 rad
m–1, and 3.0 rad s–1). Calculate (a) the amplitude, (b) the wavelength, and (c) the period and
frequency of the wave. Also, calculate the displacement y of the wave at a distance x = 30.0 cm and
time t = 20 s? (sin(1.699)  1)
(38) A 5 kg collar is attached to a spring of spring constant 500 N m–1. It slides without friction over a
horizontal rod. The collar is displaced from its equilibrium position by 10.0 cm and released.

(a) the period of oscillation, (b) the maximum speed and (c) maximum acceleration of the collar.
(39) A pan filled with hot food cools from 94 ºC to 86 ºC in 2 minutes when the room temperature is at
20 ºC. How long will it take to cool from 71 ºC to 69 ºC?
(40) In a car lift compressed air exerts a force F1 on a small piston having a radius of 5.0 cm. This
pressure is transmitted to a second piston of radius 15 cm (Fig 10.7).
If the mass of the car to be lifted is 1350 kg, calculate F1. What is the pressure necessary to
accomplish this task? (g = 9.8 ms–2).
(41) A 400 kg satellite is in a circular orbit of radius 2RE about the Earth. How much energy is required to
transfer it to a circular orbit of radius 4RE? What are the changes in the kinetic and potential
energies?

 Answer the following questions. (5 marks)[Any 4] [20]
(46) A metal bar 70 cm long and 4.00 kg in mass supported on two knife–edges placed 10 cm from each
end. A 6.00 kg load is suspended at 30 cm from one end. Find the reactions at the knifeedges.
(Assume the bar to be of uniform cross section and homogeneous.)
(47) A cricket ball is thrown at a speed of 28 m s–1 in a direction 30º above the horizontal. Calculate (a)
the maximum height. (b) the time taken by the ball to return to the same level, and (c) the distance
from the thrower to the point where the ball returns to the same level.
(48) (A) Derive an expression for the apparent frequency of sound as heard by a stationary observer
in a still medium, when the source is moving towards the observer with a uniform velocity.
Hence write the expression for the apparent frequency when the source moves away from
the stationary observer.
(B) Derive an expression for the apparent frequency of the sound, when the observer moves
towards a stationary source of sound. Hence write the expression for the apparent
frequency when the observer moves away from the stationary source.
(49) Show that for small oscillations the motion of a simple pendulum is simple harmonic. Derive an
expression for its time period. Does it depend on the mass of the bob?
(50) State and prove Bernoulli's principle for the flow of non–viscous fluids. Give its limitations.
Apply Bernoulli's principle to determine the speed of efflux from the side of a container both when
its top is closed and open. Hence derive Torricelli's law.
(51) Describe the operation of a Carnot's engine. Calculate the efficiency of a Carnot's engine and
explain why the efficiency of an irreversible engine is small.
