Assignment # 1

Give the relevance or example of each sustainable development goal to the maternal and
child.

SDG 1: End Extreme Poverty in All Forms

Poverty is about not having enough to meet basic needs. For poor people especially, health is
also a crucially important economic asset. Their livelihoods depend on it. A mother who is pregnant
needs to meet her basic needs like taking a vitamins, proper and regular check-up, and eating a
nutritious diet. If the mother did not meet those needs she cannot reduce the risk of having birth
defects and unpleasant pregnancy symptoms.

For example, a pregnant mother does not have enough money or time to get regular prenatal
care and prenatal vitamins. She cannot do moderate activity or at least go the nearest health center
because her priority is to get a money to buy some food. Eventually, right after delivering the baby they
discovered complications and defects and also that is why we nurses should encourage pregnant woman
to have a health maintenance wherein they should seek or to have regular prenatal care. Seeing a health
care provider regularly during pregnancy is the best way to monitor the health of mom and baby to
catch potential complications early.

SDG 2: End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable
Agriculture

Hunger has fallen by almost half. Many countries that once suffered from starvation and poverty
will now satisfy their most vulnerable people's nutritional needs. Having a secured and improved
nutritious food is a highly beneficial for most pregnant woman because what you eat during pregnancy
affects your energy and well-being. And also it also directly affects the health and development of the
baby. Since calorie and nutrient needs are increased, it is very important that you choose nutrient-dense
and health foods.

Imagine, for example, a world where everyone has no access to adequate and nutritious food. A
pregnant women and a baby will most likely to suffer and defects will develop. Food is the main source
of nutrition for the baby during birth. Experts therefore suggest that the future mother should select a
variety of nutritious foods to provide a baby with essential nutrients for good development and growth.

Now we will go ahead and bring an end to poverty and starvation once and for all. This includes
helping small farmers and encouraging sustainable farming.

SDG 3: Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being for All at All Ages

We all know how important it is to be in good health. This goal allow us to make sure everyone
has health coverage and access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines.

For example, having an access to safe and effective medications allows pregnant woman to
prevent direct causes of maternal mortality such as prolonged or obstructed labor, infection, sever
bleeding, high blood pressure, unsafe abortion, and complications caused by AIDS or malaria infection
during pregnancy. Having this kind of goal can prevent child deaths and maternal mortality.
SDG 4: Ensure Inclusive and Equitable Quality Education and Promote Lifelong Learning Opportunities
for All

I think that the most prevalent causes of maternal mortality worldwide are hemorrhaging,
malnutrition, and infection. We can prevent this by education.

For instance, a woman who have an access to quality education can know how to earn a better
living. She can determine what foods are the most nutritious, what birth practices are held up by
evidence, which should be avoided, how to have the safest birth possible. A better education allows
them to earn a wage so that they can afford to live a healthy lifestyle and hire a knowledgeable nurse or
midwife.

SDG 5: Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls

Women and girls lag behind nearly everything. This goal allows woman worldwide to get a
proper job and even have their salary rise. There are still gross inequalities in work and wages, lots of
unpaid “women’s work” such as child care and domestic work, and discrimination in public decision-
making. If this kind of discrimination will not be resolved, a lot of independent woman will be line up in
poverty.

For instance, a newly pregnant woman cannot get a job because of her situation and gender.
This situation prevents her from earning money and buy essentials especially going to health provider
for regular prenatal care. This goal ensure that there is an end to discrimination against women and girl
everywhere.

SDG 6: Ensure Availability and Sustainable Management of Water and Sanitation for All

No one is going to a health care clinic to get sick. People are going to get healthier, to deliver
babies, to get vaccinated. Yet, hundreds of millions of people face an increased risk of infection by
seeking treatment in health facilities that lack basic necessities, including water , sanitation, hygiene and
waste care systems. That is why clean water is an essential component to have a good sanitation and
proper hygiene.

For example, the birth attendant should practice proper hygiene (WASH) to prevent
contamination in the delivery room. Also contaminated water consumed by a pregnant woman could
endanger her baby’s health. For instance, there are a lot of pregnant woman who lives in slums, most
likely they tend to drink dirty tap water. There are a lot of studies that says drinking contaminated water
may lead to retarding growth and causing birth defects. That is why it is advisable to drink clean water.

SDG 7: Ensure Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All

Electricity in clinics would allow for better and safer health services. Functioning health facilities
should have electricity and running water in order to provide lighting, sterilization, and proper
sanitation. These conditions are especially important for reducing maternal deaths.

For example, women can give birth at night in well-lit delivery rooms if health facilities have
sufficient and accessible electricity. Better sterilization of medical equipment can be used to have safe
and proper labour.
SDG 8: Promote Sustained, Inclusive and Sustainable Economic Growth, Full and Productive
Employment and Decent Work for All

An important part of economic growth is that people have jobs that pay enough to support
themselves and their families. If the father of the family have a decent job then he can give the needs of
his family especially if one member of the family is pregnant.

For example, having the need to go to work if you are pregnant is not necessary especially if
your husband have a decent job. He can provide for his family and can allow you to go to your health
provider to have your regular prenatal care.

SDG 9: Build Resilient Infrastructure, Promote Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization and Foster
Innovation

Technological progress helps us address big global challenges. The world is becoming ever more
interconnected and prosperous thanks to the internet. Having an increase access to information and
communication technology allow us to understand and get useful information.

For example, during this time of covid pandemic. A lot of pregnant woman is having a difficulty
to go to hospital or health center to have their regular prenatal care just because it is too risky to go
outside. Having an internet allows them to talk to their health provider and retrieve information about
pregnancy.

SDG 10: Reduce Inequality

It is a folk story: wealthy people become wealthier and poor people become poorer. The gap
was never bigger. Policies that allow everybody an opportunity, regardless of who or from whomever
they come may and must be adopted. Inequality in income is a worldwide problem requiring global
solutions.

For example, there a lot of instances in a health center whenever there is a line of prenatal
check-up. There is always a form of unfairness when following the rules “first come, first serve”. Poor
people cannot get the same attention as rich people. Greedy health provider will not accommodate you
unless you can offer something for them. This kind of inequality must stop. We should allow people to
get all the benefits that they can get regardless who or where they come from.

SDG 11: Make Cities and Human Settlements Inclusive, Safe, Resilient and Sustainable

Most love cities; they are cultural, business and life centers. But the truth is, they are also
centers of extreme poverty.

For example, in manila Philippines they are a lot of slums area that a pregnant woman have to
deal with because of extreme poverty there. We all know that slums area are least likely to receive
maternal health services and as a result, they face more pregnancy related complications.

We should develop better, inexpensive public housing in order to make communities safe for all.
Slum settlements can be upgraded. An accessible maternal health services for all.
SDG 12: Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns

It is a big achievement if everybody gets what they need to survive and thrive. We should
consume our natural resources in a way that preserves them so that our kids can enjoy them. It also
beneficial for pregnant woman to have healthy and functional ecosystem.

For instance, reducing air and water pollution can be great way to preserve out natural
resources. It is also good for the health of a mother during pregnancy to prevent complications and birth
defects.

SDG 13: Take Urgent Action to Combat Climate Change and Its Impacts

Climate change threatens human health, including mental health, and access to clean air, safe
drinking water, nutritious food, and shelter. Everyone is affected by climate change at some point in
their lives.

For example, most women had safe and stable pregnancies and healthy babies. Climate change
will, however, worsen environmental hazards that endanger the wellbeing of pregnant women and raise
the risk to the health of the baby like air pollutants that can cause respiratory illness in pregnant woman
and also lead to low birth weight. So, it is better to provide countries with a way to collaborate together
to solve this difficult matter.

SDG 14: Conserve and Sustainably Use the Oceans, Seas and Marine Resources for Sustainable
Development

Human survival is made possible by the seas. Their temperature, the chemistry, the tides, the
ways of their lives. Usually, pregnant women are advised to eat fish. The explanation for this is that fish
contains omega-3 fatty acids. These fats are healthy for controlling our levels of blood cholesterol, blood
pressure, eye health, joint health, muscles, bone health, immune recovery, sleep recovery, and skin
health.

For example, eating fish during pregnancy, particularly fatty fish (with some precautions), as
these provide sufficient omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that allow the developing baby's normal brain
development (fetus). Eating fish also provides essential fatty acids that help in the proper development
of vision-related nerve cells in developing babies. It also the reason why we should sustain the life in the
ocean and prevent the extinction of the fish.

SDG 15: Protect, Restore and Promote Sustainable Use of Terrestrial Ecosystems, Sustainably Manage
Forests, Combat Desertification, and Halt and Reverse Land Degradation and Halt Biodiversity Loss

It is indeed important to conserve and restore the use of terrestrial ecosystem such as forest,
wetland, drylands and mountains because allow us human to have a clean air, clean water, and
combatting climate change.

For example, clean air allows a pregnant woman to prevent respiratory illness that can lead to
birth defects and clean water allows a pregnant woman to avoid dirty tap water that can lead to a child
complications especially people who lives in a slums area.
SDG 16: Promote Peaceful And Inclusive Societies For Sustainable Development, Provide Access To
Justice For All And Build Effective, Accountable And Inclusive Institutions At All Levels

Having a law is indeed important for all individuals. Everybody is equal before the Law. It
protects and safeguards the citizenry. It may also protects pregnant woman against discrimination.

For example, the pregnancy discrimination act wherein discrimination based on pregnancy is
forbidden when it comes to any element of jobs, including hiring, dismissal, pay, work assignments,
promotions, resignation, preparation, marginal compensation, such as leave and health care, and any
other term or condition of employment.

Most law provided the mother and child with quality care standards that they deserve during
pregnancy and childbirth. To look after both mother and child, a peaceful and equal government that
offers a stress-free environment is very helpful and essential.

SDG 17: Strengthen the Means Of Implementation And Revitalize The Global Partnership For
Sustainable Development

A strengthen goal is important for all individuals. Having a strong global partnership, all the 17
goal of SDG can be met as early as possible. It can be beneficial for all including humans, animals and
even plants. It can also be beneficial for pregnant women because it can help them to be safe and
healthy.

For example, having a goal that can help you to access health services is indeed important for
your regular prenatal care. Having a goal that allows you to eat nutritious food is important for the
development of the fetus and also to prevent complications.
