Grammatical signals/expressions used in
comparing and contrasting:
1. The use of words
(the same, alike, similar, different, unlike)
Example:
All apples are the same.
Apples and oranges are different.
2. The use of expressions
(as, like, too, both(-and), neither-nor, either-or)
Example:
Both this apple and that orange are sweet.
Neither this apple nor that orange is sweet.
3. The use of connective adverbs/transition
words
(similarly, in the same way, likewise, however, in
contrast, on one hand)
Example:
The apple is delicious. Similarly, the orange is
very flavorful.
The orange belongs to the lime family, while the
apple does not.

4.The use of comparative nouns


( ‘-er’ and ‘more/less’ + than )
Example:
This apple is better than that one.
This apple is more tasty than that one.
We can also use Mathematical terms/symbols in
comparing and
contrasting such as but not limited to more than,
less than, equal or congruent.
Example:
Angle A measures less than angle B.
Angle A < Angle B
The sides of triangle ABC are congruent.
Side A ≈ Side B ≈ Side C
