Assignment 7: Youth Participation in Local

Government
The main aim of La Liga Filipina was “to unite the whole archipelago into one compact,
vigorous, and homogenous body,” their foreseen organization for a Filipino nation. In
order to reach this united body, the participation of its members was very important, so
all members were required to actively participate in all activities of the Liga. According to
its constitution, the members could get involved in several ways such as through these:

1. “In all walks of life, preference shall be given to the members. Nothing shall be
bought except in the shop of a member, or whenever anything is sold to a
member, he shall have a rebate. Circumstances being equal, the member shall
always be favored. Every infraction of this article shall be severely punished.”
2. “He shall bring to each Council a service [trabajo; evidently a service done for
the organization], an observation, a study, or a new candidate.”

This showed their strong belief that the success of their organization and the
accomplishment of their aims depended on the active participation of members.
This is true of any type of organization. Much more so in local governments. The success
of our provinces, municipalities, barangays, even puroks lies in the active participation of
its constituents. Better quality programs and services are developed if more people
participate in its creation; a more effective and equitable implementation of programs
and services is achieved if more people get involved in them—especially the youth who
possess the energy, the creativity, the knowledge to make these program and services
better.
Conduct a small research on existing quantitative data available about the participation
of youth in your own barangay or municipality or city. Identify areas in your own local
government where they have participated. Gather existing quantitative data kept in the
offices of your barangay or municipality or city or other organizations about their
participation in local government (this could be for one year or several years). Present
the data in tables and graphs. Also discuss your analysis and observations about the data
on youth participation.
Format: Write a 3 to 5-page essay about this, Filipino or English, short-sized bond paper,
font size 12, 1.5 spacing. The tables and graphs are already part of the 3 to 5-page essay.
No other formatting requirement.
