1. An infiltration capacity curve prepared for a catchment indicated an initial
infiltration 2.5cm/h and attains a constant value of 0.5cm/h after 10 hours. The
total infiltration volume is 5.5cm. Calculate the Horton constant (K).
2. The mass curve of a rainfall of duration 100min. is given below
Time from 0 20 40 60 80 100
start of
rainfall
(min)
Cumulative 0 0.5 1.2 2.6 3.3 3.5
rainfall(cm)
If the catchment had an initial loss of 0.6cm and φ-index of 0.6cm/hr. calculate
the total surface runoff from the catchment.
3. A small catchment of area 150 ha received a rainfall of 10.5cm in 90 minutes
due to a storm. At the outlet of the catchment, the stream draining the
catchment was dry before the storm and experienced a runoff lasting for 10
hours with an average discharge value of 2 m3/s. The stream was again dry
after the runoff event. (a) What is the amount of water which was not available
to runoff due to combined effect of infiltration, evaporation and transpiration?
What is the ratio of runoff to precipitation?
4. A catchment of 30 km2 has one recording gauge. The data of mass curve of
rainfall during a storm is given below
Time(hr) 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14
Cumulative 0 6 17 57 70 81 87 90
rainfall(mm)
The volume of surface runoff measured is 1.3 million cubic meter. Compute
depth of runoff and estimate φ-index.
5. The isohyet due to a storm in a catchment were drawn as shown in Figure and
the area of the catchment bounded by isohyets were tabulated as below
Isohyets(cm) Area (km2)
Station - 12 30
12 - 10 140
10- 8 80
8-6 180
6- 4 20
Estimate the mean precipitation due to storm.
6. A catchment has seven rain gauge stations. In a year, the annual rainfall in cm
recorded by the gauges are as follows: 130, 142.1, 118.2, 108.5, 165.2, 102.1,
and 146.9. For a 5% error in the estimation of the mean rainfall, calculate the
minimum number of additional stations required to be established in the
catchment.
7. Discharge from a 40cm diameter tube well fully penetrating on unconfined
aquifer of 50 m thickness under depression head of 4m is 2500 liters/min. find
the discharge of the well under a drawdown of 6m. Radius of influence may
be taken as 320m.
8. Figure below represents a catchment area with the precipitations observed in
a year. Calculate the mean precipitation by Thiessen method and check the
result by the arithmetic mean method.

9. During a high water surface elevations of a small stream were noted at two
sections A and B, 10 km apart. The elevations and other salient hydraulic
properties are given below.
Section Water surface Area of cross Hydraulic
elevation sections radius(m)
A 104.77 73.293 2.733
B 104.500 93.375 3.089
The eddy loss coefficient of 0.3 for gradual expansion, 0.1 for gradual
contraction and Manning’s roughness = 0.02. Estimate the flood discharge of
the stream.
10.Flood frequency records on a river have been collected for 17 years starting
from 1951 to 1967 and the peak values of the flood observed during these 17
years are given below:
Year Peak Year Peak
