Fall 2012
Course objectives:
In this course, robust controller synthesis and analysis techniques will be covered for linear multivariable
dynamic systems. The emphasis of the course will be on the quantitative description of uncertainty
models for dynamic systems. The concepts of robust stability and robust performance will be defined.
Controller synthesis and analysis for systems with a given level of uncertainty using H∞ and Structured
Singular Value () techniques will be introduced. These techniques will be applied to aerospace and
mechanical systems such as missiles, aircraft and flexible structures.
Outline:
Reasons for using feedback and its restrictions, review of classical control, frequency domain design
methods (Nyquist plot, Bode plot, lead-lag compensation), robustness measures (gain and phase
margin).
Mathematical Background: Signals and systems, H2 and H∞ spaces, 2-norm and -norm, singular
value decomposition, Linear Fractional Transformations (LFT)
Representation of Uncertainty: Sources of uncertainty, parametric, additive and multiplicative
uncertainty descriptions
Robust stability and robust performance concepts
Matlab and control design toolboxes (mu-tools and robust control toolbox)
Robustness Analysis: Singular value techniques, Small gain theorem, Structured Singular Value
State observers/estimators, Kalman Filter, H∞ filter, Riccati Equations
Full state feedback, H2 and H∞ synthesis.
Design case studies
