Preliminary Report:

Protocol:

MR imaging of the lumbosacral spine was performed and high-

resolution T1 and T2 weighted serial sections obtained in the
sagittal and axial planes and T2 STIR in sagittal plane using a
phased Array surface coil on a 3-Tesla Scanner.

Observations:

There is straightening of the lumbar spine.

Height and alignment of the lumbar vertebral bodies is

maintained.

Signals from the marrow of the vertebral bodies are normal.

Mild osteophytosis seen at L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels.

Early degenerative end-plate changes seen at L4-L5 and L5-S1

levels.

Facetal arthropathy is seen at L3-L4 and L4-L5 levels.

Ligamentum flava hypertrophy is seen at L3-L4 to L5-S1 levels.

Intervertebral disc dessication with posterior annular tear seen

at L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs.

Diffuse disc bulge seen at L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels compressing

the thecal sac (mild central lumbar canal stenosis) narrowing the
lateral recesses and encroaching the left neural foramina at
these levels.

Mild subarticular disc protrusion is seen at L3-L4 level indenting

the lateral recesses.

The conus medullaris ends at L1-L2 level. Signals from the lower
cord and conus medullaris are normal.

Paravertebral soft tissues and myofascial planes are normal.

IMPRESSION: MRI findings are suggestive of lumbar spondylosis

seen as;

(1) Straightening of the lumbar spine with mild osteophytosis,

facetal arthropathy and flava hypertrophy.

(2) Posterior annular tear with diffuse disc bulge at L4-L5 and L5-
S1 levels compressing the thecal sac (mild central lumbar canal
stenosis) narrowing the lateral recesses and encroaching the left
neural foramina at these levels.
