HAULOTTE self-propelled platforms so as to use them efficiently and
SAFELY. It cannot, however, replace the basic training necessary for any
user of site equipment.
The head of the establishment must ensure that operators know the
instructions in the instruction manual. The head of establishment is also
responsible for implementation of the "user regulations" in force in the
country of use.
To ensure safe and efficient use of the platform, it is essential to familiarise
yourself with all these instructions, before using the machine.
This instruction manual must be kept available to any operator.

1.1.2 - Labels
Potential dangers and instructions concerning the machine are indicated
by labels and plates. It is necessary to read the instructions appearing on
them.
All of the labels comply with the following colour code:
• Red indicates a potentially fatal danger.
• Orange indicates a danger which may cause serious injury.
• Yellow indicates a danger which may cause material damage or slight
injury.
The head of the establishment must make sure that these labels are in
good condition and legible.

1.1.3 - Safety

2.3 - DESCRIPTION
HAULOTTE scissor platforms are work platforms surrounded by protective
guard rails. They can be raised or lowered by a hydraulic cylinder acting on
scissors with three or four sections, depending on the model, themselves
supporting the work platform.

The chassis has two steer wheels at the front and two braked drive wheels
at the back, fitted with puncture-proof tyres (inflated with polyurethane
foam) with an all-terrain tread. On all-terrain models (H12SDX - H15SDX -
H18SDX), the front wheels are drive-steered.

Each machine’s power is supplied by a diesel thermal motor. All of the

control and power devices are installed in two side compartments and
include:
• the hydraulic reservoir + filters
• the air-cooled thermal motor + hydraulic pump

10

• the fuel tank,

• the hydraulic distribution unit
• the thermal motor starting battery
• the electrical operating cabinet
• the tilt sensor
• the 2 electric pumps + charger (bi-energy option).
The electrical cabinet on the chassis controls:
• station selection
• motor fault light indicators
• hour counter
• the platform’s raising or lowering movement
• thermal motor on/off
• emergency stop for all movements.
The three movements: travel, steering and platform elevation are
performed hydraulically.
Travel and elevation in proportional control.
Steering is operated by a double-action cylinder.

Options:
• Stabilising: a set of four support cylinders fixed to the chassis and con-
trolled from the platform increases the platform’s stability.
• 2nd sliding extension: 1000 mm stroke.
• Bi-energy: for non-all-terrain models (H12SDE - H15SDE), electrical
power is supplied by 24 volt dc traction batteries.

3 - OPERATING PRINCIPLE
3.1 - HYDRAULIC CIRCUIT
All the machine’s movements are powered by hydraulic energy supplied by
a gear pump driven by a thermal motor.
In the bi-energy version, hydraulic power can be supplied by two electric
gear pumps powered by traction batteries.
In the event of a breakdown, manual back-up action enables the scissors
to be lowered.
A high pressure filter mounted on pump discharge protects the installation
from pollution.

3.1.1 - Scissor lifting, travel movements

These are controlled by on/off distributors via a proportional control
distributor which gives progressiveness of movement.
Only one movement at a time is possible.

3.1.2 - Stabilising/steer movement

This is controlled by an on/off electrovalve supplied by the small pump
body.
In the bi-energy version, a single electric pump powers this movement.

3.1.3 - Scissor lifting cylinder

This is equipped with a valve flanged on the body.

Caution !
Adjustment can only be carried out 3.1.4 - Brake release of the wheel reducers during travel

3.1.5 - Travel
Supply motor.
4 x 2 version Two hydraulic motors drive the wheels on the fixed axle via epicyclic reducers.
Two speeds (high, low) are controlled by a switch.
•High speed – 4 x 2 and bi-energy: The 2 motors are supplied in series, they receive the pump
flow which goes into one motor and then the other.
•Low speed – 4 x 2 and bi-energy: The 2 motors are supplied in parallel, each receiving half of
the pump’s flow.
Hydraulic differential locking is available in low speed.
4 x 4 version Four hydraulic motors drive the wheels via epicyclic reducers.
Three speeds (high, intermediate, low) are controlled by a switch.
•High speed - 4 x 4: The fixed axle’s 2 motors are supplied in series, the steered axle is in
freewheel.
•Intermediate speed - 4 x 4: The fixed axle’s 2 motors are supplied in parallel, the steered axle
is in freewheel.
•Low speed - 4 x 4: Each axle receives half of the flow supplied by the pump. On each axle the
motors are supplied in parallel. One hydraulic differential lock per axle is available in low and
intermediate speed.

3.2 - ELECTRIC CIRCUIT

The electrical energy used for the controls and starting the thermal motor
is supplied by a 12 V battery.
The electrical power necessary to operate the bi-energy electric pumps is
supplied by a 24 V traction battery pack.
An on-board charger enables these batteries to be recharged overnight by
connection to a 16A domestic socket.

3.2.1 - Details of the main safety devices

Automatic motor stop:
• oil pressure too low
• clogging of the air filter
• breakage of the fan or alternator belt

3.2.1.1 -Load sensor

If the platform load reaches 90% of the maximum permitted load, the
buzzer alerts the operator.
When this maximum load is reached, the control circuit is cut, preventing
all movements. Load must be shed to reset the unit.

3.2.1.2 -Tilt sensor

The tilt sensor gives an audible signal when the maximum permitted tilt is
reached..
Maximum tilt
H12SD 5°
H15SD 5°
H18SD 3°

If this situation persists, after a time delay of 1 to 2 seconds, control of the

scissor lifting (lowering) movement is cut off, together with travel,as long as
the machine platform is up. In order to be able to use travel again, all the
scissors must be folded.

NOTA : With the machine extended, the tilt sensor gives an audible
signal while the slope is greater than the maximum permitted
tilt, indicating to the operator that it is impossible to raise the
scissors.

3.2.1.3 -High travel speed

High travel speed is permitted only when the machine is completely folded.
When the platform is raised, only micro speed is possible.

3.2.2 - Hour counter

An hour counter indicates how long the thermal motor has been operating.
A counter indicates the electric pumps’ operating time in the bi-energy
version.

3.2.3 - Traction battery charge

In the bi-energy version, if the traction batteries become 80% discharged,
only the machine folding and travel movements are possible, in order to get
to a recharging point.

4 - USING THE MACHINE

4.1 - GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
Your scissor type platform is mobile.
All the movements are controlled from a control box situated on the
platform’s extension. This is the main operating station; the control box
situated on the chassis is an emergency assistance and rescue station.

Caution !
Do not use the machine if the wind
speed exceeds 45 kph.

Caution !
Do not carry out any operations To avoid any risk of accident, if you try to use the machine above its
before reading the instructions in capabilities, safety devices are provided to protect personnel and the
chapter 4.3. machine.
They immobilise the machine or neutralise its movements. In this case
inadequate knowledge of the machine’s characteristics and operation can
lead one to believe that there is a breakdown when in fact it is the safety
devices which are working properly.
It is therefore essential to understand all the instructions in the following
chapters.

4.1.1 - Movement

REMINDER :The lift is designed to work on hard ground whose slope or tilt
does not exceed the maximum tilt specified. Beyond this, the
buzzer goes off if the machine is extended. Travel is possible
if the machine is folded to enable the machine to be moved to
access the place of work.

The machine cannot be moved if it is overloaded. In this case, it is

immobilised.
The H12SD and H15SD models, with or without the bi-energy option, can
be operated at low or high speed travel, forwards or backwards over short
distances, with the platform in the lowered position.
The same is true for the H12DSX, H15DSX and H18SDX models in their
three travel speeds.
Movement with the platform in the raised position (less than 8 m) must be
on hard, flat and horizontal ground only without any obstacles or holes.
Only micro travel speed is then possible.
It is impossible to raise the platform and travel simultaneously.

4.1.2 - Overload
In the raised position (pressure limiter valve), if the maximum load is
reached, the lowering movement is neutralised.
Load must be shed to enable all the movements again.

33
Operation and servicing -H12SD/SDX/SDE-H15SD/SDX/SDE-H18SDX

4.1.3 - Battery discharge (bi-energy option)

If the traction battery is 80% discharged, it is impossible to raise the
platform.
Procedure for emergency assistance or rescue (see chapter 4.6).

Caution !
If an emergency assistance or 4.1.4 - Filling the fuel tank
rescue operation is necessary, the

only a skilled operator can carry out
these operations.
Do not pump from a drum if the latter is not decanted and never use the
bottom.
Because of fire risks during tank filling, take the following precautions:
• do not smoke,
• switch off the thermal motor if it is on,
• stand upwind so as not to be sprayed with fuel,
• with the pump’s pouring spout, touch the outside of the filling hole be-
fore starting to fill up, so as to avoid the risk of sparks due to static
electricity,
• replace the tank filler cap properly and clean off any fuel which has
run outside the tank.

4.2 - OFFLOADING – LOADING – MOVEMENT

IMPORTANT : Before any operation, check the condition of the ma-
chine to make sure that it has not been damaged during transport. If
it has, make the necessary reserves with the carrier in writing.

Caution !
Incorrect operation can cause the 4.2.1 - Offloading by lifting

serious bodily injury and material
damage. Carry out offloading
operations on a stable, sufficiently
resistant (see chapter 2.6 – Ground
pressure), flat and uncluttered
surface.

Operation and servicing -H12SD/SDX/SDE-H15SD/SDX/SDE-H18SDX

Make sure that:

• The machine is totally folded,
• Lifting accessories are in good condition and have sufficient capacity.
• The slinging accessories can support the load and are not abnormal
worn.
• The slinging lugs are clean and in good condition.
• The personnel performing the operation is authorised to use lifting
equipment.

Offloading:
• Hook the 4 slings to the 4 slinging lugs (see sketch above).
• Lift slowly, making sure that the load is evenly distributed, and set the
machine down slowly.

Caution !

operation.
• The machine is totally folded
• The ramps can support the load and that adherence is sufficient to
avoid any risk of slipping during operation and that the ramps are cor-
rectly fixed.

IMPORTANT : Since this method requires the machine to be

switched on, refer to chapter 4.3 to avoid any risk of incorrect oper-
ation. Select low travel speed.

NOTA : Since ramp slope is practically always greater than the maxi-
mum working slope (5°) the buzzer sounds but travel is possi-
ble. If the slope is greater than the maximum travel slope (see
ch. 2.4), use a hoist as a traction or retention aid.

Caution !
Do not go down ramps at high 4.2.3 - Loading
speed.
The precautions are identical to the offloading precautions.
The machine must be secured in accordance with the sketch below.
To go up a lorry’s ramps, select low travel speed.

4.2.4 - Travel
Comply carefully with the traffic instructions or regulations in machine
movement areas.
On uneven ground, check out the route before beginning high work.
Always keep a safe distance away from unstable edges or banks.
Make sure that there is no one in the immediate vicinity of the machine
before carrying out a movement or travel operation. Be particularly vigilant
if the machine is extended, as visibility is reduced

REMINDER :It is forbidden to travel on the public highway.

4.3 - OPERATIONS BEFORE FIRST OPERATION

During its manufacture, each platform is subject to continuous quality
inspections. Transport can cause damage. You must report any damage to

4.5 - HOUR COUNTER/BATTERY CHARGE MONITOR (BI-ENERGY)

This combines in a single unit (item 7, photo 2) the following functions:
• State of charge of the batteries
• Hour counter
• Resetting.

4.5.1 - State of battery charge

By a display consisting of 10 bars: 2 red, 3 orange, 5 green.
When the battery is correctly charged, the green LED, on the far right,
comes on. The charger must then be disconnected and charging ended.
When the battery discharges, the LEDs come on successively from right to
left one after the other.
• When the battery is 70% discharged, the first red LED flashes. Re-
charging of the batteries is recommended.
• When the battery is 80% discharged, the first two red LEDs flash. The
cut-off threshold has been reached and elevation movements are in-
terrupted. Recharging of the batteries is compulsory.

42
Operation and servicing -H12SD/SDX/SDE-H15SD/SDX/SDE-H18SDX

4.5.2 - Hour counter

The hours are counted when the electric pump unit is operating, at that time
the “timer” flashes.

4.5.3 - Resetting
This takes place when the battery is correctly recharged.
The monitor is powered by a lithium battery with a service life of over 15
years.
A 2 A – FU1 fuse protects the monitor.

4.6 - USING THE ON-BOARD CHARGER (BI-ENERGY)

Caution !
Do not use the machine during 4.6.1 - Characteristics
charging.
The traction batteries must be charged with the charger provided for this
purpose. DO NOT OVERCHARGE THEM.
• Charger: 24 V – 50 A.
• Power supply: single-phase 220 V – 50 Hz.
• Voltage supplied: 24 V.
• Charge time: about 12 hours for batteries 70% to 80% discharged.
• Charge curve completely controlled by micro-controller.
• Protection against battery polarity inversion: by three 25 A automobile
type output fuses.
• Mains connection: standardised plug 2 poles + earth 16 A – 230 V.

4.6.2 - Starting charging

Starting is automatic on connection to the mains. The charger is equipped
with 2 signal lamps:
• the green lamp signals the presence of mains power
• the yellow lamp signals charging in progress:
- it is “on” at the beginning of charging
- it flashes quickly as soon as the value of the voltage threshold at
the charger’s output reaches 29 V
- it flashes slowly in the overcharge phase
- it flashes on occasionally during the equalisation phase
- it goes out when charging is complete or if the mains disappears.
• If there is a fault on the charging time, the green lamp flashes.

4.6.3 - Holding charge

If the charger remains connected to the mains for longer than 48 hours, it
re-starts a charging cycle every 48 hours, after the end of the preceding
charge so as to compensate for self-discharging.

4.6.4 - Interrupting charging

The charger is stopped by disconnecting the mains plug. If it is necessary
to operate the machine during a charging cycle, the charger must be
disconnected. After the operation, re-connect the charger. If charging is
interrupted for more than 13 minutes, a complete charging cycle is
initialised.

4.6.5 - Precautions of use

Avoid recharging the batteries if the temperature of the electrolyte is over
40C. Let it cool down.
Keep the top of the batteries dry and clean. An incorrect connection or
corrosion can cause considerable loss of power.

43
Operation and servicing -H12SD/SDX/SDE-H15SD/SDX/SDE-H18SDX

If new batteries are fitted, recharge after 3 or 4 hours of use and do so 3 to

5 times.
The charger has been adjusted in the factory using the cable with which it
is equipped. If replacing this cable, make sure that a cable of the same
section and length is fitted.
The charger is protected by a time-lag 250 V 15 A 6.3 x 32 fuse fitted
directly on the printed circuit board. In the event of failure (charger not
serviceable), do not intervene, but contact PINGUELY-HAULOTTE’s After-
Sales Department.

4.7 - USING AND SERVICING BATTERIES

The batteries are your platform’s power source. Here are a few
recommendations which will enable you to use their capacity without any
risk of premature damage.

4.7.1 - Putting into service

Check that the electrolyte level is correct.
Use the batteries sparingly during the initial cycles. Make sure that you do
not discharge to more than 70% of the rated capacity (first red bar on the
monitor flashes).
The batteries give their full capacity after about ten work cycles. Do not add
electrolyte before these ten cycles.

4.7.2 - Discharging
Never discharge the batteries to over 80% of their capacity in 5 hours (2
red bars flash on the charge state monitor).
Make sure that the monitor is working properly.
Never leave the batteries discharged.
In cold weather, do not put off recharging because the electrolyte could
freeze.

4.7.3 - Charging
• When to recharge?
- when the batteries are discharged between 35 and 80% of their
rated capacity
- after a long period without operation.
• How to recharge?
- make sure that the mains is suited to the charger’s consumption.
- top up with electrolyte to the minimum level if an element has a
level below this minimum.
- operate in clean, well-ventilated premises without any flame
nearby.
- open the covers of the compartments.
- use the machine’s on-board charger. It has a charging rate
appropriate to the capacity of the batteries.
• During charging:
- do not remove or open the caps on the elements.
- make sure that the temperature of the elements does not exceed
45°C (be careful in summer or in premises with a high ambient
temperature).
• After charging:
- top up with electrolyte if necessary.

44
Operation and servicing -H12SD/SDX/SDE-H15SD/SDX/SDE-H18SDX

4.7.4 - Servicing
• Check the electrolyte levels before charging once a week in normal
use.
• If necessary, top up:
- with distilled or demineralised water
- after charging.
• Never add acid (in case of spillage, contact PINGUELY-HAULOTTE’s
After-Sales Department).
• Never leave discharged batteries un-used.
• Avoid overflows.
• Clean the batteries to prevent any formation of salts or current leak-
age:
- wash the top without removing the caps
- dry with compressed air, with clean cloths…
- grease the terminals.
• The servicing operations on the batteries must be carried out safely
(wearing gloves and goggles).
In order to diagnose the state of your batteries quickly, record once a month
the density of each element, using a hydrometer, as a function of the
temperature using the graphs below (do not measure directly after filling).

4.8 - MANUAL EXTENSIONS

In standard version, the lifts are equipped with a single manual extension.
(photo 8). The second extension is available as an option.
Conditions of use.
To extend or retract the extension, grab the 2 handles provided for this
purpose, lift them to 90 and push them in the direction of the movement
required. Lifting the handles by 90 automatically disengages the
extension’s position holding bolts (item 1, photo 9). During transport on a
trailer or vehicle, and during work, the manual extension or extensions
1 must be locked.
Check that the bolts are properly engaged when the handles are returned
to their original position so as to avoid an unwanted retraction or extension.

4.11 - STABILISING.
A set of four cylinders fixed to the chassis and controlled from the platform
panel increases the machine’s stability.
The four switches (item 1, photo 1) control the extension and retraction of
the stabilising cylinders. Control of each cylinder is independent.

Caution !
The stabilisers must always be SERIOUS RISK OF OVERTURNING
adjusted with the platform in the
lowered position and horizontal.
The four cylinders must be resting
on the ground. Never alter the
position of the stabilisers when the
machine is extended.

The four stabilisers are controlled using 4 buttons (photo 1, item 1) each
independent of the others.
Lowering the stabilisers:
• Move the stabiliser buttons (photo 1, item 1) down. Activating the four
buttons at once means the stabilisers are lowered more slowly.
• When a cylinder is extended, the buzzer sounds and the correspon-
ding light indicator comes on on the platform control panel.
Raising the stabilisers:
• Move the stabiliser buttons (photo 1, item 1) up. Activating the four
buttons at once means the stabilisers are raised more slowly.

NOTA : The stabilisers are moved up and down without acceleration.

Caution !
Travel is disabled if at least one of Ground detection option:
the stabilisers is lowered. • Ground detection operates using 4 pressure sensors.
• The four light indicators flash if the cylinders are not in contact with the
ground and if the manipulator is pushed.
• The upward movement is authorised if the machine is secured or if the
four cylinders are retracted.

The machine is equipped with 3 safety devices:

• The travel functions are de-activated so long as the four cylinders are
not fully retracted.
• Any adjustment of the position of a cylinder can be carried out only
when the platform is lowered.
• When the cylinder is extended, the corresponding light indicator is on.
• The "raise" function is only possible if the four cylinders are in contact
with the ground (option).

Filter with a clogging indicator.
• Change the cartridge (2) when the clogging mark appears in the indi-
cator (1).
• Undo the base nut (3) and remove the cartridge and fit a new cartridge
3
NOTA : Clogging must be checked when the oil is hot. When the oil is
cold the mark can appear because of the viscosity of the oil.

Photo 13: Oil filter

Caution !
Before removal, make sure that the
oil circuit is no longer pressurised
and that the oil is not too hot.

5.4.2.2 -Drive wheel reducers (Photo 14)

To check the oil level and change the oil, you have to remove the wheel.
2
To do this, immobilise the machine and raise it using a jack or a hoist.
• Checking the oil level:
1 - Rotate the wheel so as to put 1 plug (1) on a horizontal line and 1
plug (2) on a vertical line.
- Unscrew plug (1) and check the level which should be flush with
the hole, if necessary top up.
- Replace the plug.
• Changing the oil:
- In the same position, unscrew both plugs and let the oil run out.
- Fill as indicated above.
- Replace the plugs.
Photo 14: Reducer

Caution !
Make sure that the machine is
correctly blocked, and that the
lifting equipment is of sufficient
capacity and in good condition.

6 - TROUBLE-SHOOTING
These few pages should enable you to “get over” any operating problem
you may have on your scissor platform.
If a problem arises which is not covered in this chapter or which is not
resolved by the solutions appearing below, you should consult qualified
technical personnel before proceeding with any maintenance operation. It
is also necessary to note that most of the problems encountered on the
machine will come mainly from the electrical and hydraulic systems.

Before anything else, check that:

• the batteries are charged: the charge monitor’s right-hand green LED
must be “on”
• the two mushroom-headed emergency stop buttons on the chassis
control box and on the platform control box are unlocked and the key
is in the chassis or platform position
• the battery breaker is closed (bi-energy option H12SDE)
