Emerging role of academic libraries in Pakistan

1.1 Literature review

The biggest challenge for libraries is to attract potential modern users and provide them with
the information they need (McGillis, 2016). At this stage of transition and complexity,
effective leadership is needed to secure the future of academic libraries (Harland, Steward,
and Bruce, 2017, Fight and Misawa, 2018). The lack of visionary leadership also contributes
to the lack of communication between library professionals (Ashiq, Rehman, and Batool,
2018).
Ashiq, Rahman and Batool (2018) The alternate and transition has furnished
incredible possibilities for expert improvement and accelerated collaboration among
librarians, associations, library colleges and employers. These developments and
destiny roles predictions spotlight that library specialists want to redefine their roles
and obligations to completely regulate to and in shape withinside the speedy converting
environment. Lack of visionary leadership also contributes to lack of communication
between library staff.

Ameen (2006) Today's academic libraries say they face long-term challenges in
technical impact, governance, education, digitization, academic communication,
support for modern learners, and financing. Traditional culture and thinking are
barriers to innovation and creativity among young professionals. Ameen emphasizes
the lack of visionary library governance in Pakistan that has not yet been addressed.

Madge (2016 ) states that the National Library law has failed in Romania. When it
should embrace vision and innovation, i t is ineffective and imperfect. Co-acquisition
is another important area for librarians to focus on in the future. The syllabus,
resources, and practices used by graduate students have not been updated by
universities offering LIS education (Ashiq, Batool, and Rehman, 2018 ). Digitalization
of traditional resources ; Diversification of resources, tools and media. Access to and
dissemination of information is an important direction for future work (Madge, 2016;
Muthanna and Sang, 2019).
Murtaza, Shafiq and Mujtaba (2020) The results of the survey show that the
leadership crisis is the biggest challenge for the profession. It was pointed out that
specialized institutions did not play their role effectively and could not establish inter-
library cooperation and coordinated policy making. However, it was also pointed out
that the leadership crisis is not a new phenomenon. In Pakistan, the situation has been
the same for almost 15 to 20 years (Haider, 2004 ; Ameen, 2006 ) due to the lac k of
competent professionals in key managerial positions. In addition, there is a "memo
culture" in academic institutions where faculty "memo" continues to be popular every
year. This memorized culture helped further further the leadership crisis by suppressing
creativity, innovation, and vision among future library professionals. To promote
creativity, collaboration and vision, such practices need to be changed and the library
science curriculum needs to be renewed.
