Historical-Biographical Criticism in the Short Movie ‘Most’

Historical-biographical criticism is a form of literary criticism which analyzes a writer's

biography or you can say this as a traditional approach that has developed over the past
three centuries to show the relationship between the author's life and their works of
literature. There are difference meaning in historical criticism and biographical criticism.
Historical mainly focusses on a literary works back ground; cultural and social contexts
as well as the author biography. Biographical criticism mainly focusses on considering
the author and the fact-based knowledge of his/her life which accompanies him/her.

There were many kinds of literary works such as journal, books, video, film, etc. As for
the movie part usually the creator are influenced by the world around them or having an
individual experience of writing or creating a work. This time, our group watch a short
movie about a true story of a man named John Griffith. In the 1930s, he worked as a
controller of a large railroad bridge across the Mississippi River. The author lifts the
period from the true story by adapting it with (perhaps) more sophisticated properties
when creating the work without losing the impression of the past. The viewers seemed
to be transported to the past where technology was not yet modern. The function of the
short movie is to show everyone about a father's love for his child. The purpose of the
short movie is to teach parents not to be careless when they let their children play alone.

Sometimes, there are problems when author or creator publish their book, journal, or
movie. The words of modern time for example, it is a bit simpler and easy to understand
than the old one, author or creator copy sometimes has an error which go unnoticed and
got published before gotten re-write or re-make, etc. To meet the criteria in historical
biography criticism, genre criticism and moral criticism is needed. With genre criticism,
we can decide what kind of genre we are dealing with. That way, we can deal with and
understand this literature easily by using categories, and we are drawn closer to
individual. There are four terms associated with genre criticism; genre, catharsis, hubris,
neoclassical and focal character.
