Introduction

Good afternoon, everyone! Thank you for taking the time and coming here.
My name is Daniel Tapusi and I am here to talk about my Formula 1 race
predictor. This is a machine learning approach to predict the winner of the
Formula 1 races throughout the year. This presentation is divided into 3 parts.
The first part focuses on the objectives of this software. In the second part I
will explain how all the data was gathered and the decision process behind it.
And in the third part I will present the machine learning algorithms used and
the results.

2. The Body of the Presentation

Coming back to the first part of my presentation which focuses on the

objectives of the Formula 1 race predictor, I would like to say that the main
goal of this project is to explore different machine learning techniques to
predict the course of a season, given the unpredictability of the sport. Formula
1 is undoubtedly the most technologically advanced sport on the planet. The
strategic decisions are based on models that the teams run for thousands of
times on different scenarios to choose the best plan for the race and as the
race progresses the models give constant feedback about which would be the
optimal strategy at that time. Therefore, I tried to predict the result of every
driver from every race throughout the year.
The first part of my presentation has come to an end. Moving on to the
second part of my presentation which describes the data preparation. I would
like to point out that an important step before building the machine learning
model is to analyse and pre-process the data. Using the Amazon AWS database
I was able to collect the information on Formula 1 races since 1983. Of course,
all sports are unpredictable, I have taken into consideration some important
topics as: the age of the driver, the position where the driver is starting from,
the weather and many more.
The second part of my presentation has come to an end. Moving on to the
third part of my presentation which addresses the machine learning modelling
and the comparison between the algorithms that I have used. After running all
the algorithms I would like to present you a chart that shows how precise the
models were: the classification with neural networks and SVM returned the
highest precision scores, correctly predicting the winner for 62% of the races in
2021.

3. Graph explanations

Also, this diagram shows the age of the winning drivers from 1983 until this
year, showing a downward sloping trend line.
4. Ending the presentation

My presentation has come to an end therefore, I will make a quick

summary of the aspects I have presented you today. Firstly, I have focused on
the objectives of this software. Secondly, I explained how all the data was
gathered. And lastly, I presented the machine learning algorithms used and the
results.
In conclusion, after getting all my predicted winners together, I decided to
look at the odds published by Sky Sport for the races in the 2021 season and
test my software. The result showed that the algorithm has beaten the odds,
predicting the winner correctly in 13 out of the 21 races.
