serve announced on April 28 that it
would keep U.S. interest rates near
zero as the pandemic “continues to

The Idaho Senate approved a pro-
posal on April 26 to prevent the
teaching of critical race theory in
the Gem State’s public schools and
universities.
The measure, H 377, was passed
largely along party lines in a 27–8
vote; one Republican, Sen. Dan
Johnson, joined Democrats in op-
posing the bill. The legislation now
heads to Republican Gov. Brad Lit-
tle’s desk as the state House has also
approved it.

India’s CCP virus surge has claimed
more than 200,000 lives, a grim
milestone in a pandemic-ravaged
country whose health system is
strained to the breaking point.

are dying in ambulances
before reaching hospitals.

The health ministry on April 28
reported a single-day record of
3,293 COVID-19 deaths in the previ-
ous 24 hours, bringing India’s total
fatalities to 201,187, as the world’s
second-most populous country
endures its darkest chapter of the
outbreak yet. Indian authorities
also reported 362,757 new infec-
tions, a new global record.
Hospitalizations have also hit re-
cord highs, overwhelming health
care workers. Unavailability of
beds, shortage of oxygen, and
hours of waiting at crematoriums
have combined with the staggering
death and infection numbers, fuel-
ing an atmosphere of fear.
“Whole system is messed up at hos-
pitals, there is no oxygen at hospitals
and no beds, people are dying in am-
bulances before reaching hospitals,
what else will we feel [if not afraid]?”
said Delhi resident Amit Sharma, in
an interview with Reuters.

Secrecy Surrounds Solitary Confinement of 2 Men
Arrested in Jan. 6 Capitol Breach

Julian Khater of Pennsylvania and
George Tanios of West Virginia are
being held without bail by the fed-
eral government in a District of Co-
lumbia Department of Corrections
(DOC) restrictive housing facility.
“Restrictive housing” is another
way of saying “solitary confine-
ment.” Khater and Tanios are re-
stricted to their cells for all but one
hour of each day, which is their only
opportunity for physical exercise,
talking with other inmates, or con-
ferring with their attorneys.

of the men is shared by “dozens” of
Jan. 6 detainees who also are being
held in restrictive housing.
Spokesmen for both the U.S. De-
partment of Justice (DOJ) and DOC
didn’t respond to multiple requests
from The Epoch Times to interview
Khater and Tanios, or to answer
questions about their cases.
Attorneys for Khater and Tanios
declined to comment on the case.
Their clients are charged with mul-
tiple felonies in connection with
their participation in the Jan. 6 pro-
tests and breach of the U.S. Capitol.
Among the charges are “assault
on a federal officer with a danger-
ous weapon, civil disorder, conspir-
acy to injure an officer, obstructing
or impeding an official proceed-
ing, physical violence while on
restricted grounds and resulting
in significant bodily injury, violent
entry and disorderly conduct, an
act of physical violence on Capitol
grounds, and aiding and abetting.”
In its announcement of the ar-
rests of the two men, the DOJ said
the charges were based on evidence
in which they “were observed in
video footage working together to
assault law enforcement officers
with an unknown chemical sub-
stance by spraying officers directly
in the face and eyes.”
“During the investigation, it is
alleged that law enforcement dis-
covered video that depicted Khater
asking Tanios to ‘give me that bear
[expletive].’ Tanios replied, ‘Hold
on, hold on, not yet, not yet ... it’s
still early.’ Khater then retrieved a
canister from Tanios’s backpack
and walked through the crowd to
within a few steps of the police pe-
rimeter,” the announcement reads.

An Arizona judge on April 28 re-
jected an attempt by the Arizona
Democratic Party to immediately
halt an audit of the 2020 election in
the state’s largest county.
Maricopa County Superior Court
Judge Daniel Martin said Demo-
crats didn’t provide “substantive
evidence of any breaches or threat-
ened breaches of voter privacy.”
The lawsuit, filed just before the
audit started last week, may ulti-
mately succeed, the judge added.
But it fell short of the “strong like-
lihood” of succeeding standard
required for a temporary restrain-
ing order.
Martin also expressed doubt that
the balance of hardship in the case
or public policy favors the plain-
tiffs—two factors that are needed
to grant the order.

pearing to be holding a canister in
his right hand and aiming it at the
officers’ direction while moving his
right arm from side to side.
“The complaint affidavit states
that Officers [U.S. Capitol Police
Officer Brian] Sicknick, [C.] Ed-
wards, and [Metropolitan Police
Department Officer D.] Chapman,
who were all standing within a few
feet of Khater, each reacted to be-
ing sprayed in the face. The officers
retreated, bringing their hands to
their faces and rushing to find wa-
ter to wash out their eyes.”
Sicknick died Jan. 7 and was ini-
tially reported by The New York
Times to have died after being hit
with a fire extinguisher thrown by a
protester. Later, media reports said
Sicknick died due to being hit in the
face with bear spray.
The Washington Post reported,
referring to Khater and Tanios, that
or to advance to an evidentiary
hearing to try to make their case
for an injunction.
Lawyers for the party had argued
that Cyber Ninjas, one of four firms
hired by the Arizona Senate to con-
duct the audit, didn’t properly train
their personnel and hadn’t imple-
mented plans for security proce-
dures, such as securing ballots.
But the exhibits they entered,
including local news reports al-
leging lax security at the Arizona
Veterans Memorial Coliseum in
Phoenix, where the audit is taking
place, didn’t contain enough evi-
dence to convince the judge to halt
the process.
Martin said he took into account
how the audit has already started
and that halting it would cause a
“significant disruption.”
Earlier in the proceeding, the
judge ruled against Cyber Ninjas’
attempt to file under seal docu-
ments the company described as
sensitive. The company failed to
the ruling “will make it difficult for
prosecutors to pursue homicide
charges in the officer’s death. Two
men are accused of assaulting Sick-
nick by spraying a powerful chemi-
cal irritant at him during the siege,
but prosecutors have not tied that
exposure to Sicknick’s death.”
The District of Columbia Medi-
cal Examiner ruled April 19 that
Sicknick died of natural causes,
thus eliminating the possibility
that Khater and Tanios could, as
widely reported, be charged in
connection with the officer’s death
due to the bear spray.
The two men are among the
more than 400 arrested to date by
federal authorities in connection
with Jan. 6. Most of those arrested
were released, pending their tri-
als. But Khater and Tanios are still
in custody.
Their plight has drawn public
expressions of concern from two
of the most liberal members of the
U.S. Senate, Senate Majority Whip
Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Eliza-
beth Warren (D-Mass.), who was
a 2020 Democratic presidential
nomination contender.
Warren told Politico that “solitary
confinement is a form of punish-
ment that is cruel and psychologi-
cally damaging. And we’re talking
about people who haven’t been
convicted of anything yet.”
A Warren spokesman told The
Epoch Times the senator had no
additional comment on the issue
or the status of Khater and Tanios
show an overriding interest exists
that supports filing under seal and
overcomes the right of public access
to the information, he ruled.
The hearing took place one day
after Martin, who took over the case
after the previous judge recused
himself, decided against halting
the audit. But he also said he could
stop it during the next hearing, stok-
ing further interest in the April 28
proceedings.
Defendants have asserted that
the coliseum and approximately
2.1 million ballots being reviewed,
along with machines used in the
election, are properly secured.
Former Republican Secretary of
State Ken Bennett, tapped by the
state Senate to be the audit liaison,
told reporters that the facility is un-
der armed guard 24 hours a day,
seven days a week.
Only he and one other person
have keys to unlock the contain-
ers the ballots are being held in
when they’re not being counted,

Durbin, who is also chairman of
the Senate Judiciary Committee,
recently told Politico that restric-
tive housing, or solitary confine-
ment, should only be used in “lim-
ited circumstances.”
He also is a co-sponsor of the
Solitary Confinement Reform
Act. During an April 15 Judiciary
Committee hearing, Durbin asked
Bureau of Prisons (BOP) Director
Michael Carvajal if he agreed with
a DOJ analysis that solitary con-
finement “can cause serious long-
lasting harm.”
Carvajal responded by calling
solitary “our jail within the jail,”
and “it should be a last resort, but
there are people because of cir-
cumstances, or behavior, violence,
things like that, there’s going to be
a need for it.”
Attorneys for Khater and Tanios
recently filed pleas with the U.S.
District Court for the District of
Columbia for their release, but
no decision has been rendered.
Tanios’s attorneys were unable to
complete their presentation.
Both pleas denied the gov-
ernment’s charges, claimed the
two men are no threat of physi-
cal violence or failure to appear
for their trials, and pointed to
claimed weaknesses in the gov-
ernment’s case.
“He never entered the Capitol
Building, never sought to threaten
members of Congress, and never
intended to forcibly interfere with
he added.
“We have to do everything we can
to protect the sanctity of the ballot
box. We’re never going to get 100
percent of the people to agree on
who should win the election, but we
should have as close as possible to
100 percent of the people who have
confidence that the election process
was done with integrity, and that’s
what we’re here to do,” Bennett said
during an April 27 press conference.
Critics including Arizona Secre-
tary of State Katie Hobbs have called
the audit unnecessary, pointing to
reviews done after the 2020 election
that uncovered little fraud.
“It’s clear now that there’s really
nothing valid that’s going to come
out of this exercise,” Hobbs, a Dem-
ocrat, said during an appearance on
MSNBC’s “Rachel Maddow Show”
on April 27.
“All this is going to do is continue
to undermine voters’ confidence in
the process.”

the peaceful transfer of power,”
the Khater plea said.
The Khater plea also noted that
“many defendants charged with
violent and/or aggressive behav-
ior on Jan. 6 have been released,
pending trial.”
The Tanios plea argued that “he
is an ordinary businessman with
a family, no felony convictions and
no history of violence, much less
a history of violence against law
enforcement officers. Most im-
portantly, the record doesn’t reflect
that Mr. Tanios has the capability of
dangerousness in the future.”
The Khater plea also pointed to
problems with the government’s
case, including that Khater “ap-
pearing” to hold the bear spray
canister is “less than definitive”
evidence that he wielded the spray
as a weapon.
In addition, the plea noted that
“proof that he took aim at offi-
cers is, at best, equivocal, given
the Government’s claim that he
stood as much as ‘eight feet away
from the officers’ and did not spray
directly at them but only ‘in the
officers’ direction.’”
The plea further argued that the
fact that, according to the govern-
ment, Khater was “moving his right
arm from side to side,” undercut-
ting the claim that he aimed at
Sicknick or other officers.

cused Democrats of trying to delay
the audit.
“They’re trying to throw as many
problems into the process that they
can to slow this down,” she said.
John Brakey, co-founder of Audit
USA and a progressive Democrat,
was appointed by Bennett as as-
sistant liaison to try to stem some
criticism from the left of the audit.
Brakey told reporters that the 2020
election was not audited before.
Even the hand-count audit of the
primary election only reviewed 1
percent, or 25 ballot batches, Brakey
noted, in contrast to the full review
currently going on.
That count took roughly 100
people appointed by county par-
ty chairs about a day and a half,
a county spokeswoman told The
Epoch Times via email.
Workers in the current audit have
counted about 100,000 ballots as of
April 27, according to Bennett.

Biden Administration Urges Supreme Court to Allow
Schools to Censor Student Expression Online

The Biden administration and a
Pennsylvania school district urged a
skeptical Supreme Court to let school
districts suppress free speech by stu-
dents on social media if they deem
it potentially disruptive to school
operations.
The case, Mahanoy Area School
District v. B.L., court file 20-255, was
heard April 28.
The Biden administration was rep-
resented in a 112-minute telephonic
hearing by Deputy Solicitor General
Malcolm L. Stewart.
The petitioner, the school district
in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, was
represented by Lisa S. Blatt. The stu-
dent involved in the case, known
in court documents as B.L., was
represented by David D. Cole, the
national legal director of the Ameri-
can Civil Liberties Union. B.L., or
Brandi Levy, was a minor at the time
the lawsuit was initiated and legal
files reduced her name to initials to
protect her identity.
In 2017, when Levy was 14 and a
freshman, she made the Mahanoy
Area High School junior varsity
cheerleading team, but as a sopho-
more, she failed to advance to the
varsity squad, remaining on junior
varsity, according to the district’s
petition.
On a Saturday when she wasn’t
present at school, she visited Snap-
chat, where messages automati-
cally disappear after 24 hours. She
posted a photograph of herself and
a friend, middle fingers extended,
alongside the caption, “[Expletive]
school [expletive] softball [expletive]
cheer [expletive] everything.”

The legal issue is whether the
Supreme Court’s 1969 ruling in
Tinker v. Des Moines Independent
Community School District applies
to student speech that occurs off-
campus. Long before the internet
became part of Americans’ every-

March, the committee unveiled
substantial upgrades to its eco-
nomic forecasts to reflect the
progress on vaccinations and the
strong fiscal policy support. De-
spite an acceleration in economic
recovery, the Fed officials stated
that the pandemic “continues to
weigh on the economy, and risks
to the economic outlook remain.”
Committee members unani-
mously agreed to maintain policy
measures to support the economy
and ensure the flow of credit to
households and businesses.
“While the recovery has pro-
gressed more quickly than gen-
erally expected, it remains uneven
and far from complete,” Chairman
Jerome Powell said at a post-meet-
ing press conference.
Powell noted the recent spike
in inflation and said it would rise
further before moderating.
The consumer price index
rose 0.6 percent in March, more
than expected, with half of the
increase driven by a 9.1 percent
jump in gasoline prices. Overall
day lives, the court held that public
school officials may “prescribe and
control conduct in the schools” and
discipline primary- and secondary-
school students for speech that
“would materially and substantially
interfere with the requirements of
appropriate discipline in the opera-
tion of the school.”
Some say Tinker is outdated.
Applying the precedent “results
in the erosion of parents’ rights to
direct the upbringing of their chil-
dren, undermines the role of law
enforcement, and encourages a
culture of snitching and the heck-
ler’s veto which is deeply contrary to
First Amendment values,” the Pacific
Legal Foundation, Cato Institute,
and author P.J. O’Rourke argued in
a friend-of-the-court brief.
“This Court should retire the Tin-
ker test in favor of a rule that permits
schools to regulate student speech
only when the speech occurs in a
place or during a time controlled
and supervised by school staff, and
only when necessary to address ob-
jective disruption of the learning
environment.”
Levy sued, and both the U.S. dis-
trict court and a majority of judges
on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
3rd Circuit held the suspension vio-
lated the First Amendment. The 3rd
Circuit found that “Tinker does not
apply to off-campus speech—that
is, speech that is outside school-
owned, -operated, or -supervised
channels and that is not reasonably
interpreted as bearing the school’s
imprimatur.”
But during oral arguments, Blatt
said the Tinker ruling should apply
off-campus because “speech can
cause on-campus disruption.”
“Tinker applies off-campus only
when the student targets both a
school audience and a school topic,
and more broadly, this court can
clarify Tinker’s reach both on-and
off-campus.”
Chief Justice John Roberts asked
what happens if a student is carry-
ing a sign off-campus that says he or
she doesn’t approve a school bond

pace since August 2018.
The economy would continue to
see “upward pressure on prices
from the rebound in spending
as the economy continues to re-
open,” Powell said, “particularly
if supply bottlenecks limit how
quickly production can respond
in the near term.”
“However, these one-time in-
creases in prices are likely to have
only transitory effects on infla-
tion,” he said, adding that these
spikes would not lead to persis-
tently higher year-over-year in-
flation.
Economists, including Larry
Summers, the former Treasury
secretary of President Bill Clin-
ton, raised concerns earlier about
Biden’s $1.9 trillion relief package
and warned that excessive govern-
ment spending could overheat the
economy and fuel inflation.

A lawyer for Rudy Giuliani said fed-
eral investigators executed a search
warrant at the home of the former
New York City mayor and attorney
to former President Donald Trump
and seized electronic devices.
Giuliani’s attorney Robert Costel-
lo told Fox News that seven FBI
agents arrived at his Manhattan
apartment at 6 a.m. on April 28
and remained there for about two
hours. They seized laptops, cell
phones, and other electronic de-
vices, Costello said.
“This is totally unnecessary,”
Costello told Fox News, adding
that the raid was carried out to
“make him look like he’s some sort
of criminal.”
The New York Times was the first
to report on the search, claiming
that it may have at least partially
stemmed from Giuliani’s dealings
in Ukraine. Giuliani wasn’t arrested
or charged with a crime, and it’s not
clear exactly why the former mayor’s
house was searched.
“What they did today was legal
thuggery,” Costello told the paper.
“Why would you do this to anyone,
let alone someone who was the as-
sociate attorney general, United
States attorney, the mayor of New
York City, and the personal lawyer
to the 45th president of the United
States.”
Costello also told the Wall Street
Journal that in recent years, he had
offered to answer investigators’
questions, but they declined.
“It’s like I’m talking to a wall,” he
said.
FBI officials and Giuliani’s team
didn’t respond to requests by The
Epoch Times for comment by press
time.
In late 2019, amid the first House
impeachment inquiry against
Trump about a conversation he had
with Ukraine’s president in July of
that year, prosecutors charged two
alleged former associates to Gi-
uliani, Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman,
with unrelated crimes regarding al-
leged campaign finance violations.
On Jan. 20 of last year, Giuliani ap-
peared on Fox News’ “The Ingra-
ham Angle” and said he’s no longer
close to Parnas, a former client, and
claimed that Parnas was lying about
some of his claims.
One example, according to Gi-
uliani, was a claim that Parnas met
with Trump at the White House dur-
ing Hanukkah and was deputized
by the president.
“The meeting never took place,”
Giuliani told Fox News at the time.
“The records indicate that it never
took place. He lied. The man is a
demonstrated liar.
“Lev is someone I was close to. Ob-
viously, I was misled by him. I feel
very bad. I still feel sorry for him. I’m
not going to respond to him for each
and every one of the misrepresenta-
tions he’s made, because there were
so many,” he said. “If I’m called as a
witness, I’m prepared to do it.”
Before that, Giuliani, who was
Trump’s personal attorney at the
time, told CNN in 2019 that he asked
Ukrainian officials to look into then-
candidate Joe Biden before he noted
that he “asked them to look into the
allegations that related to my cli-
ent [Trump], which, tangentially,
involved Joe Biden in a massive
bribery scheme, not unlike what
he did in China.”
“I asked the Ukraine to investigate
the allegations that there was inter-
ference in the election of 2016 by the
Ukrainians for the benefit of Hillary
Clinton,” Giuliani said.

home of Trump’s former lawyer Mi-
chael Cohen the former president
said it was part of a “witch hunt”
against him on behalf of the fed-
eral law enforcement agency. Co-
hen was eventually convicted and
sentenced, spending more than a
year at a federal prison near Otis-
ville, New York.
Trump has long said that the
Russia inquiry and impeachment
against him were part of a politically
motivated campaign to undermine
his presidency and the legitimacy of
his 2016 election win.

A defendant charged with il-
legally reentering the United
States after being deported isn’t
automatically entitled to argue
the removal was invalid even if he
was removed for a crime that was
subsequently deemed not to be a
removable offense, the Supreme
Court heard.
The case, United States v. Palo-
mar-Santiago, court file 20-437,
was heard April 27.
The Biden administration,
which inherited the case from
the Trump administration, was
represented in the 50-minute
telephonic hearing by Erica L.
Ross from the U.S. Department
of Justice (DOJ). The respon-
dent, Refugio Palomar-Santia-
go, was represented by Bradley
N. Garcia.
Immigration law enforcement
was a priority for the Trump ad-
ministration.
The DOJ said in October 2019
that U.S. attorneys that fiscal year
prosecuted the highest number
of immigration-related offenses
since record-keeping began more
than 25 years earlier. These fig-
ures successfully reversed the
trend in previous years of de-
clining prosecutions for felony
illegal reentry defendants, mis-
demeanor improper entry defen-
dants, and felony alien smuggling
defendants.
In fiscal 2019, 25,426 aliens
were charged with illegal entry,
a jump of 50 percent from 16,965
two years before.
In the case at hand, Palomar-
Santiago, a Mexican national,
was granted permanent resident
status in 1990. He lost that status
in 1991 following a driving under
the substantive standard for con-
ducting queries; (2) queries that
are designed to retrieve evidence
of crime that is not foreign-intel-
ligence information; and (3) re-
cordkeeping and documentation
requirements,” Boasberg wrote.
The government also self-
reported numerous incidents
where queries involving Amer-
icans were designed to return
evidence of a crime completely
unrelated to foreign intelligence
without getting an order from
the court. The same issues were
found the previous year, “which
suggests that similar violations ...
likely have occurred across the
Bureau.”
Boasberg’s overview of the FBI’s
use of FISA was written on Nov.
18, 2020, but just released to the
public this week.
FBI workers have repeatedly
abused the system that permits
it to look at intelligence garnered
under FISA, previous reports and
analyses have shown.
The court found in 2018 that
bureau  personnel improperly
the influence (DUI) conviction,
which, at the time, was deemed
a crime of violence and therefore
an aggravated felony under the
Immigration and Nationality
Act (INA) that warranted depor-
tation. He was deported in 1998.
In 2004, the Supreme Court
ruled in Leocal v. Ashcroft that
DUI crimes that lack mens rea,
or criminal intent, or merely
require negligence for a convic-
tion, aren’t “crimes of violence”
that require the convicted alien
to be deported.
In 2017, Palomar-Santiago was
present in the United States again
and was indicted for reentering
illegally after being deported, a
more serious offense than first-
time unlawful entry. He fought
the indictment, arguing the
crime for which he was originally
deported was no longer a deport-
able offense and that his removal
in 1998 was therefore fundamen-
tally unfair.
The U.S. District Court agreed
and dismissed the indictment.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the
9th Circuit affirmed the ruling
May 14, 2020, holding that the
government may not prosecute
for reentry where a previous re-
moval order was invalid.
During oral arguments on April
27, Garcia told the Supreme Court
that his client “was unlawfully
deported.”
“Regardless of the DUI con-
viction, everyone agrees that
that is not and never was a basis
to remove a lawful permanent
resident from the United States.
So this order is substantively
invalid.”
Garcia told the court the law
here is confusing at times.
This case is “in an area where

searched an expansive foreign
surveillance database for tens
of thousands of phone numbers
and email addresses that in-
cluded those of Americans. Ad-
ditionally, a watchdog review of
warrant applications to spy on
Carter Page, a former adviser to
former President Donald Trump,
uncovered 17 significant errors or
omissions.
Boasberg eventually ordered
the FBI to revamp its FISA proce-
dures, and the bureau has made
changes, such as adding to war-
rant application forms whether
the surveillance target was a
government source, revamping
training on how to use the sys-
tem, and altering a checklist used
to vet confidential sources.
Updated targeting procedures
were submitted to the court last
year.
In an emailed statement sent
to The Epoch Times, a senior FBI
official said the bureau imple-
mented a number of changes
by December 2019, including
deploying updated training to
everybody concedes that the le-
gal doctrines are mystifying and
opaque,” he said.
Speaking for the government,
Ross told the justices that “Con-
gress stated that a noncitizen may
not challenge the validity of his
removal order unless he dem-
onstrates that he exhausted any
available administrative reme-
dies, that the removal proceed-
ings improperly deprived him of
the right to judicial review, and
that the entry of the order was
fundamentally unfair.”

Palomar-Santiago, whose ar-
guments now “would create a
significant loophole in the [INA]
statute,” should have previously
made the case in court, as other
individuals did, that his prior
offense was not an aggravated
felony, instead of raising it as a de-
fense to the illegal reentry charge,
Ross said.
Given that the government
concedes the deportation or-
der against Palomar-Santiago
wouldn’t today lead to his re-
moval from the country, Justice
Clarence Thomas asked Ross why
the government was still “pursu-
ing this case.”
“We agree ... that under this
court’s decision in Leocal ... DUI
is not an aggravated felony,” Ross
replied, “but ... we disagree that
that makes it a legal nullity that
respondent was simply entitled
to ignore. We think respondent
still had to go through the regu-
lar channels to challenge his re-
moval order.”

the newly released report oc-
curred prior to implementation
of the FBI’s changes, the official
said. Boasberg said as much in
the report.
Absent evidence to the contrary
and under the unique circum-
stances stemming from the CO-
VID-19 pandemic, he continues
to determine that the FBI’s pro-
cedures meet lawful and Fourth
Amendment requirements, the
judge decided.
“While the Court is concerned
about the apparent widespread
violations of the querying stan-
dard ... it lacks sufficient infor-
mation at this time to assess
the adequacy of the FBI system
changes and training, post-im-
plementation,” he wrote.
The bureau noted that Boasberg
was overall supportive of the FBI
and approved the bureau’s sub-
mission for reauthorization to
continue using the FISA system.
Boasberg, an Obama nomi-
nee, in January sentenced for-
mer FBI attorney Kevin Cline-
smith—who admitted to altering
an email to obscure the fact that
Page was a CIA asset—to proba-
tion, with no jail time.
The top Democratic and Repub-
lican members on the House and
Senate Intelligence Committees
didn’t immediately respond to re-
quests by The Epoch Times for
comment on the newly released
report.
Jake Laperruque, senior coun-
sel for the Project on Government
Oversight, wrote on Twitter that
the new documents show that
the FBI has been conducting
so-called backdoor searches on
people “for domestic policing”
without receiving the mandated
approval from the court.
“Essentially, this means the FBI
was able to conduct warrantless
domestic searches without the
FISA Court approval they were
supposed to get, at best because
personnel were sloppy, at worst
because using the default set-
tings gave plausible deniability
for abuse,” he said.
“Someone who unlawfully re-
enters the United States, despite
an extant removal order that he
never challenged, has taken the
law into his own hands and just
shown a disrespect for the law
and for the legal process, that is
subject to punishment.”
After Thomas asked Ross if
there were “any constitutional
concerns lurking in this case,”
and Ross replied in the negative,
Justice Sonia Sotomayor told the
lawyer, “You don’t see a constitu-
tional issue here, but I do.”
Ross said: “It’s clear on this
record that there was an oppor-
tunity for judicial review and for
administrative exhaustion.”
Sotomayor replied, “The real-
ity is that when this conviction
happened, neither this circuit
nor any court had yet ruled in
his favor.”
The Supreme Court ruled in
Yakus v. U.S. (1944), Ross said,
that “no principle of law or provi-
sion of the Constitution precludes
Congress from making criminal

order by someone who has failed
to avail himself [of] an adequate
separate procedure for adjudica-
tion of its validity.”
“And I think that’s precisely
what respondent had here in the
first instance.”
Chief Justice John Roberts told
Garcia “there are a lot of areas
where ... the door closes, and
you lose the right to go back and
challenge prior determinations.”
He said, “You seem to be arguing
that whenever there is some kind
of change or clarification in the
law, you do go back and reopen
everything.”
Garcia said that wasn’t the case
here.
“I think it’s important to keep
in mind ... that the government is
coming to court and ... looking to
impose a new and further crimi-
nal punishment on the basis of
an order that it knows is invalid,”
he said.

his law license suspended for a
year beginning on May 28 after
admitting to physical and emo-
tional abuse of three women, ac-
cording to a court filing.
Schneiderman resigned from
the post in May 2018 after The

ticle detailing allegations made
against him by multiple women.
The Nassau County District At-
torney’s Office declined to pros-
ecute him six months later, citing
statutes of limitations and other
matters.
The one-year suspension was
agreed upon by Schneiderman as
part of disciplinary proceedings
before the Attorney Grievance
Committee for the First Judicial
Department. As part of the deal,
Schneiderman admitted to the
physical abuse. The punishment
against him was softened due to
lack of prior offenses and his hav-
ing committed to mental health
and alcoholism treatment.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has
announced that a statewide cur-

month for both indoor and outdoor
dining areas.
The 12 a.m. curfew for outdoor
dining areas will be lifted on May
17, while the 12 a.m. indoor service
curfew will end two weeks later on
May 31, according to an April 28
statement from the governor’s office.
The curfew for food and beverage
services was recently extended by
one hour, from 11 p.m. to midnight.
Cuomo also said the 1 a.m. curfew
for catered events where attendees
have provided proof of immuniza-
tion or a recent negative CCP virus
test will be lifted starting May 17,
with the curfew for all catered events
set to be lifted on May 31.
“Catered events can resume at resi-
dences beginning May 3 above the
State’s residential gathering limit of
10 people indoors and 25 people out-
doors,” according to the press release.
And starting on May 3, seating at
bars will be allowed again in the city,
consistent with the food services
guidance in effect statewide.
“We know the COVID positivity
rate is a function of our behavior,
and over the last year, New Yorkers
have remained disciplined and con-
tinued with the practices we know
work to stop the spread of the virus,”
Cuomo said.
“Everything we’ve been doing is
working—all the arrows are point-
ing in the right direction, and now
we’re able to increase economic ac-
tivity even more. Lifting these re-
strictions for restaurants, bars, and
catering companies will allow these
businesses that have been devas-
tated by the pandemic to begin to
recover as we return to a new normal
in a post-pandemic world.”

industry, which was hit hard by the
lockdowns.
Finally, several other industries
will also have their capacities in-
creased starting on May 15 after
proving they can safely reopen in
accordance with the state’s CCP
virus health and safety guidelines.
Gyms and fitness centers outside
New York City will have their capac-
ity increased to 50 percent from 33
percent, casinos will be increased to
50 percent from 25 percent, and of-
fices will have a capacity increase to
75 percent from 50 percent.

McConnell’s comments on Re-
publicans being unlikely to back
stand-alone legislation echoed re-
marks made by Sen. Lindsey Gra-
ham (R-S.C.), who, along with Sen.
Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), introduced
the Dream Act of 2021 in Febru-
ary, proposing a pathway to lawful
permanent residency and Ameri-
can citizenship to people without
lawful status who were brought to
the United States as children.
“For years, I have supported a
solution for the Dream Act popu-
lation who were brought to the
United States by their parents as
minors,” Graham said in a state-
ment. “I do not believe this legis-
lation will pass and be signed into
law as a stand-alone measure. I be-
lieve it will be a starting point for us
to find bipartisan breakthroughs
providing relief to the Dreamers
and also repairing a broken im-
migration system,” Graham said,
adding that he looks forward to
working with Durbin and others
to “find a way forward.”

to Protect Unborn Children
With Genetic Abnormalities

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed
a measure into law on April 27 that
seeks to protect unborn children
from abortions performed strictly
on the basis of genetic disorders,
such as Down syndrome.
The law, which was approved
by the state legislature last week,
makes it a crime for medical pro-
viders to terminate a pregnancy
knowing that the procedure was
sought solely because of a genetic
abnormality of a child, except in a
medical emergency. The measure
also prohibits public colleges and
universities from performing an
abortion, forbids mail delivery of
abortion-inducing medication,
and allows the father or maternal
grandparents of an unborn child
who was aborted due to a genetic
disorder to sue on behalf of an un-
born child.
“Every life holds immeasur-
able value—regardless of genetic
makeup. Today, I signed legisla-
tion to prioritize life in our preborn
children and protect those with ge-
netic abnormalities,” Ducey said
in a statement. “Arizona remains
among the top pro-life states in

ers last week that he thought that
any agreement on the DACA issue
would need a border security com-
ponent to get enough GOP buy-in
to clear the Senate filibuster.
McConnell’s remarks also come
as the GOP has intensified its criti-
cism of the Biden administration
for its handling of the border
surge, which in the month of
March saw Border Patrol appre-
hend 172,000 illegal immigrants,
the most in a single month in 20
years, according to statistics re-
leased on April 8 by U.S. Customs
and Border Protection.
A coalition of Republican sena-
tors who recently visited the south-
ern border wrote a letter to Presi-
dent Joe Biden on April 26, urging
him to take swift action and re-

The measure, dubbed SB 1457,
also requires a doctor or abortionist
to complete an affidavit stating that
he or she isn’t performing an abor-
tion because of the child’s genetic
abnormality. It also requires the
abortionist to inform the mother
that it’s unlawful to perform an
abortion due to the child’s race, sex,
or genetic abnormality, and report
any violations of the statute.
The move to enact the law was
celebrated by various pro-life and
conservative groups including the
Center for Arizona Policy, which
had argued that the measure pre-
vents discrimination against chil-
dren diagnosed with a disability
prior to birth.
“Arizona women will be ensured
commonsense safeguards if they
choose the abortion pill. Arizona
taxpayers will not be forced to sup-
port abortions at public colleges
and universities, and the laws of Ar-
izona will be interpreted to value all
human life,” the group’s president,
Cathi Herrod, said in a statement.

argued that the burgeoning crisis
is a result of Biden’s move to over-
turn several Trump-era immigra-
tion policies that helped curbed the
flow of illegal border crossings. This
includes his predecessor’s corner-

which effectively ended the prob-
lematic “catch and release” policy,
significantly stemming the surge of
illegal immigrants that were seen
at the southern border in 2019.
The Biden administration has
repeatedly said it inherited a bro-
ken immigration system that will
take some time to fix, while blam-
ing the border surge on seasonal
factors and on dire conditions in
immigrants’ home countries. Part

argued that the bill is overly
broad and intrusive and could
potentially undermine a woman’s
ability to access an abortion as
allowed under Supreme Court

The Democrat lawmakers also
took issue that the language of the
bill confers “personhood” to an
unborn child, meaning that he or
she would be granted all rights,
privileges, and immunities of any
other citizen.
This means “any harm to the fetus
may carry criminal or civil sanc-
tions never before contemplated,”
the lawmakers argued.
“Although the bill states the per-
sonhood status must be consistent
with Supreme Court precedent, it
is not hard to see how this provi-
sion could be easily interpreted to
erase the universe of protections
afforded to women under law of the
land since Roe v. Wade and Planned
Parenthood v. Casey.”
State Rep. Diego Espinoza of Tolle-
son was among Democrats who la-
mented the governor’s action.
“Gov. Ducey’s decision to sign
SB1457 is not pro-life. It is anti-
families, anti-woman, and anti-
doctor. I’m disappointed to see
Arizona moving in this direction,
ignoring the needs and desires of
doctors, women, and families for an
extreme political agenda,” he wrote
in a statement on Twitter.
The 6th Circuit Court of Ap-
peals earlier this month ruled in
a 9–7 en banc decision to reverse
a lower court ruling that blocked
a similar law that seeks to pro-
hibit Down syndrome abortions,
known as the “Down Syndrome
Non-Discrimination Act,” from
being enforced.
The 2017 law prohibits a doctor
from performing an abortion if
he or she has knowledge that the
mother’s reason for aborting the
pregnancy is due to a prenatal
Down syndrome diagnosis. Doc-
tors who violate the law could be
punished criminally and result
in the revocation of their medi-
cal license.

Jen Psaki  acknowledged last
week that the administration had
not anticipated the influx of ille-
gal border crossings following its
policy changes, but she continued
to downplay the severity of the situ-
ation by insisting that the situation
at the border was not a “crisis.” Her
comments came after Biden, in a
rare admission, used the word “cri-
sis” to refer to the surge of unac-
companied minors at the border.
The DACA program, meanwhile,
has for years been a hot-button is-
sue. It was created by an executive
order signed in 2012 by former
President Barack Obama, follow-
ing failed immigration reform ne-

kas announced new guidance on
April 27 to limit the arrest of illegal
immigrants in or near courthous-
es, reversing a Trump-era policy
that expanded such arrests.
“Ensuring that individuals have
access to the courts advances the
fair administration of justice, pro-
motes safety for crime victims, and
helps to guarantee equal protec-
tion under the law,” Mayorkas said
in a statement.
“The expansion of civil immi-
gration arrests at courthouses
during the prior administration
had a chilling effect on individu-
als’ willingness to come to court
or work cooperatively with law
enforcement,” he said. “Today’s
guidance is the latest step in our
efforts to focus our civil immi-
gration enforcement resources
on threats to homeland security
and public safety.”
Under former President Donald
Trump, U.S. Immigration and Cus-
toms Enforcement (ICE) issued a
directive in January 2018 regarding
civil immigration enforcement ac-
tions inside federal, state, and local
courthouses. ICE stated at the time
that such arrests “are wholly con-
sistent with longstanding law en-
forcement practices, nationwide,”
and could reduce safety risks be-
cause individuals entering court-
houses “are typically screened by
law enforcement personnel.”
DHS’s new policy stipulates that
the arrests can only be done un-
der limited circumstances, such
as situations that pose a national
security issue, or imminent risk of
death or physical harm, or in hot
pursuit of someone who’s a threat
to public safety, or imminent risk of
destruction of evidence material to
a criminal case.
The new guidance also applies
to U.S. Customs and Border Pro-
tection.

Trump tried to end the DACA

provide Congress a “window of
opportunity” to act on the issue,
but bitter partisan divisions over
immigration meant that never
happened.
DACA defenders say that the re-
cipients should not be faulted for
their parents’ decision to violate
U.S. immigration laws to bring
them into the country. They argue
that there would be a number of
social and economic costs should
the program end. They say many of
these recipients have contributed
to the U.S. economy, and remov-
ing the program would threaten
the nation’s future workforce and
impose massive costs to employers
who currently employ these people.
For DACA opponents, the case
represents an overreach of execu-
tive authority and a usurpation of
Congress’s lawmaking powers.
They have argued that Obama
exercised unlawful executive au-
thority to create the program and
that only Congress can enact such
a policy under its authority over
immigration matters.
Opponents have also taken is-
sue with the fact that DACA grants
benefits to these recipients ahead
of other immigrants who are toil-
ing through legal channels to gain
immigration and naturalization in
the United States.

Stephen Miller, a former senior
adviser to Trump, criticized the
new policy, saying it will release
huge numbers of criminals while
putting ICE officers in unsafe
situations.
“Once more, [President Joe]
Biden privileges the convenience
of criminal aliens over the lives
of US citizens,” Miller wrote on
Twitter. “Making matters worse,
I’m told the policy also applies to
immigration courts—further en-
suring that non-detained aliens
who lose in court will never be
removed.”
“Angel dad” Dan Ferguson,
whose 28-year-old daughter,
Amanda Weyant-Ferguson, was
killed in a hit-and-run by an illegal
alien in 2018, also expressed anger
over this new policy.
“My daughter would be alive to-
day if a judge would have allowed
ICE to do their job,” Ferguson wrote
on Twitter. “Instead, he was re-
leased and later killed my girl while
drinking and driving. When will
enough be enough.”
The DHS didn’t immediately re-
spond to a request from The Epoch
Times for comment.
This isn’t the first time the
Biden administration has lim-
ited ICE’s ability to remove illegal
immigrants.
On Jan. 20, the day Biden took
office, his acting DHS secretary,
David Pekoske, signed a memoran-
dum directing DHS components
to review and reset enforcement
policies while canceling most of
Trump’s immigration enforcement
policies. The memo prevented ICE
from removing the vast majority of
criminal illegal immigrants.
In the fiscal year 2018 report,
ICE pointed out that 66 percent
of the aliens arrested were con-
victed criminals, and 21 percent
had pending criminal charges.
That year, ICE arrested 138,117
aliens with criminal histories
(convicted criminal and pend-
ing criminal charges).

The jury that found former Minneapolis
police officer Derek Chauvin guilty in the
death of George Floyd was at peace with
their verdict, according to the first juror
who deliberated at the trial to reveal his
identity and speak publicly about the ex-
perience.
“After we deliberated and we had to do
some explaining to a few people, breaking
it down a little bit further, everybody was
on the same page,” Brandon Mitchell, a
31-year-old high school basketball coach,
said on the “Get Up! Mornings With Erica
Campbell” podcast.
Last week, the jury found Chauvin guilty
of second- and third-degree murder and
second-degree manslaughter in Floyd’s
death outside a convenience store in Min-
neapolis last Memorial Day. After closing
arguments concluded on April 19, jurors
reached their verdict the following day, after
about eight hours of deliberations.

‘What about this, what about that.’ So we
sat in the room and argued for a few hours

prosecutors said.

adviser in the Office of Educational Tech-
nology, was arrested April 27 on charges of

decision, convicting Chauvin on one or
two counts and acquitting him on one or
two others.
Chauvin, whose lawyer hasn’t responded
to requests for comment, now faces up to
40 years in prison. He’s being held in isola-
tion at the state’s only maximum-security
wire fraud, money laundering, and making
false statements to a financial institution.
Federal prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s
Office for the Southern District of New York
allege that he used more than half of the
money to maintain his bank account above
a threshold that enabled him to get better
interest rates for a mortgage of his multimil-
lion-dollar Manhattan apartment.
“As alleged, Seth Andrew abused his posi-
tion as a founder of a charter school network
to steal from the very same schools he helped
create,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Audrey
Strauss said.
Andrew is the founder of a prominent
chain of charter schools based in New York
City named Democracy Prep Public Schools,
which he founded in 2005. The chain now
operates 21 public charter schools across the
country, educating 6,500 students.
Andrew will enter a plea of not guilty in a
Manhattan federal court, attorney Michael
Yaeger told The Epoch Times via email.

ter, until sentencing in June.
Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill,
who presided over the trial, recently or-
dered restrictions on disclosure of juror
information to continue until further no-
tice. But he left open the option for jurors
to identify themselves.
Lisa Christensen, one of two alternates
who was dismissed before deliberations,
previously spoke to the media about the
case.
In the new interviews, Mitchell said
that he became exhausted from having to
watch video footage of Chauvin kneeling on
Floyd’s neck and back and began turning
away so as to not watch when the footage
was shown during the trial.
He also recounted being struck by the tes-
timony of different people, noting the mo-
ment that Floyd’s brother Philonise Floyd
took the stand and told jurors about their
childhood together.
Asked by Campbell if he had a message to
people about accepting jury duty, he add-
ed: “It’s just important. If we want to see
some change and want to see some things
going differently, we got to get out there and
get in these avenues and these rooms to try
to spark some change.”

Idaho Gov. Brad Little signed a bill on
April 27 that bans abortions after the
heartbeat of the unborn child is detected.
“The bill bans abortions after a baby’s
heartbeat is detected, around five or six
weeks after conception. The legislation
makes exceptions for medical emergen-
cies and pregnancies that are the result
of rape or incest,” Little, a Republican,
wrote on Twitter.

interests in life, health,
and well-being that
should be protected.
Idaho House Bill 366
The law, approved by the state’s Repub-
lican-led Senate last week on a 25–7 vote,
makes providing an abortion to a wom-
an whose unborn child has a detectable
heartbeat punishable by up to five years
in prison. The law also allows women to
sue the providers.
“The life of each human being begins at
fertilization, and unborn children have
interests in life, health, and well-being
that should be protected,” the law states.
“The fetal heartbeat, when detected, pres-
ents a clearly identifiable point at which
the preborn child in the womb has a
greater than ninety-five percent chance
of survival when carried to term.”
The bill has exceptions for rape, incest,
or medical emergency. The exception for
rape and incest would likely be impossible
for many women to meet, opponents say,
because Idaho law prevents the release
of police reports in active investigations.
“This is good legislation that gives a pre-
born child the same rights as a mother,”
said the bill’s sponsor, Republican Sen.
Patti Anne Lodge.
The bill contains a “trigger provision,”
which means it wouldn’t go into effect
unless a federal appeals court somewhere
in the country upholds similar legislation
from another state. Similar bills have been
passed in several other states, and some
are already being litigated. Earlier this
year, a federal court temporarily blocked
a fetal heartbeat bill in South Carolina.
Supporters of the legislation say they
would like it challenged in the 9th U.S.
Circuit Court of Appeals and then decided
at the U.S. Supreme Court, which has a
6–3 conservative majority after former
President Donald Trump appointed three
conservative justices.
Ultimately, backers would like to see the
proposed Idaho law play a role in over-
turning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme
Court decision legalizing abortion na-
tionwide. A reversal of Roe would mean
abortion policy would revert to the states.

authorities once it learned about the un-
authorized withdrawals.
“Seth left our network in 2013,” Trivers
stated. “His alleged actions are a profound
betrayal of all that we stand for and to you
and your children, the scholars and families
that we serve. To be clear, at no time did the
alleged crimes pose any risk to our students,
staff or operations in any way.”
“The network’s finances remain strong, and
at no time did any of the activity by Seth An-
drew have any adverse effect on our scholars
or the functioning of our schools,” she added.
“Locking into the lowest interest rate when
applying for a loan is certainly the objective
of every home buyer, but when you don’t
have the necessary funds to put down, and
you steal the money from your former em-
ployer to make up the difference, saving
money in interest is likely to be the least of

North Carolina Judge Delays Public Release
of Footage of Police-Involved Shooting

on April 28 against the immedi-
ate public release of body camera
footage in the officer-involved
shooting death of Andrew Brown Jr.
Brown’s family attorneys, Black
Lives Matter activists, and a co-
alition of media outlets have de-
manded the release of five body
camera videos that purport to
show deputies fatally shooting
Brown while he was behind the
wheel of his vehicle last week.
Foster ruled that the
videos won’t be re-
leased to the public
for at least 30 days.
Judge Jeffrey Foster said that af-
ter hearing lawyers’ arguments
from county officials and media
outlets that sought the release of
the footage, the videos contain
material “of a highly sensitive and
personal nature” and the release
would “create a serious threat to
the fair, impartial, and orderly ad-
ministration of justice.”
Foster ruled that Brown’s family
will be allowed to see all of the vid-
eos, but they won’t be released to
the public for at least 30 days, and
no longer than 45 days. Brown’s
son Khalil Ferebee, his immedi-
ate family, and a licensed North
Carolina lawyer will be allowed to
see all the videos—but the judge
said they need to be redacted to
Washington Post Stops Presidential Fact-
Check Database After 100 Days of Biden

The Washington Post announced
that it would stop using its presi-
dential fact-checking database af-
ter 100 days of President Joe Biden’s
administration.
“Here’s the Biden database—
which we do not plan to extend
beyond 100 days,” Washington Post
fact-check editor and writer Glenn
Kessler wrote on Twitter. “I have
learned my lesson.”
In elaborating on the “lesson” he
had “learned,” Kessler said: “Who
knows what the next four years will
bring. We have fact-checked Biden
rigorously and will continue to do
so.” He then claimed that former
President Donald Trump made a
large number of false claims during
his administration.
Kessler said the Post will “keep
doing fact checks” but won’t use a
database to contain them.
He then noted that Biden has
made fewer public appearances
and has held fewer press confer-
ences than his predecessor. Biden
also spends less time using social
media and namely, Twitter, which
was Trump’s favored social media
platform before he was banned
earlier this year.
The Post and Kessler drew sig-
nificant blowback on Twitter for
what some described as a double
standard.
“The Biden presidency is over.
Rest easy,” media critic Stephen
L. Miller wrote sarcastically in re-
sponse. “What an incredible 100
days of presidency.”
Kessler, meanwhile, received
criticism for a so-called fact check
on Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-S.C.) family
history.
“Tim Scott often talks about his
grandfather and cotton. There’s
more to that tale,” he wrote last
week in what some described
as a “hit piece.” It came as Scott
was named to deliver the GOP’s
response to Biden’s first address
to the Joint Session of Congress
on April 28.
“Scott’s ‘cotton to Congress’
line is missing some nuance, but
we are not going to rate his state-
hide officers’ identities.
“While the bodycam footage
only shows one perspective for a
limited period of time, it might
give the public some ability to un-
derstand what happened that day,”
Mike Cox, attorney for Pasquotank
County, told the judge. Cox said
he favors the release of the video
to the media and Brown’s family,
adding that it won’t impede inves-
tigations by the FBI and other law
enforcement agencies.
Pasquotank County District At-
torney Andrew Womble argued
against releasing the footage, say-
ing that the release would hinder a
fair trial, risk deputies’ safety, and
affect investigations. The video, he
said, should be released as evi-
dence if and when there is a trial.
H.P. Williams, an attorney on be-
half of unnamed clients, said the
footage shouldn’t be released but
said he wouldn’t oppose releasing
the video to the family as long as
officers’ faces are redacted so they
can’t be identified.
“The officers are very distraught
over what happened. They feel for

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-

released from jail pending trial.
A judge on April 27 deemed
Richard Barnett not danger-
ous enough to stay in jail as he
awaits trial for participating in the
breach. Barnett will be released
to his home in Arkansas with a
GPS monitor.
Judge Christopher “Casey” Coo-
per, in announcing him to home
confinement, said, “The notion
that the events of Jan. 6 were a le-
gitimate or excusable social pro-
test against ruling elites or worse
yet a reaction to some people in
society feeling that they have been
unfairly scapegoated for racism is,
in a word, absurd,” according to
reporters who were at the hearing.
Cooper, in releasing Barnett, said
he should consider it “a test.”
Barnett has been charged with
a felony count of entering the
Capitol with a dangerous weap-
on and is accused of bringing a
stun gun into the building. He
also faces misdemeanor counts
of unlawful entry to a restricted
building, disorderly conduct,
and theft.
Prosecutors have said he could
face six years in prison if convict-
ed on all the counts. Barnett has
pleaded not guilty.

Leaked Document Shows How
Beijing Woos Foreign Firms to Prop
Up Free-Trade Zones

The Chinese regime has been roll-
ing out free-trade zones (FTZs) in
recent years in an effort to entice
foreign investments in the country.
Since its initial effort in Shanghai
in 2013, China has now expanded
to about 20 FTZs.
A leaked document recently ob-
tained by The Epoch Times reveals
how the Chinese Communist Party
(CCP) went about wooing foreign
companies for its FTZ at Hainan,
an island province located in the
South China Sea.
Hainan, which is roughly the
size of Maryland, was designated
an FTZ by Chinese leader Xi Jin-
ping in April 2018. That month,

to build a trumped-up fraud case
against Zhang Chunlei, the pastor
of a Christian house church who
was illegally detained last month.
Chinese rights lawyer Sui Muqing
told The Epoch Times that Zhang’s
wife, Yang Aiqing, was taken away
by police around noon on April 21
after being subpoenaed, along
with Zhang’s son and younger
brother. Zhang’s son and brother
were released the same day, while
Yang was detained in handcuffs
and shackles for 24 hours before
her release, Sui says.
At great personal risk, Sui and oth-
er human rights lawyers who are
concerned about the case visited
Yang on April 24 and learned from
her that she had been interrogated
for several hours.

Among the recommended mea-
sures were how the Hainan govern-
ment should become an important
technological hub with its own
management system to welcome
foreign high-tech experts, and sup-
port Beijing’s “Belt and Road Ini-
tiative” (BRI, also known as “One
Belt, One Road”) and “military-civil
fusion” (MCF) policies.
These two CCP policies have
drawn international criticism in re-
cent years, with critics arguing that
China’s BRI—an investment ini-

The U.S. State Department has
warned on its website that Beijing’s
MCF strategy—which calls for the
leveraging of commercial technol-
ogies for military development—
involves intellectual property theft.
The State Council’s guideline
concluded by emphasizing the
importance of the Hainan gov-
ernment to “strengthen the Party’s
leadership” in all aspects of works
in the province.

police station to inquire about the

Times reporter has been tracked.
Two days earlier on April 24, a
self-described delivery man en-
tered Liang’s apartment building
after registering his name as “Liao”
at the entrance.
The man went upstairs and
knocked on the door of Liang’s
home, claiming that a foreign
friend surnamed Cheng had en-
trusted him to deliver a big parcel
that was downstairs.
Liang replied that she had no
such a friend.
The man asked, “Aren’t you Sarah
Liang?”
Liang continued to ask him
who he was, what was his friend
Cheng’s phone number, and what
the parcel was.
The man kept stumbling and
couldn’t explain himself.
“Are you a CCP spy?” Liang

For example, the document said it

uct testing and certification com-
panies create offices in the FTZ to
“create a business environment
that complies with internationally
accepted rules.”
Gu Gang and Sun Shiwen, who
were both deputy mayors in Haikou
at the time, were assigned to reach
out to the “Big Four” accounting
firms—UK-based PwC and Ernst &
Young, Netherlands-based KPMG,
and New York-based Deloitte—ac-
cording to the document.
Another deputy mayor, Ju Lei,
was tasked to reach out to foreign
high-tech companies. According
to the document, these companies
included the U.S.-based companies
Apple, Dell Technologies, and Mi-
crosoft, South Korea-based Sam-
sung Electronics, Japan-based Mit-
subishi Chemical Holdings, and
Taiwan-based chipmaker TSMC.
Having major companies es-
tablish their business in Hainan

ment stated, which was to “speed
up the transformation and upgrade
of [the] province’s economic struc-
ture and build a modern economy
system.”
Finally, the document set out a
goal of having at least five compa-
nies from the Fortune Global 500
set up offices at the FTZ before the
end of 2018.
On March 11, the Hainan FTZ
announced on its official website
that 11 Fortune Global 500 com-
panies, including China’s state-
owned Datang Corp., had set up
business at one of its 11 industrial
parks. Datang, a power generation
raid and was detained. He was kept
under “administrative detention”
for 11 days, which then extended
to criminal detention, Christianity
Daily reported.
Sui said that after charging
Zhang with fraud, authorities are
preparing to charge the entire
house church as a “fraud group”
and label the church’s donations a
“fraud project.” Sui calls that “very
absurd,” noting that it’s a common
practice for church elders and staff
to obtain some living allowances
from donations.
“They definitely have the inten-
tion to make the house church a
fraud group so that they will have
a big case, and be more likely to
receive awards and credits for the
crackdown. This is also what some
higher-level officials want,” he said.
Sui isn’t optimistic about Zhang’s
chances for freedom.
“They dare to slap such a ridicu-
lous crime charge on the pastor,
which means they are treating it
as a big [political] case, daring to
defy the law openly. So, it’s not
looking good for Zhang,” he told
The Epoch Times.

She also mentioned incidents
targeting The Epoch Times in
Hong Kong.
On Nov. 19, 2019, four masked ar-
sonists entered a print shop belong-
ing to The Epoch Times in Tsuen
Wan, Hong Kong, and set a fire that
damaged printing equipment.
In the early hours of April 12, this
year, four intruders again barged
into the printing press and used

Since 2018, the Haikou municipal
government has continued its ef-
forts to entice companies through
financial incentives.
For instance, in a policy an-
nouncement in February 2020,
the Haikou municipal government
said it would provide international
companies that decide to set up a
regional base at the Hainan FTZ
with a one-time payment of 3 mil-
lion yuan (about $462,450). The
amount was increased to 30 mil-
lion yuan (about $4.6 million) for
certain high-tech companies.
The policy also included govern-
ment subsidies of no more than 3
million yuan in five years for com-
panies that take out rental spaces
at the FTZ.
Hainan has been a key venue for
the CCP officials to interact with
foreign business leaders since
2002, when the province held its
first Boao Forum for Asia. The Boao
is known as China’s equivalent of
Davos, an annual conference held
in Switzerland by the nonprofit or-
ganization The World Economic
Forum to boost public-private sec-
tor cooperation.
The Boao Forum is another ve-
hicle through which Beijing hopes
to woo foreign investors. Accord-
ing to another leaked document
obtained by The Epoch Times, the
Haikou government announced
in October 2017 that local officials
should reach out to companies that
attended the 2017 forum, in a bid to
secure their participation in 2018.
The document also obtained an
undated list of companies that Chi-
nese authorities tried to invite to
the Boao Forum. The list consisted
of representatives from 164 Chi-
nese and foreign companies and
institutions. Among the names on
the list were Stephen A. Schwarz-
man, CEO of U.S.-based investment
firm Blackstone Group, and Frank
Meng, chairman of semiconductor
company Qualcomm Asia.
Persecution of Chinese Faithful
April 25 this year was the 22nd
anniversary of Falun Gong’s
peaceful protest for freedom of
religion in China. It also marks
the 22nd year of Falun Gong’s
persecution by the Chinese com-
munist regime.
For years, China has topped
the religious freedom offenders’
lists published by U.S. govern-
ment and human rights watch-
dog organizations for perse-
cuting Tibetans, Buddhists,
Christians, Falun Gong prac-
titioners, Uyghurs, and human
rights defenders.
In 2020, China earned an over-
all score of 9 out of 100 points in
the Freedom House report—a
Washington-based human rights
watchdog group, landing a spot in
the lowest group of 195 countries.
The report said people living in
China under the communist re-
gime were “not free,” giving the
regime a score of zero for religious
freedom.

sure the security of her family.
At the same time, she strongly
condemned the CCP’s suppression
of press freedom and intimidation
of reporters in Hong Kong. She said
she would continue to defend the
city’s freedom of speech and would
never back down from covering
the truth as a journalist.

In Search of
Classical Music
Traditions in
an Ancient
Indian City

VARANASI—Supriyo Maitro is an
A-graded vocalist in Dhrupad, the
most ancient tradition of classical
Indian music. He has performed on
both television and radio and is no
stranger to large audiences. Yet he
hasn’t experienced what the best in
his field have described as sadhana,
or practice on a divine path in India’s
ancient yogic traditions.
Sadhana simply means the cultiva-
tion of one’s spirit for self-realization,
and Dhrupad—a form of music that
can be traced back to one of the oldest
Hindu scriptures, the “Sama Veda”—
can be seen as a meditative tool.
For Indian musicians like Maitro,
who wish to continue learning even
after seeming to have mastered ev-
erything about their craft, this aspira-
tion for self-realization—for improve-
ment in his spiritual cultivation—is
natural. It’s this wish that brought
him to the ghats, or banks, of the
Ganges River in the ancient city of
Kashi—also known by the modern
name of Varanasi.
Kashi—an ancient city of para-
doxes where people come for death,
knowledge, and enlightenment in
the Buddhist and Jain religions, as
well as Hindu systems—is replete
with stories of meditators, classical
musicians, Sanskrit scholars, and
even Western artists and seekers who
sought similar self-realization. The
latest such group the Indian media
has flaunted are appreciators and
aspirants from Hollywood.
How does one have the nerve to
dare to risk one’s successful career
and leave behind most comforts in
search of the spirituality of classical
music? Maitro sees a rational link,
one he expressed to The Epoch Times
in a metaphorical Hindi style: “If the
mango doesn’t have skin, how can it
hold the flesh inside? Some people
limit their comprehension by consid-
ering the mango to be just its skin.”

perficially is never the truth, which

level comprehension.
On the iconic Assi Ghat of Kashi—
which is either crowded with devo-
tees or those performing death ritu-
als—Maitro has a noted companion:
Ravishankar Shukla, a priest who
plays the pakhawaj, a barrel drum
shrouded in antique traditions that
is believed to have been originally
played by the god Ganesha, the Hin-
du god of knowledge personified by
an elephant-headed form.
Shukla explained that the first
generation who followed Dhrupad
believed that the musical form was
created by gods.
Maitro added: “Long back, it was
practiced in the mandir [temples].
Only the Vedas were chanted, espe-
cially the Sama Veda. Music was not
the motive then—chanting was the
motive.” He explained that tradition-
ally, chanting was done with tech-
nically defined meters, intonations,
and swaras, or musical notes. “It was
systematized. You see the Sanskrit
meter, very disciplined.”
The Vedas—the oldest classical San-
skrit literature—were transmitted in
their original forms orally, and this
oral tradition was highly codified and
refined. Today, to a non-practitioner,
these chants may sound musical, but
that’s how these scriptures were origi-
nally passed down.
Before the Sama Veda, only three
swaras were included in the tradition.
The Sama Veda, and the Prabandh—a
composition written for gods, based
on stories from mythology—broad-
ened the forms, according to Maitro.
Maitro and Shukla sat in a small
square room about10 feet long by 10
feet wide, which was linked to oth-
ers by a narrow staircase, stretching
like a spine through the many floors
that temporarily house the devotees
who came to Shukla and his family
of traditional priests for death and
after-death rituals.
While Maitro started the electric
tanpura, a digital version of a string
instrument that is used in all Indian
classical music traditions, Shukla
surprisingly kneaded wheat flour
into a dough.
“The kneaded dough is applied on
the center of the smaller right face of
the pakhawaj to bring out the deep
bass sound,” said Shukla, himself
an accomplished musician. It takes
a “whole lifetime” to learn to knead
by refusing to give it thought and
attention as if in so doing war may
leave us be, forgetting us perhaps.”

a government of what is happening
in the Pacific region, in particular,

is embedded into carved stone pil-
lars that play varied classical instru-
mental music when struck, a music-
architectural technique that has no
known practitioners today.
The most popular among these mu-
sical monuments is the 15th-century
Sri Vittala Temple in Hampi. It has 56
musical pillars.
When reminded of how the den-
sity of the kneaded wheat dough that
makes bread is used to tune a pakha-
waj, and how matter and music could
be interchangeable—as is visible in
the musical pillars—Shukla smiled
and nodded in affirmation.
With the tanpura’s hymnic reso-
nance and the pakhawaj’s deep bass
picking up, Maitro’s voice broke into
the raga yaman, a classical melody
sung specifically at dusk—one of
the first to be taught to learners of
Dhrupad.
Maitro defines raga as “roughly
the classical melody,” but claimed
it to be much more than that. “To
me, it’s ordered intuition, and it’s
very difficult to explain. It’s a basic
quantum of Indian music. It’s like a
grammatical rule that helps to intuit
music,” he said.
There is an infinite number of ra-
gas in Dhrupad, he said. “They have
been classified into different num-
bers in different traditional texts.
But musicians continue to compose
new ragas.”
A Culture of Music
Outside Shukla’s home, there’s always
the hustle-bustle of an Indian pil-
grimage town. Amidst cars honking,
a flute seller plays melodious music,
while every evening priests line up on
the Assi Ghat for prayers that include
Sanskrit chants, bells, and cymbals.
Maitro, who also teaches music,
said he has witnessed a greater de-
gree of technical musical awareness
on the streets of Kashi—even among
untrained musicians—than one finds
elsewhere.
“The first day I arrived in Kashi, I
heard a snake charmer playing bhim-
palasi on his been [a folk wind instru-
ment],” he said.
The raga bhimpalasi is an Indian
melody that’s played during late af-
ternoon hours till sunset and requires
inflammatory.
“By all means, we need to stand up
for our trade, stand up for human
rights, but language like ‘drums of
war,’ I think that is pretty hyper-ex-
cited language,” he told Nine News.
“I am not sure our senior public
servants should be using that lan-
guage because I am not sure what
that actually helps, except cause
more anxiety.”
Pezzullo’s comments come just
days after Defence Minister Peter
Dutton said a conflict around Tai-
wan couldn’t be ruled out.
“People need to be realistic about
the activity,” Dutton told the ABC on
April 25. “There is militarisation of
bases across the region. Obviously,
there is a significant amount of ac-
tivity, and there is an animosity be-
tween Taiwan and China.”

recent months as Chinese military

training in classical music.
“That flute player you see near the
tea shop plays ragas. I asked him
[how] he has learned, and he told
me he has learned just by listen-
ing to exponents in the city. It’s not
common to learn ragas by listening
to classical music. In this city, clas-
sical music is embedded in every
home, in everyday life.” He added
that these untrained people are not
even aware that they have such high
musical consciousness.
“They have no egoistic pride. Here,
even a boatman knows musical taan,”
a technique used in the vocal perfor-
mance of a raga. It is extremely tech-
nical and requires training, he said.
Half a mile from Assi Ghat is the
Tulsi Ghat, which holds the legacy
of the 16th-century saint and poet
Tulsidas. Others linked to the musi-
cal legacy of the city include the sitar
maestro Ravi Shankar, and the sheh-
nai maestro Bismillah Khan, who
continued to live and play regularly
on the banks of the Ganges even in
the prime of his career.
“Dhrupad has a culture; without
culture nothing is possible,” Shukla
said. “Music is a sadhana; in sadha-
na, the more you cultivate, the more
you’ll know it. That person will be
quieter, and there’s a light visible in
that person.
“Classical music isn’t about [aca-
demic] degrees, it’s about tradition.
The more you do it, the more you gain
clarity. It’s like other classical tradi-
tions of learning like dhyana [medita-
tion] and sanyasa [renunciation]—the
more the person is devoted, the more
the person gains.”
After spending eight months in
Kashi, Maitro left the city due to a CO-
VID-19 lockdown in the second week
of April. The opportunity to practice
in temples while he was there gave
him a priceless gift.
“I was trying to compose some-
thing in raga basant for the past five
years but wasn’t satisfied with what I
composed,” he said. “[One day,] I was
practicing in the [temple] and ... the
whole composition came to me.
“I played it to [Shukla] that eve-
ning and asked him about the com-
position. And he answered that it’s
traditional. I consider it an extraor-
dinary blessing that comes from
these holy places.”
Maitro plans to return to Kashi once
the lockdown has been lifted.

On Julius Caesar, Derek Chauvin,
and the Fate of Our Republic

Julius Caesar is often
blamed for bringing
about the end of the Ro-
man Republic.
I think he merely hap-
pened to be there when
the Republic imploded.
In 49 B.C., Caesar crossed the Rubicon,
a shallow river in Northern Italy, with a
single legion.
The river marked the border between
cis-Alpine Gaul and Italy proper. Bring-
ing armed troops into the fatherland was
illegal, tantamount to treason.
Caesar knew this, which is doubtless
one reason he never mentions the epi-
sode in his account of the civil war that
his action sparked.
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Cae-
sar did not “cross the Rubicon” gratuitously.
He had been at loggerheads with the
Senate for months.
Over the preceding decade, he had
conquered Gaul, greatly enriching him-
self and the Republic.
Yet Caesar had many enemies. Indeed,
after a tumultuous term as consul in 59,
he had originally decamped to Gaul in
order to escape them.
At first, his alliance with Crassus,
the richest man in Rome, and Pompey
Magnus, Rome’s greatest general before
Caesar, protected him.
But Crassus, seeking military glory to
crown his monetary splendor, died igno-
miniously at the hands of the Parthians
at the battle of Carrhae in 53.
Pompey had been bound to Caesar
through marriage to Caesar’s daughter
Julia.
But after Julia died in childbirth, in 54,
Pompey drifted out of Caesar’s orbit.
His marriage to the daughter of Me-
tellus Scipio, one of Caesar’s bitterest
enemies, formalized the end of the alli-
ance. Pompey was now a creature of the
anti-Caesarian faction of the Senate.
As his extended term as governor in
Gaul was coming to an end, Caesar’s
enemies demanded that he disband
his army and return to Rome, where he
would certainly face prosecution.
Nevertheless, Caesar agreed, just so long

as he could first stand again for consul in
absentia. The wildly popular Caesar was
confident he would be elected, and with the
office came immunity from prosecution.
His enemies refused to allow this. “Alea
iacta fuit”: the die had been cast.
Caesar crossed the Rubicon with Legio
XIII, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Caesar destroyed Pompey’s army at
the battle of Pharsalus the next year and
went on to crush all remaining pockets of
resistance. In 46, the Senate named him
dictator for 10 years.
So did Caesar kill the Republic? Or had
the Republic, as he himself said long
since become “merely a name, without
body or shape”?
I think Caesar was right. The Republic
had expired years before he came on the
scene.
Certainly, it was dead in fact, if not in
name, by the mid-80s when Lucius Sulla
marched his army on Rome, appointed
himself dictator, and began issuing pub-
lic lists of enemies whose property, and
whose lives, were forfeit.
Thousands died before Sulla, to the
world’s amazement, voluntarily stepped
down.
In fact, the fate of the Republic was
already sealed decades earlier, when the
Gracchi brothers, Tiberius and Gaius,
introduced mob violence to the streets
of Rome in the course of pursuing their
anti-aristocratic policies of land reform.
Derek Chauvin’s Trial
I thought of this course of events over the
weekend, when a friend told me about a
dinner conversation he had with his son
in the aftermath of the guilty verdict in
the Derek Chauvin case last week.
As all the world knows, the former Min-
neapolis police officer was found guilty
of all three counts against him: second-
and third-degree murder and second-
degree manslaughter.
Before the verdict, Rep. Maxine Waters
(D-Calif.) traveled to Minnesota, violated
curfew, and declared that Chauvin was
“guilty, guilty, guilty.”
“Mostly peaceful protestors” rampaged
in various cities to underscore her point.
Indeed, Waters had earlier insisted that
Chauvin be charged with first-degree

What just
happened in
Minneapolis wasn’t
so much a trial as
a quasi-religious
sacrifice. There was
never any doubt
about the outcome
of the proceeding.

murder, as if the police officer had in-
tentionally murdered George Floyd with
malice aforethought instead of interven-
ing to restrain a drug-crazed felon who,
having just attempted to pass a counter-
feit $20 bill, was resisting arrest.
Waters also warned that if a verdict for
murder were not returned, Minneapolis—
and not only Minneapolis—would burn.
The jury barely deliberated before
reaching a verdict. They didn’t need to.
The trial of Chauvin was a show trial. The
result had been preordained.
This was the work of a sedentary lynch
mob, not so much angry as intimidated.
As David Horowitz observed, “The
speed of the decision was itself evidence
that the jury hadn’t deliberated or even
considered any of the evidence presented
in the trial, as to what actually caused
Floyd’s death, whether Chauvin acted
in accordance with the standard proce-
dures of the Minneapolis Police Depart-
ment, and therefore whether there was
any malice or inhumane disregard for
Floyd’s life involved in Chauvin’s actions.”
Horowitz went on to note that “Derek
Chauvin is not a nice man. He is callous,
egocentric, and has a record of excessive
use of force complaints.”
But, of course, that doesn’t mean that
Chauvin murdered Floyd.
“Our system of justice,” Horowitz re-
minds us, “depends on judging each case
on its merits.”

Margaret Sanger’s Racist Legacy

In my movies “Hillary’s America”
and “Death of a Nation,” I por-
trayed Margaret Sanger, the
founder and longtime leader of
Planned Parenthood, as an out-
and-out racist. My evidence for
this was overwhelming:
Sanger was never an advocate of birth
control per se; she wanted birth control
of the people she considered unwanted
people in society, a group she termed
“undesirables” and “human weeds.”
Sanger’s goal was to create “a race of
thoroughbreds,” a term evocative of the
goals of the Nazis. She drew a sharp line
not so much between black and white
as between “fit” and “unfit.” By fit, she
meant whites, but only educated, upper-
class whites. By unfit, she meant pretty
much everyone else.
In 1926, Sanger spoke to the Women’s
Chapter of the Ku Klux Klan in New
Jersey about her ideas for reducing the
black birthrate. The racists loved it; other
speaking invitations followed.
Sanger also created what she called
the Negro Project at Planned Parent-
hood, designed, in her words, to get rid of
“human beings who should never have
been born.” She recruited black pastors
and activists and paid them to convince
black people to reduce their birthrates,
by sterilization if necessary.
In one of her letters, Sanger said, “We do
not want word to get out that we are trying
to exterminate the Negro population.”
The Nazis based their racist steriliza-
tion laws on American models developed
by Sanger and others; Sanger herself
praised the Nazi laws as more advanced
than anything passed in the United
States.
It’s a crushing indictment. Even so,
Planned Parenthood portrayed Sanger in

glowing terms, downplaying her eugenic
and racist positions and insisting she
was a progressive champion of women’s
rights and human rights. Feminist au-
thors such as Ellen Chesler wrote devo-
tional biographies of Sanger, reinforcing
Planned Parenthood’s propaganda line.
But now, Alexis McGill Johnson, presi-
dent and CEO of Planned Parenthood,
has decided to fess up. She recently wrote
an op-ed in The New York Times, titled
“I’m the Head of Planned Parenthood.
We’re Done Making Excuses for Our
Founder.”
Johnson gave a partial, though suf-
ficiently damning, list of Sanger’s racist
positions and actions, and then con-
cluded, “We must fully take responsibil-
ity for the harm that Sanger caused to
generations of people with disabilities
and Black, Latino, Asian American, and
Indigenous people.” In effect, Planned
Parenthood has now officially disavowed
its own founder and most famous figure.
Interestingly, the groundwork for
this was laid around a year ago, when
Planned Parenthood of Greater New
York removed Sanger’s name from its
Manhattan health clinic and also called
on city leaders to remove Sanger’s name
from a street sign that hung outside its
offices.
“The removal of Margaret Sanger’s
name from our building is both a neces-
sary and overdue step to reckon with
our legacy and acknowledged Planned
Parenthood’s contributions to historical
reproductive harm within communities
of color,” remarked Karen Seltzer, chair
of the New York affiliate’s board.
What makes the New York group’s, and
now the national organization’s, about-
turn so significant is that they’re not only
changing course but also admitting that
they’ve been lying and covering up for
a racist founder for decades. In effect,
they’re admitting that my portrait of
Sanger as a bigot and Nazi apologist was
basically right.
Yet, some conservatives have ridiculed
these apologies and dubbed them noth-
ing more than a “rebranding strategy”
of Planned Parenthood. Roland War-
ren, CEO of Care Net, said, “For me, this
was kind of like changing the name of
Auschwitz.”
That’s a harsh analogy, but Warren’s
point is that Planned Parenthood still
has its clinics concentrated in inner cities
and barrios. It disproportionately termi-
nates the lives of black and Latino babies.
Although blacks and Latinos make up
around 31 percent of the population,
more than 40 percent of abortions done
by Planned Parenthood end the lives of
black and Latino infants.
The good news is that Planned Parent-
hood is finally being honest about its
racist origins. Think how ridiculous this
makes previous Planned Parenthood
leaders—some of them black—who
knowingly protected a vicious racist.
Think of where this leaves Chesler, who
pushed the old institutional propaganda
and has now been exposed as a fraud. Or
Hillary Clinton, who got the Margaret
Sanger award from Planned Parenthood
and gave a disgusting paean to Sanger,
saying she regarded her as a mentor and
a personal inspiration.
She must be feeling very uncomfortable
right about now.
The bad news is that Planned Parent-
hood has no intention of changing its
dedication to abortion rights or to mak-
ing abortion easily available—perhaps
even encouraged—in minority com-
munities. So the founder’s racist vision,
although no longer pursued under the
Margaret Sanger banner, is still being
carried out in terms of her organization
imposing disproportionate casualties
on the very communities Sanger wanted
to see shrink and eventually disappear
from the face of the earth.

and strategic bombers.
Communist China’s military expan-
sion is not limited to the traditional di-
visions of land, sea, and air; it is also
making advances in the realms of
space and electromagnetic warfare.
The Chinese regime also has 1.7 mil-
lion personnel in the People’s Armed
Police, a paramilitary organization pri-
marily tasked with maintaining inter-
nal order. Like the PLA, the organiza-
tion is under the unified leadership of
the CCP Central Military Commission;
in addition to this the CCP also main-
tains a large number of reserve and mi-
litia units. The Party’s military doctrine
has always stressed the importance of
“people’s war.” Under the CCP’s totali-
tarian system, it can quickly redirect
all available resources for military use
in the event of war. This means that the
CCP has a pool of over a billion people
from which it can draft huge numbers
of people. Even overseas Chinese factor
into the CCP’s military and intelligence
strategy; in 2017, the PRC passed a “na-
tional intelligence law” demanding all
Chinese citizens assist the Communist
Party, no matter where they reside.
China’s GDP increased rapidly be-
tween 1997 and 2007. The PLA ground
forces now have thousands of modern
main battle tanks. The PLA Navy has
two aircraft carriers in its fleet and is
building more. Ninety percent of PLA
Air Force fighters are of the fourth
generation, and the CCP has begun
to introduce fifth-generation fighters.
In early 2017, the PRC announced a
6.5 percent inflation-adjusted increase
in its annual military budget to $154.3
billion. Analysis of data from 2008
through 2017 indicates Beijing’s official
military budget grew at an annual av-
erage of 8 percent in inflation-adjusted
terms over that period. [101] Observers
estimate that the CCP’s actual military
spending is twice as much as what is of-

developing armed drones. A large
number of the earlier CH-4 Rainbows
have taken over the military markets
of Jordan, Iraq, Turkmenistan, and
Pakistan, countries that were restrict-
ed from purchasing armed drones
from the United States. [103] The lat-
est CH-7 Rainbow, in some ways, is as
well-equipped as the X-47B, the best
drone the United States has to offer.

simulated the drones combating the
enemy, which was clearly the U.S. mili-
tary. [105] The drones’ small size allows
them to be deployed from a variety of
platforms, including civilian vessels,
which could give the CCP an advan-
tage over Taiwan in a potential conflict.
[106] A large number of aerial drones
can form clusters under the control of
satellites and artificial intelligence,
making them useful in regional and
asymmetrical conflicts.
The stealth fighter Chinese J-20, also
unveiled at the Zhuhai Air Show, re-
sembles the American F-22, while the
Chinese J-31 appears modeled on the
F-35. Though still lagging behind the
U.S. military in many respects, the PRC
defense industry is closing the gap with
the United States in developing mod-
ern jet fighters.
In terms of tactics, the PLA focuses
on asymmetric capabilities: asym-
metric warfare, asymmetric strategy,
and asymmetric weapons. [107] Adm.
Philip Davidson, commander of the
U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, described
China as a “peer competitor.” He said
that China is not trying to match Amer-
ica’s firepower one-to-one; rather, it
is trying to catch up with the United
States by building critical asymmet-
ric capabilities, including the use of
anti-ship missiles and capabilities in
submarine warfare. Because of this, he
warned that “there is no guarantee that
the United States would win a future
conflict with China.” [108]
One such asymmetrical weapon is
the Dongfeng 21D anti-ship ballistic

At the same time, the Party leadership
has adopted terrorist military theories
such as unrestricted warfare. It advo-
cates the necessity of war by saying that
“war is not far from us; it is the birth-
place of the ‘Chinese century.’” It legiti-
mizes violence and terror with sayings
such as “death is the driving force for
the advancement of history.” It justifies
aggression with the sayings “there is no
right to development without the right
to war” and “the development of one
country poses a threat to another—this
is the general rule of world history.” [109]
Zhu Chenghu, a major general and
the dean of the PRC’s National Defense
University, publicly stated in 2005 that if
the United States intervened in a war in
the Taiwan Strait, China would preemp-
tively use nuclear weapons to raze hun-
dreds of cities in the United States, even
if all of China to the east of Xi’an (a city
located at the western edge of China’s
traditional boundaries) were destroyed
as a consequence. [110] Zhu’s statements
were made largely to probe the reactions
of the international community.
It is important to be aware that the
CCP’s military strategies are always
subordinate to its political needs, and
that the regime’s military ambitions
form only one dimension of its broader
scheme to establish communist hege-
mony over the entire globe. [111]

ficially acknowledged. Aside from this,
the military strength of the regime is
not fully reflected in military spending
because its actual military expenditure
is higher than the public figures, and
the CCP can requisition many civilian
resources and manpower at its discre-
tion. The entire industrial system can
serve the needs of war, which means
its true military capabilities far exceed
official data and the usual estimates.
The CCP uses a broad range of es-
pionage to catch up with the United

and knowledge that the Chinese can-
not develop independently. [102]
The CCP has built a global system
consisting of more than thirty Beidou
(Big Dipper) navigation satellites, with
global GPS military positioning capa-
bilities. In conjunction with this, the
PLA is fielding increasingly advanced
combat-capable drones. At the 2018
Zhuhai Airshow in China, the debut
of the CH-7 Rainbow drone caught
the attention of military experts. The
Rainbow series signifies that China
Armed with missiles like the Dong-
feng 21D and the YJ-12, the PLA does
not have to match the U.S. Navy in one-
to-one strength—such as the number
of deployable aircraft carriers—to be
able to deny it regional access to the
Western Pacific.
Following the rapid expansion of its
military power, the PRC has become a
huge weapons exporter to the world’s
authoritarian regimes, such as North
Korea and Iran. On the one hand, the
goal is to expand its military alliances,
and on the other hand, to disperse and

The Senator Nobody Voted for Has
Curious Plan for Joe Biden’s America

“Biden-Harris” admin-
istration, California Gov.
Gavin Newsom appoint-
ed Alex Padilla to replace
Harris in the Senate. Both
politicians have backstories that people
across the nation and around the world
should know.
Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) was a city
councilman in Los Angeles from 1999
to 2006, and a state senator from 2006
to 2014. The following year, Padilla be-
came California’s secretary of state, and
after the 2016 election, Padilla refused
to cooperate with a federal probe of
voter fraud, a longstanding practice in
California.
As a State Department investigation
discovered, falsely documented illegals
have been voting in local, state, and fed-
eral elections for decades. In 1996, 642
illegals voted for Democrat Loretta San-
chez, who defeated Republican Robert
Dornan by fewer than 1,000 votes. In re-
cent years, voter fraud has been surging
through the state’s imported electorate.
According to a study by scholars at
the Massachusetts Institute of Technol-
ogy and Yale, more than 22 million
people are illegally present in the
United States. Pew Research pegged
the figure at 11 million, more likely the
number illegally present in California
alone. For example, when he an-
nounced a lawsuit against the Trump
administration in 2019, then-California
Attorney General Xavier Becerra dis-
played a sign claiming 10 million “im-
migrants” in the state.
When illegal aliens get driver’s licenses,
the California Department of Motor
Vehicles automatically registers them to
vote. In 2015, Padilla told the Los Angeles
Times, “At the latest, for the 2018 election

cycle, I expect millions of new voters on
the rolls in the state of California.” True
to form, by March 2018, the DMV “motor
voter” plan had given licenses to more
than 1 million illegals. Padilla wouldn’t
say how many illegals voted in 2018, but
his previous reference to “millions” pro-
vided a ballpark figure. Many more were
on the way.

Constitution is replaced

From 2016 to 2018, “caravans” of il-
legals began showing up at U.S. ports
of entry in California, the place on the
U.S. border most distant from Central
America. Once in California, the acqui-
sition of a driver’s license makes any
illegal a registered voter. In March 2020,
Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered mail-in
ballots for every registered voter in the

state. That included the millions of new
voters that Padilla celebrated.
As in 2016 and 2018, the secretary
of state failed to reveal how many ille-
gals voted, hardly the only issue in
need of investigation. California is
also a pioneer of ballot harvesting,
and that came into play with Kamala
Harris, UC–Hastings College of the Law
grad. Democrat queenmaker Willie
Brown struck up a romantic relation-
ship with Harris, 30 years his junior.
Brown set up Harris in a lucrative
sinecure and backed her run for district
attorney in San Francisco.
In 2010, Harris was so poorly regarded
that the Sacramento Bee, a veritable
Democrat newsletter, endorsed Repub-
lican Steve Cooley, district attorney of
Los Angeles County. Cooley held the lead
on election night but the same Service
Employees International Union (SEIU)
drones who ran Harris’s campaign
dredged up enough provisional ballots
to give Harris a victory of less than 1 per-
cent some three weeks later.
If any Californian thought that was bal-
lot fraud, it would be hard to blame them.
President Barack Obama called Harris
“the best-looking attorney general in the
country,” but her record was undistin-
guished, especially on public corrup-
tion. When whistleblowers called for a
criminal investigation over trouble with
the new Bay Bridge, Harris took no ac-
tion. In 2020, Harris often clashed with
Delaware Democrat Joe Biden, particu-
larly on his fondness for segregationists,
but Biden wound up giving her the nod.
Newsom appointed Padilla to replace
Harris in the Senate. For a man nobody
voted for, Padilla proved rather hostile to
senators who had, in fact, been elected
by the people.

Chauvin’s trial. Further Horowitz: “Any-
one watching the actual testimony of
witnesses and experts would know that
the issues in the case were complex, tech-
nical, and contested. It would have taken
days if not weeks for an open-minded
jury to determine whether Chauvin was
guilty or not. No one respectful of all the
attention put on this case by experts and
witnesses on both sides would consider
that the three contradictory charges
could be lumped together. Only people
frightened of disappointing the lynch
mob could make that mistake. But the
jury was uninterested in the evidence.”
Indeed. Evidence is only wanted when
one lacks the pleasing certitude that comes
with the conviction of one’s moral election.
What just happened in Minneapolis
wasn’t so much a trial as a quasi-religious
sacrifice.
There was never any doubt about the
outcome of the proceeding.
Growing Pains
Which brings me back to Caesar and the

expel Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh
Hawley (R-Mo.) over their Jan. 6 objec-
tions to the November presidential
elections, Padilla said: “Yes, I think they
have to be held accountable. ... I think
the nation would be best served if they
were no longer in the Senate.”
Padilla recently went on record that
the Electoral College is America’s “origi-
nal sin” and “one of those long-lasting
things that need to be corrected.”
In his vision, the Electoral College
of the Constitution is replaced by an
imported electorate. The illegals vote
for Democrats and in return get a host
of government benefits plus protection
from deportation through sanctuary
laws. That arrangement is likely what
President Joe Biden has in mind when
he touts California as a model for the
nation.
As Biden said in 2014, illegal immi-
grants are “already Americans,” so
the border is essentially meaningless.
The surging caravans are basically
drives to bring in more voters. The
rule of the Democratic Party replaces
the rule of law, and what goes around
comes around.
When Harris moved on to the U.S. Sen-
ate, she was replaced as attorney general
by Becerra, once on Hillary Clinton’s
shortlist as a running mate. Becerra is
now back in Washington as Health and
Human Services boss. Under the Biden-
Harris administration, the nation is look-
ing more like California by the day.

What we are seeing, that smart young
man observed, are the growing pains
that come with the transition from one
form of government to another.
That’s exactly right.
The United States used to be a demo-
cratic republic.
Those days are long gone.
We are now well on our way to some
form of bureaucratic, socialist-inflected
oligarchy.
Exactly what the lineaments of that oli-
garchy will be, what proportion of smiles
and what proportion of somber frowns, is
not yet clear.
But whether the resulting polity looks
more like Scandinavia or East Germany
(or, indeed, Beijing), I predict that the
road will be bumpy and architects of our
fate imperious.

Identity Politics
Is Destroying the
Social Fabric

Identity politics—the
formation of exclusive
alliances based on
racial, religious, ethnic,
or social identity—is
manifesting in all cul-
tural corners. It has seeped
into school curricula and overtaken
traditional Western individualism as the
new dominant lens for interpreting one’s
place in society.
Entire university departments have
been rededicated to examining so-called
intersectionality, defined as the com-
plex way in which the effects of multiple
forms of discrimination, such as rac-
ism, sexism, and classism, combine to
determine individual experience. As
even Homer gets nixed from curricula,
the traditional study of humanities has
been rededicated to parsing out layers of
oppression.
The purpose of this identity obsession
has some noble intentions at its founda-
tion: highlighting the roots of disparities
and fostering a sense of community, to
name a few. Drawing attention to the
interests of historically excluded groups
initially had the attention of promoting
inclusion, but, in its current iteration,
identity politics does just the opposite.
This way of thinking encourages young
people to form a sense of self based on
immutable characteristics, rather than
content of character. As critical race
theory and other divisive rhetoric creeps
into curricula and reaches our children,
it teaches them to recognize differences
at the expense of common humanity.
Our present education system insists
on separating students into so-called
affinity groups to discuss issues of race,
class, or gender with peers with similar
backgrounds. Student clubs have trend-
ed away from interest-based associations
to group identity-based ones. Entire
floors of dorms are being reserved for
specific racial groups. Columbia Univer-
sity will even host six separate gradua-
tion ceremonies this year based on race,
income, and sexual orientation.
The message that all of this sends is
very clear: Only people with similar
backgrounds to your own are capable
of understanding your viewpoints and
experiences. Identity politics builds bar-
riers at points of interpersonal difference,
preventing the discovery of common
ground. It fundamentally undermines
the noble ideal of diversity, instead pro-
moting a neo-segregationist tendency.
By fostering this intense obsession with
group identity over individuality, our
society is failing its children. Intersec-
tionality reduces their sense of selves to
mere points on a Venn diagram of group
oppression. By insisting that immutable
disadvantages are insurmountable,
identity politics eradicates any sense of
personal agency and effectively crushes
hope at its source.
Many of us know at our cores that this
obsession with identity will only lead to
regression, and we recognize its detri-
mental effects on our children and society
at large. As powerful institutions from ac-
ademia to corporations promote divisive-
ness, fighting back can be daunting, but it
must be done to defend individualism—
the very cornerstone of a free society.
There may be a glimmer of hope for
overcoming this cultural obsession with
identity. As Jordan Peterson points out,
the study of intersectionality in and of
itself is an admission of the logical fault
of identity politics.

fabric. The only route to reclaiming our
future is the realization that individual-
ism is the bedrock of freedom. We must
wake up and reclaim our sacred right to
self-determination before identity poli-
tics has succeeded in its ultimate goal: to
divide and conquer.

Power Back to the People

“Power to the People” was
a chant used by anti-war
and civil rights protest-
ers in the ’60s. John Len-
non wrote a song with
that title in 1971. The idea
flowed from the Preamble to
the U.S. Constitution, which begins, “We
the People.”
on this issue, but as I see President Biden
issuing record numbers of executive or-
ders, bypassing the authority of Congress,
and Congress on a spending binge that is
driving the debt to record and unsustain-
able levels, perhaps threatening our very
survival, I have come to the conclusion
that nothing but a carefully organized
and controlled constitutional convention
can return power to where the Founders
intended it to reside—with the people.

The concept behind that phrase was
that the people, not the government, are
sovereign and the government’s power is
granted to it by the governed.
That has been reversed in our day as

government to be limited, so the people

The government has also become
expensive and remote from most people.
Recall that it was Ronald Reagan who
said, “Government is not the solution to
our problem; government is the problem.”
How ancient that seems today, given gov-
ernment’s growth and reach.
According to ConventionOfStates.com,
which tracks the progress of resolutions,
15 states have approved calling for a con-
vention of the states to reign in what they
believe is out-of-control government. The
support of 34 states is needed. Thirty-
eight states are required to ratify any
proposed amendments. The website says
seven states have approved a resolution
in one of their legislative chambers and
22 state legislatures will consider doing
so this year.
The Founders saw state conventions
as the ultimate safeguard against gov-
ernment overreach and a necessary
workaround should Congress exceed its
constitutional authority, which support-
ers of state conventions believe it has.
Critics of state constitutional conven-
tions say they could potentially open the
door for revisions in our founding docu-
ment that even convention proponents
would oppose. Convention supporters say
the agenda, such as balanced budgets and
term limits, could be limited by the states.
I have been on the side of the cautious

Today’s federal government has
achieved the opposite. It has grown ever
larger and limited freedoms we once

Given the irked and fearful
state of the liberal temper at
the present time, many people
might find it hard to believe that
liberalism used to be fun.
During the four years of President
Donald Trump, liberals were miserable,
sinking ever further into resentment
and incredulity, a sense of history and
America robbing them of their rightful
place in control of the country. Unfor-
tunately, the ascent of Joe Biden hasn’t
much improved the mood, either. They
have to spend too much time pretending
that the bumbling mediocrity who now
occupies the White House has states-
manlike stature for them to feel comfort-
able and secure.
Go back to the ’90s, however, and a
whole different attitude ran through the
liberal ranks. Do you remember? The
Reagan–Bush Era was over, Bill Clinton
was popular, and Newt Gingrich’s Con-
gress had some off-putting characters
who signified to liberals that the last gasp
of conservatism was at hand. The left
could be an irritant, yes, but troublemak-
ers such as Al Sharpton had but a minor
influence on national affairs and re-
quired only the occasional appeasement
to be kept in check.
Meanwhile, the  North American Free
Trade Agreement and other globalist
moves promised even greater prosperity,
and the internet, too, seemed just the kind
of instrument of individual expression
and universal access that tallied the lib-
eral dream of empowerment and equity.
It gave liberals daily confirmation of ...
themselves. They saw that the world was
moving in a liberalizing direction, and
they knew that it was good. How could
they not congratulate themselves when
all of this ’90s advent came atop a long
historical advance that set liberals on
a solid moral pedestal forever (so they
believed)? Apart from the Reagan inter-
ruption, they could look back at a half-
century of righteous progress that gave
no credit to their opponents. Liberals
could claim as their own the civil rights
movement, the anti-war protests, wom-
en’s liberation, gay rights, and the steady
diversification of the U.S. population, all
of them virtuous and overdue crusades
that ennobled the ones who led them.
And what did conservatives have in
1995? Not much. Clinton’s efforts to
streamline government and yield a bud-
get surplus preempted the conservative
charge of “tax-and-spend Democrats,”
just as his “Sister Souljah moment”
warded off the “another-liberal-soft-on-
crime” allegation. Oh, conservatives
could still talk about “family values,”
but liberals from Hollywood to Manhat-
tan only laughed at them for that (how
many social conservatives appeared as

sympathetic characters in movies and
TV shows back then?). When the Monica
Lewinsky affair landed in Republicans’
laps, conservatives thought they had a
political winner, and a sure path back
to the American conscience—and it all
blew up in the disastrous 1998 midterms.
I was a liberal in 1995 and remember
well the pleasing mindset. I could spot
Dan Quayle’s visage on television and
experience a contempt that never should
have raised my dignity, but it did. It feels
nice to have history on your side, to wit-
ness your beliefs realized in the public
square, to see your adversaries defeated
once and for all. You were right, you were
good, the outcomes prove it. The country
is going your way, as it should. You got
hurt when George W. Bush stole the 2000
election, but his presidency failed in so
many ways that all of your beliefs were
vindicated. Trump sticks in your craw,
but he’s gone now, disgraced and humili-
ated, and we can move on.
But the liberal hasn’t moved on, doesn’t
seem happy again. Why the rancor? Why
is the liberal personality still so fractious
and reactive?
Perhaps it has something to do with
what was reported in this paper from the
National Bureau of Economic Research,
released in May 2009, titled “The Paradox
of Declining Female Happiness.” There,
The ideas and researchers found a strange phenom-
enon. While women had since the 1970s
visions that made “enormous gains” in income and
liberalism has educational attainment, enjoyed “an un-
endowed with precedented level of control over fertili-
ty” and new technologies that freed them
deep mythic value from much “domestic drudgery,” women
have fallen apart, have suffered a “concurrent decline in

Freedom and independence have gone

what liberalism in its feminist variet-
ies sought, and their success has been
remarkable. Indeed, women now earn
many more bachelor’s degrees, master’s

medical school enrollments are about
even, women edge men in law school en-
rollments. This was supposed to enhance
female satisfaction, to liberate women
from the exploitations of the kitchen and
the bedroom.
And yet, the bliss hasn’t followed. The
data cast doubt on one of the supposed
historic triumphs of liberalism, and lib-
erals don’t like it. When I’ve mentioned
this paradox of declining female happi-
ness to liberals, I have gotten no answer,
only a blank stare. The unexpected out-

come runs against a belief liberals hold
too deeply. They can’t absorb contrary
facts, and, as is always the case, such
situations exact a psychic cost.
And here’s another set of data that
troubles the triumphant liberal. On the
2019 National Assessment of Educational
Progress exam in mathematics, 12th-
graders who were white scored 159, 12th-
graders who were black 128. In 2015, the

at the White House on points, and in 2000 it was 34 points.

achievement, the racial gap between
blacks and whites hasn’t changed much
at all. The gap closed tremendously in
the 1970s and ’80s, and liberals could
point to liberal policies and practices
as the cause of that success. But since
1990, the difference between white and
black math skills has withstood liberal
curricular changes (for instance, a more
“culturally relevant” classroom), liberal
Big Government legislation (No Child
Left Behind), and mountains of money.
This, too, wasn’t supposed to happen.
The liberal triumph of Civil Rights was
expected to deliver slow but steady prog-
ress, “racial uplift,” as it was once called,
as the evils of discrimination were
removed and blacks would be free to
pursue happiness and climb the income/
class ladder. But progress has stalled, and
it has stalled for decades. Liberals don’t
know what to say or do. The condition of
black America has acute symbolic value
for liberals (which is why they painted
Trump as an unrepentant racist, though
they had no evidence for it).
The triumph of Civil Rights can’t end
like this; they have to save it. What to do,
though? Liberals might push harder for
affirmative action, but when those pro-
grams verge too much on quotas, they
gainsay the liberal emphasis on individ-
ualism and neutral procedures. Liberals
can’t look too closely at private causes,
either, or else they might end up fac-
ing fatherlessness in black families, and
feminists don’t want to deal with that.

als have gone along with it because they
don’t know what else to do. Their failure
to end inequalities has left them vulner-
able to figures such as the founders of
Black Lives Matter, who abhor the very
individual freedoms liberals pledge to
uphold. Once again, this puts liberals in
a psychically difficult position to sustain.
There are other liberal disappoint-
ments. Globalization certainly has lost
its glow, and so has diversity (as this 2007
study by Robert Putnam showed, more
ethnic diversity in neighborhoods causes
this: “Trust (even of one’s own race) is
lower, altruism and community coopera-
tion rarer, friends fewer.” All of them add
up to an ego crisis for the liberal. What
they could approve and affirm of them-
selves in 1995, they can’t in 2021, and it
pains them.
The momentum they had, the confi-
dence and swagger, the certainty of their
own sanction and elevated fate—it’s all
gone. They have to blame something else.
People can’t live for long with a contra-
diction between inner belief and outer
reality, and it’s often easier to distort
reality than to revise beliefs. “It’s Trump’s
fault, it’s all his fault!” It was a four-year
chant, and one had to marvel at the lack
of self-reflection on our otherwise very
sophisticated liberal who was willing to
go along with absurdities such as “pussy
hats” and “pee tapes”—a clear sign of
psychic turmoil. Now that Trump is
gone, they need another scapegoat, and
so they’ve had to transfer the blame to
Tucker Carlson, or to a mass murderer in
Atlanta, or to a rising white-supremacist
menace in the land, none of which are
going to hold up.
The real problem has nothing to do
with these supposed enemies and
villains. It’s that the ideas and visions
that liberalism has endowed with deep
mythic value have fallen apart, and liber-
als can’t handle the truth. They utter the
word diversity as if it possessed magical
powers, but the word sounds more vacu-
ous with every passing month. They talk
about racism here, there, and every-
where until the word now has no more
impact than white noise among anyone
but one another. They address sexism as
if it were 1959 and women were excluded
from college admissions, while the rest of
us see young women equaling or outdo-
ing younger men in nearly every profes-
sion except engineering.
Liberalism is in crisis, and
so are liberals, and it’s going
to take a profound adjustment
for them to come out of it.
Nancy Pelosi and Paul Krugman
and other leading liberals remind me
of World War I generals whose cruel
incompetence made the words patrio-
tism and courage and success nothing
but hot air when they came out of their
mouths. Liberalism is a hollow outlook,
as is obvious by the way in which the il-
liberal “woke” order liberals around like
drill sergeants and liberals comply with,
“Thank you, sir, may I have another!”
This is the source of Trump Derange-
ment Syndrome, cancel culture, woke
intimidation, and a Democratic Party
that has lost its democratic character.
Liberal myths have collapsed, and liber-
als are dazed and confused. The historic
triumphs on which they based their
rightness haven’t turned out so well, but
they can’t give them up. They are in de-
nial, and people in denial get very angry
when the denial stops working.
In fact, they eagerly give up their princi-
ples in order to maintain their positions,
as with journalists who stop behaving
like journalists, academics who abandon
academic freedom, and mayors who
won’t defend their own cities.
The challenge for conservatives is that
liberals control the major institutions
in American society, and a neurotic
with power tends to put his power in the
service of his neurosis. He can rational-
ize his violations, too, even as they cross
liberal principle. It’s happening every
day—the implementation of unconstitu-
tional speech codes, people fired for pri-
vate behaviors. ... The old liberal wouldn’t
have allowed that for one second. He had
conviction, and the America he inhabit-
ed appeared to reinforce it. But no longer.
Liberalism is in crisis, and so are liber-
als, and it’s going to take a profound
adjustment for them to come out of it. It’s
going to take a lot of courage, too, a virtue
in short supply.

Tax Increase Makes No Sense

Anyone who believes
the “rich” and large
corporations will pay for
$28 trillion in debt or the
$2 trillion in new deficit has
a real problem with math.
Biden’s announcement of a massive tax
increase on businesses and the wealthier
segments of the population simply makes
no sense. The tax hikes will have a signifi-
cant impact on economic growth, invest-
ment, and job creation and don’t even
scratch the surface of the structural deficit.
Even if we believe the gross domestic
product (GDP) growth and revenue esti-
mates announced by the Biden adminis-
tration, the impact on debt and deficit is
negligible.
So what’s their response? That debt and
deficits don’t matter because the key now
is to spur growth, and the cost of borrow-
ing is low despite rising debt. Further-
more, the Biden administration has been
inundated by Modern Monetary Theory
(MMT) proponents who passionately
believe that deficits are good because
they attend to the rising global demand
for U.S. dollars. Additionally, the Biden
administration argues that the deficit
increase isn’t a problem because the
Federal Reserve continues to purchase
government bonds, keeping yields low
and debt costs stable.
Nice, so why the tax hikes, then? If debt
and deficits don’t matter and growth and
jobs are what we need to focus on, then
why increase taxes?
The entire tax-increase argument
crumbles. There’s absolutely no rationale
for such massive hikes, either from the
revenue perspective or the growth objec-
tive. If growth will take care of the rising
deficit, the Biden administration should
use all the tools to support growth.
There are three main reasons why the
tax increases make no sense:
First, the estimated real revenue impact
is negligible. In 2018, the federal capital
gains tax revenue was $158.4 billion. A
5-percentage-point increase in the cur-
rent regime would provide an additional
$18 billion to $30 billion, according to
Princeton University estimates, in an
optimistic scenario where there would be
no negative impact of the tax increase.

rate and personal tax increase assume
$695 billion from corporate taxes, $495
billion from global minimum tax, and

on the economy and a GDP growth that
won’t be affected at all. Even if we accept
the estimates, these revenues are spread
over 15 years, so the net-present-value
impact is even worse.
These don’t even start to address the rise
in mandatory spending that drives the
structural deficit above 2.5 percent of GDP.
Second, the impact on the economy will
be larger than the Biden administration
estimates. These tax increases don’t affect
only “the rich.” Such high capital gains
taxes stifle innovation and reduce capital
flow into private equity, which is essential
to boost start-ups and new high-produc-
tivity businesses. This is the reason why
Europe has reduced capital gains taxes or
even eliminated them. Belgium, Luxem-
bourg, and Switzerland don’t have capital
gains tax. Of the countries that do levy
a capital gains tax, Greece and Hungary
have the lowest rates, at 15 percent. Euro-
pean countries’ average is 19.3 percent.
The same happens with the corporate
It’s impossible to tax rate. The United States would have

The risk of outflow of capital from the
United States to other countries with
more competitive taxation is evident
to anyone who has run a business or
a financial firm. These tax increases
may have little impact on multina-
tional corporations, but they do have an
exceptionally large negative effect on
medium-sized businesses. That’s why
these measures are regressive.
Even Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen
knows this tax increase is damaging. That’s
why she wants a global tax. If she saw no
negative impact, she would let other coun-
tries manage their taxes as they wish.
Third, the problem of mandatory spend-
ing isn’t even addressed. Mandatory
spending in the United States has bal-
looned to $2.9 trillion in 2020 from $1.8
trillion in 2008 and is estimated to rise
another trillion in the next 10 years. The
main cause of the U.S. deficit comes from
the rise in mandatory spending as receipts
can’t match the unstoppable increase in
spending that no government can touch.
Economies grow and enter recessions.
It’s impossible to cut the deficit via tax
increases when the pace of growth of the
expense side exceeds the economic output
and receipts even in growth periods.
No serious economist can believe that
tax increases will generate sustained
annual revenues in any economic cycle,
be it growth, stagnation, or recession to
cover more than $200 billion every year in
spending increases over a trillion deficit.
So why does Biden do it? To please the
most socialist part of his administration
and voter base, who don’t worry about
the economic implications, they only
want to make the rich poorer.
If making money in capital markets is
so easy, why don’t the politicians facilitate
things to allow everyone to do it? Fur-
thermore, if they believe making money
in capital markets or in a business is so
easy, why don’t they do it themselves?
Biden’s tax increase plan doesn’t make
sense from a growth, revenue, or deficit
perspective. Furthermore, it doesn’t make
sense from a Republican or Democrat
perspective. It simply doesn’t add up and
doesn’t address the United States’ prob-
lem: ballooning mandatory spending.

Unions Sell Out Their Own Workers for Biden Energy Plan

Joe Biden union just told
its rank-and-file mem-
bers: Sorry, guys, you’re
all fired.
Last week, the United Mine Workers of
America union endorsed Biden’s energy
policies. Yes, you read that right. The
coal-mining union bosses have em-
braced a bill that outlaws coal mining.
This is about as dumb as the Pipefitters
Union endorsing Biden for president. He
repaid them with his first act as presi-
dent—killing the Keystone XL pipeline.
So now, we have the Pipefitters Union
against pipelines and the coal miners
union against coal.
Did anyone bother to actually ask the
rank-and-file members what they thought?
Can they get their union dues back?
They should. The livelihoods of more
than 50,000 coal miners just got sold
down the river by their own union bosses.
And for what? So these miners can be
given Biden welfare checks, or so mining
jobs, which typically pay $75,000 a year,
can be replaced with solar panel installa-
tion? Ask any miner about that trade, as I
have, and they will laugh in your face.

President Benedict Arnold—actually, his
name is Cecil Roberts—conceded that
his union members “may lose a few more
jobs here,” but he defended his capitula-
tion to the Biden anti-coal radicals by
saying: “We’re trying to, first of all, insert

ourselves to the extent that we can in
this conversation because our people, a
lot of coal miners in this country, their
families have suffered already some
traumatic losses.”
So his solution is to make the trauma
a whole lot worse, thanks to his Neville
Chamberlain-style appeasement to the
green energy fanatics of his industry.
For every coal plant the U.S.
shuts down, the rest of the world
builds at least 10 new ones. Gee,
that’ll stop global warming.
Cecil, why not instead DEFEND your
industry? It’s not a heavy lift.
America was built on coal. We are the
king of coal. We have 500 years’ worth of
this energy resource, in states from West
Virginia to Wyoming. We have the clean-
est coal in the world, and it’s STILL one
of the cheapest and most reliable forms
of power production. We still get about
twice as much energy from coal as from
wind and solar. And even if we were to
move toward “renewables,” as the Texas
power outages this winter should have
taught us, coal is essential as a backup
power source when wind turbines don’t
turn and solar panels freeze over.
Don’t for a minute believe that shut-
ting down U.S. coal production will save
the planet from warming. Nikkei Asia
reports that China has “an addiction to
coal,” and its use of coal is rapidly rising,
not falling.
The Chinese are expected to build hun-
dreds of new coal-fired power stations
over the next decade. India, Vietnam,
Indonesia, and other Asian nations, with
a combined population that is at least
five times that of the United States, are
also banking on coal as a major source
of cheap power for decades to come. For
every coal plant the U.S. shuts, the rest
of the world builds at least 10 new ones.
Gee, that’ll stop global warming.
There is something wretched about
rich, college-educated “humanitarians”
pontificating about the sacrifices that
must be made to stop global warming,
but then they come up with plans that
make other people—often who make
far less money than they do—suffer all
the pain. If climate change meant every
college professor, media personality,
and million-dollar donor to the Envi-
ronmental Defense Fund had to lose
their livelihoods, I doubt they would be
so supportive of this green economic
“transformation.”
The victims of the new energy poli-
cies in Washington are the blue-collar
workers whose job losses will continue to
stack up. And the worst betrayal of all is
that the unions are in on it.

M
y first bite of Basque cheese-
cake was a revelation. I’ve
never been a fan of super-
rich New York-style cheese-
cake, so it was as if Basque cheesecake—
which is decidedly less sweet and really
lets the flavor of the cheese shine—was
made for me. I was initially drawn in by
its dark, almost-burnt appearance, but it
was the caramelized flavor and impossi-
bly smooth texture that had me begging
the chef for his recipe.
As it turns out, not only is Basque
cheesecake (or burnt Basque cheese-
cake) incredibly delicious, but it’s also
simple to make at home. Here’s every-
thing you need to know about this stun-
ning Spanish sweet.

The History of Basque Cheesecake

When I moved to Boise, Idaho, I was
excited to learn that the city has the larg-
est concentration of Basque residents
in the United States. Reportedly, many
Basque families moved from the region
in northern Spain to Idaho in the 1800s
to mine silver or work as sheepherders.
Today, Boise has a rich Basque culture
and an entire Basque block filled with
restaurants, a market, and a cultural mu-
seum. This is where I had my first Basque
cheesecake.
As I learned from talking with local
Basque chef Asier Garcia, chef-owner of
Leku Ona, that Basque cheesecake is a
relatively new concept.

At the Dane County Farmers Market
around the state Capitol in Madison, Wis-
consin, you can find a lot of local cheese,
as you can imagine. One of them is a bit
of a delicious spectacle: Brunkow Cheese
draws a crowd around a large vendor tent,
where folks line up, toothpicks in hand,
to skewer samples of an unusual Finnish
variety of cheese: juustoleipa (pronounced
YOO-sto-LAY-pah).
This firm, half-inch-thick slab has brown
spots on it from baking. The vendors cut up
their “Brun-Uusto” and its flavored variet-
ies for samples, dump the cubes on a large
griddle to fry, and move them to sample
trays when they’ve browned enough. Cue
the cheese-stabbing masses.
Slightly dense and mild in flavor, juus-
toleipä squeaks in your teeth like a fresh
cheese curd when cool, but fries up to a
golden-brown color without melting into a
puddle. The frying caramelizes the exterior
a bit more, and makes the cheese softer,
with some added creaminess.
Years ago when I first tried it, I reported
the experience to my grandmother, a child
of Finnish immigrants who once lived
on a farm in northern Wisconsin. “Have
you ever heard of this Finnish cheese? I
just had some!” I told her, and she waved
it off, unimpressed. “My mother used to
make that all the time in the oven.” Wait,

In 2017 on a trip to meet my Finnish cousins,
I ate the cheese with family. In stores I saw it
labeled leipajuusto (bread cheese), so I asked
my cousin Irene about the discrepancy.
“Juusto as such means cheese, and leipa
means bread. The two ways to name it are
as controversial as ever. Leipajuusto is more
of a national name, but we in Southern
Kuusamo and Kainuu call it juustoleipa,”
she told me. “There are as many experts as
there are Finns, I expect. We think we are
right, of course, because it is like a bread
made of cheese so that makes it juustoleipa.”
Fortunately, that’s also how we have it in
Wisconsin, so no conflicts there.
Irene cut a small wheel of it into cubes,
and I was prepared to pop the room tem-
perature cheese into my mouth and enjoy
the squeak. But to my surprise, she poured
out cups of hot coffee for everyone and
dropped a few cubes into each, warming
the cheese and giving the coffee a very
slight buttery quality. The rest we ate with
cloudberry jam on it.

My farmer friend calls them Chinese chives.
She’s from China, so she would know. She
sells them in painfully cheap bunches that
I collect like firewood each week and stack
in the fridge next to the eggs.
Nancy’s Chinese chives are bigger than
any chives I’ve known. About 14 inches long,
they get wider and whiter toward the roots
like young onions. I use them like scallions,
and they perform like stallions, filling my
food with a sweet, green, pungent flavor that
seems to encompass everything good about
onions, garlic, leeks, ramps, shallots, and all
the other members of genus Allium, which
is the Latin word for garlic.
The most common chive, Allium schoeno-
prasum, has the distinction of being the only
Allium native to both New and Old World
countries in the Eastern and Western hemi-
spheres, and is an important source of nectar
for pollinators on many continents.
Nancy’s Chinese chives, meanwhile, are

Wonton noodle soup, a favorite Chinese
comfort food, brings together a whole lot
of goodness in a single bowl: a clear, sa-
vory broth; thin, springy egg noodles; fresh,
crunchy greens; and of course, meaty,
silky-skinned wontons.
Start with the broth, made by simmer-
ing pork bones with aromatics for a couple
of hours. Be sure to blanch and rinse the
bones first, which will help rid them of im-
purities and give you a clearer soup.
In the meantime, assemble your wont-
ons. Fillings can vary, but this recipe uses
a savory mix of ground pork, shrimp,
and shiitake mushrooms. Don’t overstuff
them—wontons have less filling than

Place the pork bones in a large pot of water and bring to
a boil over high heat. Boil for 5 minutes, then drain and
rinse the pork bones.
To the same pot, add the onion, ginger, cinnamon stick,
bay leaves, and 3 quarts water. Cover and bring to a boil
over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for
2 hours.
Remove and discard the bones, herbs, and spices.
(Note: If the bones have a good amount of meat on
them, reserve the meat for another use—it’s delicious
simply dipped in a mix of soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil,
and chopped scallions.) Use a skimmer to remove any

“Burnt cheesecake isn’t something our
grandmothers made for us,” he said. “It
came out of a restaurant called La Vina in
San Sebastian in the 1990s, with almost
every chef, home baker, and magazine riff-
ing on the recipe created by chef Santiago
Rivera.” The story goes that Rivera had
taken over the family restaurant and set
out to add a simple dessert to the menu.
Working within the constraints of a savory
kitchen, including a hot oven that contrib-
uted to the cheesecake’s dark color, this riff
on classic cheesecake was born.
The Taste
Basque cheesecake bakes at a higher
temperature than traditional cheesecake
(400 degrees F versus 350 degrees F),
giving it its deep golden hue and cara-
melized flavor. The burnt moniker comes
only from the appearance—Basque
cheesecake tastes rich and caramelly.
The other thing you’ll notice is that
Basque cheesecake doesn’t have a crust.
The airy batter and high heat cause the
cheesecake to rise and fall in the oven a
bit like a souffle, which gives the dessert
a crust-like exterior and ultra-creamy
interior. Depending on the bake time,
the center can range from runny (think
Camembert cheese) to fudge-like. A
small amount of flour in the batter (just
1/4 cup for nearly three pounds of dairy)
helps set the cheesecake and makes it
sturdy enough to slice.
Basque cheesecake is also less sweet
than most cheesecakes, which really lets
the cheese flavor shine.
“In Spain, Philadelphia cream cheese
wasn’t widely available, so the original
Basque cheesecakes were made without
salt, because the Spanish cream cheese
was already seasoned,” Garcia told me
with a bit of a laugh.
Do I Need a Special Pan?
Basque cheesecakes are most often
baked in springform pans, but unlike
New York-style cheesecakes, you don’t
need a water bath. Because of this, you
can use a cake pan instead. Just be sure
to use one that’s at least 3 inches deep,
because the cheesecake will rise (and
fall) quite a bit as it bakes.

3 Tips for the Best Basque Cheesecake
Rivera’s recipe is widely available in
books and online—Taste called it “a
special recipe but not a secret one.” Hav-
ing cooked through a handful of adap-
tations, I’ve found a few tips for Basque
cheesecake perfection.
1. Bring the cream cheese to room
temperature. Cubing the cream cheese
and letting it sit at room temperature for
at least an hour will make mixing the
batter much easier and ensure a creamy
cheesecake.
2. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing
well after each addition. Adding the eggs
one at a time and making sure each one
is fully incorporated before adding the
next brings a lot of air to the batter, which
is what helps create that souffle-like
texture.
3. Pull the cheesecake from the oven
when it’s jiggly. For a smooth, creamy
interior, you don’t want to overbake the
cheesecake. Pull it out when it’s deeply
browned on top but still jiggles when

‘BURNT’ BASQUE CHEESECAKE
SERVES 8 TO 10
2 pounds full-fat cream cheese
Cooking spray
1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
5 large eggs
2 cups heavy cream
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
Bring the cream cheese to room tem-
perature: Cut into large cubes. Place in a
large bowl if using an electric hand mixer
or in the bowl of a stand mixer and let sit
at room temperature at least 1 hour.
Heat the oven and prepare the pan:
Arrange a rack in the middle of the oven
and heat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Coat a 9-inch springform pan or 9-inch
(3-inch high) round cake pan with cook-
ing spray. Line the pan with 2 overlap-
ping sheets of parchment paper, and
don’t worry if there are some wrinkles
and creases in the paper.

a fine-mesh strainer to sift all-purpose
flour onto the batter. Fold it in with a
large spatula.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
Bake until browned and almost burned-
looking on top, with a jiggly center, 50
minutes to 1 hour. The cake will puff,
crack, and fall as it bakes.
Remove the cheesecake from the oven
and let cool completely on a wire rack,
about 1 hour.
To serve, remove the cake from the pan,
or remove the outer ring of the spring-
form pan. Peel away the parchment
paper and slice the cheesecake.

a boil over high heat. Adjust heat to maintain simmer
and cook until the level of liquid is just below the top
layer of chickpeas, about 10 minutes.
While chickpeas cook, heat 1/4 cup oil in a 10-inch
nonstick or carbon-steel skillet over medium heat until
just shimmering. Add bread crumbs and cook, stirring
frequently, until deep golden brown, 3 to 4 minutes.

A Seafood Dinner in the Greek Islands

There is a category of recipes that
I make that I lovingly refer to as
“dream dishes.” Dream dishes, to
me, are ones that transport us to
another time or place. When we’re
really lucky, the mere smell of a
certain dish can take our senses on
a trip to a dream destination. When
I make rice-stuffed calamari, I can’t
help but feel like I’m in the Greek
islands.
Baby squid are
surprisingly simple
to prepare, because
their small size and
more delicate texture
help them cook up in
just minutes, without
becoming rubbery.
Something about the aroma of the
fresh dill and parsley wafting in the
air, combined with the feeling of the
olive oil and rice between my fingers
as I stuff fresh baby squid, makes
me feel as if I’m in sunny Santorini
or the fabled Ikaria—the Blue Zone
island whose healthy citizens seem
to “forget to die.” Taking a bite of the
finished dish, bright with the flavors
of the citrusy herbs and fruity olive
oil, I’m immediately transported to
the breezy family gatherings of my
childhood.
The second reason I consider
dishes like this a “dream” to prepare
is that they are easy, quick, and fun,
but yield impressive results. This
recipe can be made in under 25
minutes if you’re totally engaged—I
know because I’ve done it on TV
several times!
Notes on Squid
When many English-speakers
think of squid, we often picture the
fried form that is available in many
restaurants, and refer to it with the
Italian word calamari. The etymol-
ogy of the word actually comes from
the ancient Greek Kalamos, for pen,
which the little tubes do resemble,
especially with their tentacles at-
tached. When whole, they look like
the quills that people used to write
with. Eventually the word fused
with the modern Italian calamari,
and now Greeks use the same word
spelled with a “k.”
The Mediterranean diet recom-
mends eating seafood two to three
times per week. Squid adds flavor
and variety to many pescatarian
diets: In addition to frying, many
cultures around the Mediterranean
roast, braise, and stew squid. It’s
also served in famous pasta, risotto,
paella, and soup preparations.
Squid is a great seafood choice
because of its high vitamin and min-
eral content. It’s very high in copper,
a trace mineral that helps the body
with nutrient absorption; and vita-
min B2, which helps with pain relief,
such as for migraine symptoms.
It’s also a great source of complete

in tomatoes and vinegar; remove from heat.
Stir bread mixture and spinach into chickpeas. Con-
tinue to simmer, stirring occasionally, until the mixture
is thick and stew-like, 5 to 10 minutes longer. Off heat,
stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons oil. Cover and let
stand for 5 minutes. Season with salt and extra vin-
egar to taste. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve
with remaining bread.
NOTES:
For a vegan version, substitute vegetable broth or
water for the chicken broth.
If using chickpeas that you’ve cooked from dried, use
3 1/3 cups of cooked chickpeas and 2/3 cup of the
cooking liquid.
Use a fruity, spicy, high-quality olive oil here.
Red wine vinegar can be substituted for sherry vinegar.

It’s important to distinguish

A Simple Stuffing
In this dish, baby squid are stuffed
with a simple but winning combi-
nation of rice, onion, spinach, and
fresh herbs. The filling works just
as well for stuffing vegetables and
grape leaves.
Alongside seafood, dill, parsley,
onion, and olive oil are among the
most commonly found ingredi-
ents in Greek island kitchens. Each
of them have been present in the
region since antiquity, and spread
throughout the Mediterranean
region when Greek explorers set up
colonies in Southern Italy, France,
and into the Eastern Levantine
regions.
Spinach is one of the most nutri-
ent-dense vegetables around, so I
love sneaking in into recipes when-
ever possible. In addition to high
amounts of iron, spinach also con-
tains a lot of water, so it helps us stay
hydrated in warmer weather. Eating
spinach also helps to curb our ap-
petites and make us feel fuller, and
its high calcium, manganese, and
vitamin K content are important for
healthy bones and keeping osteopo-
rosis at bay.

say zinfandel is a dark red
wine that’s bold, brash, thickly
rich, soft, and sweet-ish; that
has slightly Port-y aromas and
high alcohol content; and that should be
sipped immediately after release by itself.
Food is optional.
Older people (over age 60?) tell you zinfan-
del ought to be a medium-weight red wine
that’s balanced to go with food and is even
better after a couple of years in the bottle.
Many younger zin lovers crave bigger
wines. Older former zin drinkers are dis-
gusted with what it’s become.
(It’s that crowd between 45 and 60 that I
can’t figure out!)
As wine drinkers become wine lovers,
they can take one of two paths while tra-
versing the Zinfandel Highway. One path
leads to Port, sweet and high in alcohol.
The other leads to claret, which is what zin
used to be.
Claret, an older term, refers to red wines
that are similar to the way cabernet sauvi-
and dry enough to warrant putting it with
food. That style is hard to find today.
The passion that some zinfandel lovers
display now is hard to comprehend. I’m old
enough to recall the amazing versatility
of this grape. Its greatest appeal was that
it made lots of different kinds of wines, all
interesting.
Many younger zin
lovers crave bigger wines.
Older former zin drinkers
are disgusted with what
it’s become.
It made a delightful dry, nearly pink wine
(“white zin”); a sparkling wine; and, best
of all, a light red that had all the charm of
Beaujolais, with berry flavors and the crisp-
ness to work as a foil to pizza.
It was Chianti with more fruit.
minimania over this grape (though it’s
waning) still has obsessive devotees seek-
ing bigger, richer, more intensely flavored
zins than ever before.
It has been 40 years since we first be-
gan to see this new style of zin-
fandel replace the older, more
restrained style.
In his superb 1988 “Notes on
a California Cellarbook” (now
sadly out of print), Napa Valley
author Bob Thompson said of zin:
“A school of drinkers wants its Zinfandel
inky dark, astringent enough to tan hides,
and freighted with 14 percent or 15 per-
cent alcohol, the sort of wine sometimes
labeled Late Harvest. Nothing, the anoint-
eds say, digs in and battles hot sauces and
gamey meats on such even terms. Maybe
the claim is true for linebackers and their
spiritual kin, but I have fallen asleep too
many times in my bear-knuckle stew to
take pleasure from such stuff.”
Thompson was right: Too much intensity
makes clumsy wines.
And that’s precisely what consumers
and too much alcohol, some have begun
to turn their backs on today’s biggest zins.
The zin exodus is a reaction to zins of the
1990s, when Thompson’s derision of 14
percent to 15 percent alcohol wasn’t
enough for some people. It had
to be a lot more than that! So
17 percent became the new 15
percent—massive brutes with
astringency from starboard to
port and the strength to remove rust
p
from a 1949 Ford trailer hitch.
Worst of all, many sell for $50 or more,
mainly to those who prefer wine that’s akin
to 10W-40 motor oil.
In the hands of skilled winemakers, zin-
fandel still makes a lighter-styled red, gen-
erally from slightly cooler climates.
To find milder zins, find the alcohol listed
on the label. There are many at 14.5 percent.
