Texas House Passes

Bill to Prohibit Using
‘Meat’ to Describe
Plant-Based Food
LI HAI

The Texas House of Representatives ap-

proved legislation on May 11 that would
prohibit companies that produce imita-
tion meat from using the terms “meat” or
“beef” on food labels.
The bill, HB 316, states that “beef” and
“pork” are edible portions from cattle and
swine carcasses and that “meat,” “beef,”
“pork,” and “poultry” cannot be used
to label or advertise food products that
are cell-cultured, plant-based, or insect-
based. If they are, the Department of State
Health Services will consider the products
“misbranded.”
The measure, which was approved by
124–21 vote, now heads to the state Senate.
“This is for those who choose to eat meat,
but it’s also for those who choose to not eat
meat,” said Republican state Rep. Brad
Buckley, according to the Austin Amer-
ican-Statesman.

In the state of Indiana, for example,
nearly 1.3 million claims have been
processed for unemployment, and
roughly 15 percent of these claims
“have been flagged for fraud indica-

Claims for unemployment bene-

lockdowns began. Most states have
been struggling to keep up with
a record volume of claims due to
their outdated systems. In addition,
they’re not equipped to deal with
large fraud attacks, particularly the
ones coming from overseas.
States have to put new technolo-

so they can stop the fraud before it
happens, rather than try to chase it
down and claw it back.

The Italian tradition gives us another

Some wise sayings turn up in varying
forms. The late Leon Adams is reported
to have said, “All wine would be red if it
could,” which is a variation of “If it’s not
red, it’s not wine,” or “White wine is what
you drink until they open the red.”
In the book “Thinking About Wine,”
authors John Frederick Walker and Elin
McCoy quote Piero Antinori of Italy as
saying, “Red wine is wine; white wine is
just white wine.”
Hugh Johnson once asked former Acacia
