The fundamental theme of "In Flanders Field" is hope. The poem reaffirms the wants of
those who have died in the ephemeral world, but whose spirits are still bound to their
homelands. The graves of those who died during the conflict are marked with flowers and
unending rows of crosses.

The poet, in a highly creative way, seeks to elicit empathy from his audience for the slain
soldiers by stating that they were all alive once and now rest quietly in Flanders Fields. And
over the ground, the larks are soaring and singing. The poet, enthralled by optimism, urges
the living to take up the baton and continue the fight against adversaries.
