INTRODUCTION PURPOSE The overall purpose of this project includes the establishment of a new data centre infrastructure, including disaster recovery replication. Also included is the integration of the existing corporate network and customer access infrastructure into a single environment with integration into the global, MTN.net network for MTN Swaziland. SCOPE PROJECT GOAL The establishment of a new data centre infrastructure, including disaster recovery replication between the Matsapha and MTN Office Park facilities Provide for scalability within the data centres and the MTN campus Integration of the existing corporate network and customer access infrastructure into a single environment with integration into the global, MTN.net network for MTN Swaziland in order to commence the use of shared services, etc.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES Allow for a network platform that is scalable, efficient, redundant and reliable in order to deliver new services and increase capacity easily The efficient delivery of new generation and value-added services (e.g. Blackberry, Mobile Money, content services, etc...) Facilitate the smoother transition of changes to the network and its management, e.g.: Network group services being managed by the IS department, in the future The movement toward convergence that includes the migration of voice and data networks into a single network The efficient use of transmission Cleanup of the data centres in order to improve operational efficiencies (e.g. structuring of the cabling system, etc.) Structuring the data centres and network infrastructures Streamline the management of the data centres Increase virtualization capabilities within the data centres Improve network security

PROJECT BENEFITS This design proposal will include the following benefits: Data synchronization Data centre, disaster recovery Improved performance of mission critical and user systems Provide long term investment protection Allow for high levels of network flexibility, scalability and performance in order for MTN Swaziland to meet their business requirements and reduce operating costs Higher transmission capacity between the data centres and their nearest switch facilities The deployment of services (e.g. IMI, SRS, Blackberry, Mobile Money...) at any site, not only within the SPTC facility Existing equipment can be distributed from the overcrowded switch facilities to other, less crowded sites The future creation of additional VLANs and firewall installations to cater for non-permanent staff members who log onto the network

PROJECT OVERVIEW CURRENT SCENARIO The existing infrastructure includes four, separate networks, namely: Corporate WAN (not MPLS enabled) Global network (MTN.net) Broadband access network (A single VHG (PE) router that terminates broadband sessions directly into logical VRFs) MPBN network

Below is a diagram of the current data centre architecture.

PROPOSED SOLUTION In order to meet the more demanding business requirements, the proposal below puts forward a plan to integrate existing IP network infrastructure (with the exception of the MPBN) into a single, integrated MPLS infrastructure whereby the changes to the core network are done without any disruptions to the network edge. This proposal is seen as the first critical step in the roadmap to gear up for the long term infrastructure in order to provide the business requirements whilst also providing the best possible, investment protection. With regards to the establishment of a new Data Centre, Disaster Recovery (DR) infrastructure and the linking of the two Data Centres in Mbabane and Matsapha, the following is proposed: Short Term Transmission Solution:

The installation of two Juniper, MX960 routers in the Matsapha and MTN Office Park data centres, respectively The Juniper MX960 router is a high-density Layer 2 and Layer 3 Ethernet platform for several service provider Ethernet edge scenarios. The MX960 provides a range of Ethernet services, including VPLS services for multi-point connectivity. The MX960 is 14-slot router with 480 Gbit/s throughput in performance. A 40-port Gigabit Ethernet dense port card (DPC) and a four-port 10G Ethernet DPC were the initial line card modules, with Trio-based 16x10GE linecards reaching the full-duplex 120 Gbps capacity The MX Series is a family of high-performance Ethernet Services Routers with powerful switching features and are designed for high-performance service providers and enterprises. The MX Series has advanced MPLS, Multicast, Quality of Service, low latency and security capabilities. It provides flexibility and reliability to support advanced applications and services, including high-speed transport andVPN services, next-generation broadband multiplay services and high-volume Internet data center internetworking

FUTURE RECOMMENDATIO NS The recommendations below are not part of the scope of this project although they will be identified and highlighted here. FIBRE RETICULATION A long term strategy for fibre reticulation should include the installation of yellow fibre trays that reside on top of the racks in the data centres and switch facilities that includes express exit points. The standardization should be on LC single mode fibre that can be used for anything and everything and spares should be kept. This configuration will improve provisioning time frames. RACKING AND CABLING Data centres should include the implementation of uniform rows of racks with standard cabling and fibre reticulation where a switch is installed at the top of each rack. This configuration will make it easier to: Install servers and to get associated services running, quickly and efficiently Manage the data centres more efficiently Enable quicker turnaround times in troubleshooting problems Ensure a flexible environment within which to work and expand

TRANSMISSION CAPACITY The use of combined transmission is proposed instead of the current scenario where transmission capacities are dedicated per service deployed. This will allow for the flexible use of capacity over any time periods.
