1. Long haul equipment familiarization


a) BU

The BU is the branching unit. It has 4 ports and can hold 4


RFUs (ODUs). Each port supports 1 transmission channel
indicated above the port on the BU.
There are 2 types of BUs. BU that supports channels 1 to 4,
and BU that supports channels 5 to 9.
The BU has 2 interfaces for waveguide connections. “Main
Antenna” interface that should be connected to the
antenna interface through a flexible waveguide in case the
BU is Main. “Main Cascade” interface that should be
connected to the “Main Antenna” interface on a cascade
BU.

b) RFU

The RFU is the Radio Frequency Unit. It is similar to the ODU in functionality.

The RFU has 3 interfaces. 1 TX, 1 RX, and 1 RX_SD in case of SD.

There 2 types of RFUs: RFU high and RFU low.

c) Indoor Unit (RTN 980L)

The RTN 980L is similar to the RTN 980 in


chassis structure.

d) Andrew dual polarized antenna

The Andrew dual polarized antenna is like any other Andrew antenna.

2. Site Preparation
a) Check if there is suitable space for the antenna to be installed at the
required level with clear LOS and without affecting other existing
antennas.
b) Check if there is suitable space to install the BUs above the antenna.
c) Check if there is enough space on the rack to install the new RTN 980L
(5U).

d) Check if there are available DCDU ports for the new RTN 980L.
e) Check if there is a suitable route for the IF cables to be installed from the
BUs to the RTN 980L.
f) Verify that all the RFUs are high if the site is the high site and Low if the
site is the low site.

3. Outdoor Installation
a) Antenna installation
a. Assemble the antenna components
b. Install the antenna in its specified location on the tower

b) RFUs installation
a. Verify that the RFU is low if on low site and high if on high site.
(Check RFU nameplate label)

b. Remove the sticker from the BU ports and install an RFU on every
port that corresponds to a used frequency channel.
c. Install a matching load on the ports that correspond to the
unused channels.

c) BU installation
a. Attach a label on every BU indicating the following parameters:
i. Main or Cascade
ii. Low site or High site
iii. Frequency band
iv. Polarization (V or H)
b. Install the BUs on the tower in any location above the antenna
taking into consideration the length of the soft waveguides
provided and that the BUs should be installed with the antenna
and cascade interfaces at the bottom (facing downwards).
c. The elevation angle between the 2 BUs should be between 135
and 180 degrees.

d. If the site is a low site, the BU that supports channels 1 to 4 is the


main BU and should be connected to the antenna interface
through its Main Antenna interface. The other BU that supports
channels 5 to 9 is the cascade BU and should be connected
through its Main Antenna interface to the Main Cascade interface
of the main BU.
e. If the site is a high site, the BU that supports channels 5 to 9 is the
main BU and should be connected to the antenna interface
thought its Main Antenna interface. The other BU that supports
channels 1 to 4 is the cascade BU and should be connected
through its Main Antenna interface to the Main Cascade interface
on the main BU.
f. Take into consideration the antenna interface polarization and the
corresponding BU.
g. Ground the BU and every RFU to the tower or to a ground bar.

d) IF cables installation
a. Install 1 IF cable for every RFU from the RFU to the IF board in the
IDU.
b. Label both ends of the IF cable specifying the following
parameters.
i. Port number
ii. Main or Cascade
iii. V or H
c. Terminate the IF cables from both ends and install weather
proofing on outdoor connections.

4. Indoor Installation
a. Install the RTN980L in the 19” rack in a way similar to any RTN980.

b. Install the IF boards in the RTN980L starting from top to bottom.


i. For example, a link that requires 8 IF boards should occupy
slots 14,13,12,11,10,9,8,7 where slots 7 and 8 correspond to
channel 1, slots 9 and 10 to channel 2, slots 11 and 12 to
channel 3, and slots 13 and 14 to channel 4.

c. Connect the terminated IF cables to the IF boards according to labels.

5. Configuration
a. Connect to the RTN 980L on site through Web LCT in the same way
that you connect to any RTN 900 series.
b. In slot layout, add the IF boards in the required slots and add the
corresponding RFU for every IF board.
c. In link configuration, create the required XPIC groups
d. Configure the XPIC group by specifying the following parameters
according to the provided link design.
i. IF channel bandwidth
ii. V-polarization board and H-polarization board
iii. Maximum transmit power and transmit power in dbm
iv. Transmit frequency in MHz
v. Rx frequency in MHz
e. Configure the manual modulation mode for all the created XPIC
groups

6. Alignment and XPD


a. Check if interference exists on all the transmission channels from
both sides.
b. Turn off all the transmission channels and turn on only 1 channel to
begin the alignment process.
c. Make sure that the same transmission channel is turned on on both
sides. (usually V of channel 1)
d. Use the provided RSSI cable to connect the voltmeter to the RSSI port
on the active RFU.
e. Align the antennas from both sides and monitor the alignment to
reach the target RSL.
f. After achieving the target RSL, fix the antennas and struts firmly.
g. Calibrate the XPD level by rotating the inner interface between the
antenna and the waveguides.
h. Monitor the XPD levels for all transmission channels to achieve the
required level (Between 28 and 34).

7. Commissioning
a. Turn on all transmission channels
b. Configure an EPLA group for the transmission channels on both NEs
c. Check the alarms on both NEs and verify no major alarms exist
d. Enable port flow monitoring on all IF boards on both NEs
e. Label all the IF boards according to their corresponding link and
channel polarization and number
8. Testing
a. Test the stability of the RSL on both sides for at least 2 transmission
channels.
i. Log in to the NE using web lct or U2000 and select the
corresponding RFU
ii. In configuration select the performance graph analyze
iii. Select the start time and end time and then draw
iv. The test result is considered a “pass” if the RSl level is varying
within a maximum 2 dbm under normal conditions.

b. Test the stability of the TSL on both sides for at least 2 transmission
channels.
i. Log in to the NE using web lct or U2000 and select the
corresponding RFU
ii. In configuration select the performance graph analyze
iii. Select Transmit in the power parameter
iv. Select the start time and end time and then draw
v. The test result is considered a “Pass” if the TSL level is
constant.

c. Test the SNR for at least 2 transmission channels.


i. Log in to the NE using web lct or U2000 and select the
corresponding IF board
ii. In configuration select the performance graph analyze
iii. Select SNR in Performance type
iv. Select the start time and end time and then draw
v. Test is considered a “pass” if SNR is larger than 38. Nominal
value for SNR is between 40 and 42.

d. Perform a PRBS test on all transmission channels to test the BER.


i. On side A, select the IF board for channel X, and in
configuration select the PRBS test. Do the same on side B.
ii. Set the following test parameters on both sides.
1. Direction: Radio
2. Test period: 1s
3. Test times: 60
iii. Start the test from both sides at the same time
iv. Analyze the test result chart
v. The test is considered a “pass” if the result is normal (green)
for 100%.
vi. Note that invalid (yellow) result will appear in the chart
because of the tests done in the period between starting test
on side A and starting test on side B. These results are
considered normal.
vii. Analyze the “Test Report” to verify that no bit errors are
found.

9. Important Remarks
a. Perform all installations taking into consideration Huawei safety
standards.
b. Weatherproof all outdoor connections firmly.
c. Double check all grounding connections to be installed according to
standards.
d. Make sure all unused ports are covered properly. Matching loads
should be installed on all unused ports on the BU.
e. Consider that the weight of 1 BU is 40 Kg approximately and should
be raised and installed with caution.
f. Make sure that the waveguides are installed with acceptable bending
and use clamps for attachment.
g. Read the TSSR provided very well and in case of discrepancy between
the TSSR and the information provided in this guide contact the
engineer in charge.
