In short, web developers build and maintain websites.

Web developers often work for clients who are trying to get their product or service onto the web.
The work is typically very project focused and involves collaborating with a team that helps to
coordinate the client’s needs into the end product. The client could be a tech company, an
organization, or a government. The work could involve front-end, back-end, or full-stack web
development.

In web development, we have three stacks involved. Think of stack as “sub-field”. Simply saying the
term web development is further divided into three fields.

They are

1. Front-End Development

2. Back-End Development

3. Full Stack Deevelopment

Shall we look at them individually?

Front-end development involves the “client-facing” side of web development. That is to say that it
generally refers to the portion of the site, app, or digital product that users will see and interact with. A
Front-End Developer, therefore, is responsible for the way a digital product looks and “feels,” which is
why they are often also referred to as Web Designers.

FRONT-END DEVELOPMENT
Front-End Developers will usually need to possess a solid understanding of programming languages,
including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as frameworks like React, Bootstrap, Backbone,
AngularJS, and EmberJS.

Just like you came to our platform to check the Cloudde Lab, all the interfaces you have seen are on
the front-end architecture. It is the visible part of the web page —— WHAT YOU CAN SEE.

BACK-END DEVELOPMENT
If Front-End Developers are responsible for how a digital product looks, Back-End Developers are
focused on how it works. This means they’re responsible for overseeing what’s under the hood,
including database interactions, user authentication, server, network and hosting configuration, and
business logic.

The primary responsibility of Back-End Developers is to ensure the functionality of the site, including
its responsiveness and speed. To do that, Back-End Developers have to know how to build servers
with modern frameworks (while developing custom APIs and serving static websites and files), and
how to manage databases and data on a web server.

So yes, they take care of the “Non-visible” part of a web page.

FULL STACK DEVELOPMENT

A Full-Stack Developer is someone familiar with both front- and back-end development. They are
generalists, adept at wearing both hats, and familiar with every layer of development. Obviously,
employers want to hire Full-Stack Developers – according to an Indeed study, they are the fourth-
most in-demand job in tech.

If the title is contentious, it’s in the generalist nature of the position. Developers who specialize in the
front-end or back-end often bristle at the notion that someone could be equally adept at both – the
expression “jack-of-all-trades, master of none” comes to mind.

WEB DESIGN VS WEB DEVELOPMENT

A full stack developer has knowledge on both front end stacks and back end stacks.

Web design and web development are critical for companies that want to create and maintain a
positive online presence. These two roles work closely together and, in some cases, may be filled by a
single person. Web designers and web developers require programming knowledge, although at
different levels. They must also have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as they must test
design and function options to determine the best fit. Finally, web designers and web developers
must stay abreast of the latest trends, programs, and innovations in their fields. When well executed,
design and development create a cohesive tech-driven concept that ties into and furthers a
company’s vision, allowing the business to connect with more consumers, more easily.
Although they share some skills, web designers and web developers must master specific
competencies in their respective fields. Web design emphasizes aesthetics, so designers must have
greater knowledge of what makes a website visually appealing and logical to users. They need to
master design applications such as Adobe Dreamweaver, JavaScript, and scripting frameworks for
multi-feature front-end applications. Furthermore, they must make sure the products they create fit a
business’s
 brand, from logos to color schemes.

Web developers, on the other hand, build the functional aspects of the website within the aesthetic
parameters set forth by web designers. With their advanced programming skills, they ensure the
product envisioned by the web designer comes to fruition. Web developers must master more
extensive programming skills and software languages, such as Structured Query Language (SQL),
Python, Java server development, machine learning, the development of APIs for interacting with
objects, database tools and server architecture, and agile systems analysis.

In layman terms, you can be a web designer and not be a developer. But once you are a web
developer, web design attributes are intrinsic in your skill set.
