Art Appreciation - Prelims Examination

I. ANALYSIS

1) In light of the study about Arts and Humanities. Can you analyze how " The
scientist becomes a learned man and the humanist becomes a wise man?" Justify
your answer.
- Scientists became learned men as a result of their knowledge of the things they
studied. Science allows us to gain a better understanding of how and why things
work, as well as the mechanisms and causes of complex systems. Humanists study
human culture, which allows them to gain high-level insights, learn more about
humans become critical thinkers, and expand their professional skill set. Humanists
learned from their experiences.

2) What do you think are the qualities of Philippine art? In your opinion, what makes
Philippine art Filipino?
- I believe that what distinguishes Philippine art is that we can see the experience
of Filipinos in most of the masterpieces created by Filipinos.

II. ASSESTMENT

1) Why do you think this Philosophical theory of art can be an avenue for the
discussion and dissemination of these realities in our country? How can the
recipients of artworks be more involved?
- I believe that theories play an important role in the creation of arts because the
more we study our surroundings, the place we live in, human culture, and so on, the
more we are able to create masterpieces that are based on reality.

III. EXPLAIN THE FOLLOWING

1) "KNOW THYSELF" - Socrates.

- Socrates' saying simply means that in order to fully know yourself, you must
recognize your limits in terms of knowledge and understanding.

2) "WITHDRAW INTO YOURSELF TRUTH DWELLS IN THE INNER MAN" - St.Agustine.

- This saying means that we should focus on our inner self rather than our outer
self. Our outside self could mean our appearance to others that see us, and the inner
self means on what really is our appearance or attitude that is within our self that we
are trying to hide.

3) "THE SCIENTIST TENDS TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THE WORLD THAT HE

FORGETS TO KNOW HIMSELF" - Thales of Mellitus.
- Scientists became interested in and learned about almost everything in the
world, but their curiosity about their surroundings prevented them from learning
more about themselves.

4) "MADALING MAGING TAO, MAHIRAP MAGPAKATAO."

- This saying means that it is easy for us to be human because we are already a
human but it is hard for us to have a good attitude to others, especially to our
enemy. In simpler words, we tend to have a hard time to make decision that will
affect other people positively. For example when there are people that have made
grave sins to us, we tend not to forgive them.

IV. REFLECTIONT

1) Examine the philosophical theory of art you learned. What significant lesson did
you find personal?
- The theocentric viewpoint is the theory that I learned. As a Christian, I take this
personally because I believe that all the things in this world is centered to God, and
everything we do in the world is dedicated to God. All of our good deeds glorify God,
but all of our bad deeds will be judged after the end of the world.

2) In what part of the lesson did you find easy or hard to illustrate in the way that
you learned? Why?
- I find theocentric view easy, since I am familiar with the Bible and I am able to
study about this theory more often.
